Appearance
- The following discussion is preserved as an archive of a successful Online Ambassador application.
There were no significant objections, and such diverse language experience could be a real asset to the program.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 18:53, 7 March 2011 (UTC)

- Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
- I am editing in 22 languages, but en-wiki is my first (116 000 edits in all projects, but 68 000 edits - en-wiki).
- In three sentences or less, summarize your involvement with Wikimedia projects.
- I have GA-articles in three languages, FA-articles only on pl-wiki. I'v created more than 3000 articles in 22 languages.
- Please indicate a few articles to which you have made significant content contributions. (e.g. DYK, GA, FA, major revisions/expansions/copyedits).
- I'm part of 9 WikiProjects: WikiProject Bible, WikiProject Religious texts, WikiProject Biography, WikiProject Film, etc. Some articles: Codex Sinaiticus, Codex Alexandrinus, Codex Boreelianus, Vladimir N. Beneshevich, Bernard de Montfaucon.
- How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
- Adding template "welcome" on their talk-pages (maybe 20 or 30 times?); formatting articles by adding links, references...
- What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
- I saw many users on several wikis who left project because one of their articles was deleted. I saw many users who left project after receiving the first ban. It is difficult to help in these situations, but I tried several times (mailing).
- Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
- Conflicts - rarely, only with users who made uncyclopedic edition - e.g. Zapihanha, or with users who prefer the 19th century books (Schaff, Parsons, Newman) as only reliable source. Bans I have received only on pl-wiki (7 days, 7 days) and cs-wiki (5 minutes - they have different rules than other wikis). Second ban on pl-wiki was a result of edit war. The first? I did not know rules as a newcomer (it was three years ago). On en-wiki I have rarely contact with users who prefer the 19th century books.
- How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
- It is possible, but not in every week.
- What else should we know about you that is relevant to being a Wikipedia Ambassador?
- New kind of experience... I am still thinking about it.
Discussion
[edit]- Very impressive set of contributions. Maybe you could elaborate more on how regularly you could check in on students if you were a mentor. If it wouldn't work to be a reliable mentor for the full term -- a week is a long time to wait when someone is looking for help -- then perhaps you could join as a general ambassador without directly serving as a one-on-one mentor for any students.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 14:34, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
- From time to time I need a wiki-break (3, 5, or even 7 days), but not often. Between 1-8 August 2010 I did not edited. Leszek Jańczuk (talk) 15:51, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
- Cool. That's generally not a problem, then, although it would be really helpful if you could ask someone else to look after any mentees you're working with when you go on a wikibreak of longer than a few days. --Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 15:53, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
- Support, very good experience, Sadads (talk) 11:22, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
- Question. Editing in 22 languages? Seriously? I'm blown away. Can we have more detail on that -- are you able to read and write those many languages without a dictionary or other aid? Even Moe Berg only was fluent in a dozen, I believe.--Epeefleche (talk) 19:51, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
- I understand even more languages, but I do not have time for every one of them (e.g. Latin, Sahidic, Hebrew). Usually it is only the basic knowledge: pt-1, es-1, nl-1, sr-1, bg-1, ro-1, etc. Here you can see my edits in all projects. Some articles: sr:Базелски рукопис (Serbian), ro:Codex Vaticanus (Romanian), be:Сінайскі кодэкс (Belarussian), el:Κλαρομοντάνιος Κώδικας (Greek), etc. Please visit my user-pages on pl-wiki, ru-wiki, fr-wiki, de-wiki, pt-wiki, and 16 other. In fact I do mistakes in every language. Leszek Jańczuk (talk) 20:10, 3 March 2011 (UTC)
