This proposed guideline is meant to reflect consensus about the notability of religious figures as measured by their contributions.
Criteria
[edit]If a religious figure meets any one of the following conditions, as substantiated through reliable sources, they are definitely notable. If a religious figure meets none of these conditions, they may still be notable, and the merits of an article on the academic/professor will depend largely on the extent to which it is verifiable.
Because this guideline is intended to address, among others, figures whose historical existence is a matter of religious belief, some modification of standard guidelines is required.
- The figure is the founder of a notable religious movement or denomination whose notability is established by independent sources.
- The figure appears in the central scriptures of a notable religion. (Note: Even minor figures in the Bible, Qur'an, and other notable scriptures meet this guideline).
- The figure appears non-trivially in an important non-scriptural religious narrative.
- The figure made a substantial contribution to religious thought or philosophy as indicated by independent sources.
- The figure is a leader or regarded as an important figure in a notable religious denomination
