Wikipedia:Notability (Reality Television participants)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This guideline is not Wikipedia policy; however, these criteria are considered a fair test of whether a Reality Television participant merits an article at Wikipedia.

In general, the text of an article should include enough information to explain why the person is notable. Ultimately, and most importantly, all content must be verifiable using reliable sources, and, if the subject is living, we must follow the policy at our policy for biographies of living people.

Criteria for notability of Reality Television participants

[edit]

A Reality Television participant is generally notable if they meet any of the following standards. Failure to meet these criteria is not conclusive proof that a subject should not be included; conversely, meeting one or more does not guarantee that a subject should be included.

Number Criteria Example
1 The subject was the winner of the TV programme in question. Cameron Stout from Big Brother 2003 (UK)
2 The subject has appeared on two different Reality TV programmes. Alison Irwin from both Big Brother 4 (US) and The Amazing Race 5
3 The subject has appeared on two different series of the same Reality TV programme. Jade Goody from both Big Brother 2002 (UK) and Celebrity Big Brother 2007 (UK)
4 The subject has achieved a musical career before or after the Reality TV programme that passed WP:MUSIC. Ray Quinn from The X Factor (UK series 3)
5 The subject has achieved notability that passes WP:BIO Ruth Badger from The Apprentice (UK Series Two)
6 The actions of the subject were considered as extremely controversial. Omarosa Manigault-Stallworth from The Apprentice (US Season 1)
7 The subject or his/her actions received vast media coverage outside of the TV programme. Katie Hopkins from The Apprentice (UK Series Three)

"Celebrity" Reality TV participants

[edit]

Participants on "celebrity" programmes or "celebrity" versions of programmes, such as I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! and Celebrity Big Brother, are not always notable and do not always deserve their own articles. If a contestant's only notability is that of being related to another contestant, being famous for a non-notable event or occurrence (e.g., a "kiss-and-tell story") or being a non-entity on a "celebrity" edition, they do not deserve an article. Otherwise, participants should receive their own articles, WP:BIO, WP:MUSIC and/or WP:PORNBIO permitting.

Articles not satisfying this guideline

[edit]

If an article does not assert or demonstrate notability, try to improve it by one of the following methods:

  • Improve it yourself
  • Ask the article's creator for advice. The template {{nn-warn}} is one way to do this.
  • Put the {{notability}} tag on the article to notify other editors.
  • Merge it into a broader article providing context

If the article can not be improved or is clearly not an appropriate subject for Wikipedia choose one of the following methods:

  • If the article does not assert or demonstrate notability, use the {{db-bio}} tag to request speedy deletion.
  • Use the {{prod}} tag, for articles which do not meet the criteria for speedy deletion, but are uncontroversial deletion candidates. This allows the article to be deleted after five days if nobody objects.
  • For cases where you are unsure about deletion or believe others might object, nominate the article for the WP:AFD process, where the merits will be debated and deliberated for 5 days.
