Wikipedia:Naming conventions (conflicts and protests)
This is a failed proposal. Consensus for its implementation was not established within a reasonable period of time. If you want to revive discussion, please use the talk page or initiate a thread at the village pump. (March 2023.) There is clear consensus against the proposal at this time. |
The following rules generally apply when naming articles about conflicts and protests, although occasional exceptions may apply.
Terms to use
[edit]Use a combination of WP:COMMONNAME and WP:PRECISE when deciding what terms to use for a conflict article title. The term used for a conflict could be very controversial, so avoid WP:BIAS. It is important to avoid WP:EUPHEMISMS, for example, generally avoid terming a war, a "conflict" unless it's a general article about a long-running conflict.
Always avoid unnecessary use of capital letters on terms such as "war", "conflict", "invasion", and "protests", per Wikipedia:Naming conventions (capitalization).
Protest article titles often use the name of the country they have or are occurring in followed by "... protests". However, they can also use the name of the subject which is or has caused the protest, followed by "... protests". If the article on those subject-oriented protests is specific to one country, use "... demonym subject protests", but consider WP:PRIMARYTOPIC for whether to include this disambiguator. The time descriptor is almost always used on protest article titles, unless there is suitable evidence to suggest that this disambiguation is unnecessary, per WP:PRIMARYTOPIC.
Time descriptor
[edit]- For conflicts and protests which are over, and started and ended in one year, then the title should have the year at the start of the title. For example, 2024 Example–Example war or 2024 Example protests.
- For conflicts and protests which are ongoing, but started in the current year, then the title should have the current year at the start of the title. For example, 2024 Example–Example war or 2024 Example protests.
- For conflicts and protests which are ongoing, but started prior to the current year, then the title should use an WP:ENDASH and present, in brackets (2015–present) at the end of the title. For example, Example–Example war (2015–present) or Example protests (2015–present).
- For conflicts and protests which are over, and covered across more than one year, then the title should use an WP:ENDASH (–) and be at the end of the title in brackets. For example, Example–Example war (2015–2024) or Example protests (2015–2024).
