Wikipedia:Meetup/UI/Edit-a-thon
The University of Idaho Library will host an edit-a-thon on 20 April 2016. Join library faculty, staff and students for some social Wikipedia editing!
At the edit-a-thon, which is open to the public, we will create and improve Wikipedia articles on Idaho-related topics, including famous women at the University of Idaho. All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. A brief overview of the basics of Wikipedia editing will be given at the start of the edit-a-thon. We will have library resources and a list of suggested topics on hand.
Guidelines
[edit]Citation format for archives: [Brief description]. [Collection title and ID number (or call number)]. Special Collections and Archives, University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho.
Example: "Letter between Jack and Mary Smith, 1914." University President's Collection, UG-12. Special Collections and Archives, University of Idaho, Moscow, Idaho.
Background
[edit]As part of University of Idaho Library's celebration of Open Education Week 2016 this Edit-a-thon will help improve and generate content using and linking back to the unique institutional holdings at the University of Idaho library, while demonstrating how open educational materials can be used, revised, and redistributed.
One topic of particular interest is to improve articles about famous women of the University of Idaho. Wikipedia's w:meta:Gender gap is well documented. In a 2011 survey, Wikimedia found that less than 13% of its contributors are female.[1] The reasons for the gender gap are up for debate: suggestions include leisure inequality, how gender socialization shapes public comportment, and the contentious nature of Wikipedia's talk pages. The practical effect of this disparity, however, is not. Content is skewed by the lack of female participation. Many articles on notable women in history and art are absent on Wikipedia. This represents an alarming aporia in an increasingly important repository of shared knowledge. We hope this event will inspire a diverse group of new editors to join us!
