Help improve your local history on Wikipedia.
Join us in creating or enhancing Wikipedia articles on Southwest Minnesota history. This event is a great way to make new friends, have fun, and learn something new while adding knowledge about Southwest Minnesota to Wikipedia. No Wikipedia experience necessary, training will be provided. This event is part of a series of eight Local History Wikipedia Edit-a-Thons and is put on by Minnesota Historical Society's Local History Services and hosted by Nobles County Historical Society and the South by Southwest History Collaborative.

[edit]While laptops are provided, we encourage you to bring your own laptop, power cord and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. For the editing-averse, we urge you to stop by to show your support.
Attendees are asked to register beforehand and to bring any books, journals, magazines or newspaper articles relevant to pages they're interested in to use for sources for research.
No Wikipedia experience necessary; Social hour with light refreshments begins at 11 a.m., edit-a-thon at noon. Brief training session at 12:20 p.m. for newcomers. Library resources will be on hand for researching, however, consider bring books and news articles on your own community's or museum's history.

Preparation
[edit]If you're coming, try to create a Wikipedia account beforehand: don't wait until the day to do it! Here's a form you can use. Creating an account makes editing much easier (more info). You'll need to pick a "handle" for your username; you could use your real name, but it's nicer to have the option to be a bit anonymous if you want. Joe's username is Myotus.
Read up on Wikipedia: there are lots of tutorials, please check out the ones provided at the bottom of the page.
Have a think about topics you'd like to work on. Check out their pages and see if there are obvious mistakes or problems. Maybe even do a little research first so you're prepared. Bring along references for the information you want to add. If the topic you're interested in doesn't have a Wikipedia page, we could even create one. If you're stuck, there are lots of pages that need work: here are some suggestions.
