Who are the Missing Women on Wikipedia?
At NUI Galway, and supported by the Wikimedia Community Ireland, we are proposing to host an editathon in the week of International Women’s Day, on Thursday 9th March 2017. The event will take place in the Alice Perry Engineering Building at NUI, Galway.

The aim is to add overlooked women and women’s work to Wikipedia. Wikipedians of all experience levels are welcome to join us! We will copyedit, source, and write articles and can teach you how to do these things too! Bring a friend -- come one, come all!

Wikipedia is the world’s sixth most popular website, but it has a gender problem.

More than 90% of Wikipedia’s editors are male, and content suffers from the bias of its editors.

Some Wikipedia editors are taking matters into their own hands, and “editathons” have been organised around the world to encourage people to come together, learn how to edit articles and contribute content on people and topics that have been ignored.

At NUI Galway, and supported by the Wikimedia Community Ireland, we are proposing to host an editathon in the week of International Women’s Day, in March 2017. The aim is to add overlooked women and women’s work to Wikipedia.

Do you have a suggestion for a missing woman on Wikipedia? Help us build our list of suggestions by either adding it here as a comment, or by tweeting about it and adding the two hashtags of the event: #Wikipedia and #WikiWomenIE

We all know that anybody in the world can edit Wikipedia, adding new articles, expanding existing ones, correcting facts and getting involved in the discussion behind some Wikipedia articles. But have YOU done it? If you did it already, come and share your knowledge with us. If you didn’t, come and learn with us.

On the day, we’ll have experienced wikipedians from the Wikimedia Community Ireland- to guide our steps.

All are welcome, no editing experience is necessary and the event is free.

This event is being organised by Sharon Flynn, Assistant Director at the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching at NUI Galway, and Rachel Hilliard, Chair of the NUI Galway Women's Network, with support from Wikimedia Community Ireland.

How to Prepare

[edit]
  1. CREATE A WIKIPEDIA ACCOUNT (if you don't already have one)

Please set up an account before the event if at all possible. Very few details are needed: a Username, password, and we recommend giving your email, if only to be reminded of your password when you forget it. The short Wikipedia:Tutorial/Registration explains why this is a good idea.

If you like, you can also learn a little about editing ahead of time here: w:en:Wikipedia:Tutorial, or see Getting started on Wikipedia for more information
