Editing Academia: A Wikipedia Workshop
[edit]This edit-a-thon will be held on March 8, 2019, from 2:30–6:00pm at Ryerson University concentrating on topics pertaining to Canadian communication and cultural studies.
The purpose is to inform and engage emerging scholars on an alternative mode of disseminating research, on the process of collaborative cultural production, and to engage with questions of academic authority.
Through this edit-a-thon, we hope to identify the current gaps in communication and cultural scholarship and enrich these gaps with information provided by emerging scholars. In addition, we hope participants will reflect on being active agents in their own knowledge production and how this knowledge is distributed to other communities on a global scale. In the context of the conference we want to aid scholars in sharing their expertise with Canadian topics to the broader Wikipedian community.

List of possible articles to edit
[edit]Below is a list of articles that would benefit from edits and expansion during the edit-a-thon. They are not necessary to edit, but should give an idea of what can be done. The categories are there just to be helpful, but you are welcome to work on anything you like on or off this list. Please note: This is a crowdsourced list. You can help us by adding to it!
We invite novice, beginner, intermediate, and expert Wikipedians interested in learning how to edit and circulate their own work. In this workshop, participants will:
- Become familiar with the Wikipedia’s encyclopedic structure.
- Identify articles that need improvement.
- Execute basic editing such as fixing typos and formatting.
- Execute more intermediate tasks such as adding citations and references.
- Begun or have completed small, but meaningful, edits to a Wikipedia page in need of additions.
- Reflect on their experience of editing during the Roundtable.
