Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/Women's Independence and Financial Power
Women's Independence and Financial Power Wikipedia Edit-a-thon presented by the Smithsonian American Women's History Museum with support from Wikimedia DC
When
- October 28, 2024 - 11 am – 2 pm EDT
Where
- Virtual
Description
- Until 1974, married women could not get credit cards in their own name. Join us for a Wikipedia edit-a-thon on women, credit, and financial power to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, which prohibited lenders from discriminating against consumers based on their sex or marital status.
- Did you know that less than 20% of biographies in English-language Wikipedia are about women? The Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum is working to change that and we need you to help share the stories of women who ensured the success of the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and leaders in the banking industry who expanded services for women.
- This event will have two parts:
- Getting started with Wikipedia edits: 11 am - 12 pm
- Wikipedia edit-a-thon: 12 pm - 2 pm
- Join in for one or both sessions, but new editors are encouraged to attend the introductory session at 11 am.

[edit]- Chapters
- Wikimedia chapters are independent organizations founded to support and promote the Wikimedia projects in a specified geographical region (in most cases, a country). Like the Wikimedia Foundation, they aim to "empower and engage people around the world to collect and develop educational content under a free license or in the public domain, and to disseminate it effectively and globally". There are currently 39 chapters, with at least one on every inhabited continent., i.e. Wikimedia DC
- Chapters
- Wikimedia thematic organizations
- Thematic organizations are incorporated independent non-profits representing the Wikimedia movement and supporting work focused on a specific theme, topic, subject or issue within or across countries and regions. i.e., Wikimedia Medicine.
- Wikimedia thematic organizations
- User groups
- Wikimedia user groups are intended to be simple and flexible affiliates that are an alternative to chapters and thematic organizations - which require more formal requirements. User groups are highly valued as equal players in the Wikimedia movement, i.e., Art+Feminism
