Event description

[edit]

Black Lunch Table mobilizes the creation and improvement of a specific set of Wikipedia articles that pertain to the lives and works of Black artists. The core activity of the BLT Wikimedians user group is edit-a-thons. It allows BLT as a user group to work together to increase the information and participation about and by our community. It also allows us to invite all editors to focus on the knowledge gap that exists around the lives and works of Black artists on the platform.

Recognizing that Wikipedia is not the only platform that lacks information about the lives of Black artists, the BLT Photo Booth increases images of Black artists on Wikimedia Commons. To make notable artists that fall in the Wiki gaps more visible, BLT invites professional photographers to host a pop-up portrait studio at events and make that work open license for free use, edit and distribution.

Please join BLT at the 2024 BUTTER Fine Art Fair on Saturday, August 31st from 11am - 4pm within The Stutz, 1060 North Capitol Avenue for your portrait.

About BUTTER

[edit]

BUTTER is a multi-day fine art fair organized by Ganggang that features artwork made by Black visual artists from Indiana and across the country. Ganggang is a cultural development and creative advocacy firm that works to center beauty, culture, and equity in systems and cities, testing new more equitable models with experiments like BUTTER. Anchored in Indianapolis over Labor Day weekend, BUTTER honors and amplifies the value and worth of Black artists, serving as a new model for economic justice in the arts and a catalyst for career transformation.

Indianapolis Directory of Artists of Color

Black Lunch Table (BLT) is a nonprofit and sixteen-year ongoing artist collaboration. Its primary aim has been the production of discursive sites, wherein cultural producers engage in dialogue on a variety of critical issues.

Black Lunch Table Wikimedians mobilize the creation and improvement of a specific set of Wikipedia articles that pertain to the lives and works of Black artists. In the field of mainstream contemporary art, Black artists are still marginalized within our field.

Wikipedia estimates that 77% of its editors are white and 91% men. Our work shifts this demographic and empowers people to write their own histories. Our sessions and events, including BLT Photobooth and edit-a-thons, equip new editors with the skills and resources to create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles and encourages existing editors to focus on filling Wikipedia knowledge gaps.
