Event description
[edit]As part of the 2016 Forward Union Fair, The Black Lunch Table (BLT) project will create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles pertaining to the lives and works of visual artists from the African Diaspora. Together we will create historical documents that respond to the urgent need for a reconstruction of the art historical record, our historical record as a whole.
All are invited, with no specialized knowledge of the subject or Wikipedia editing experience required. Although we won't have a formal training presentation for this one, we will have experts in attendance to help get you started. We will have a list of suggested artists, cultural creators, and institutions on hand.

History of The Black Lunch Table
[edit]The Black Lunch Table (BLT) is an ongoing collaboration between artists Jina Valentine (Fishantena (talk)) and Heather Hart (Heathart (talk)) which intends to fill holes in the documentation of contemporary art history. In its 10 year existence, the BLT has taken a variety of forms relating to this most recent iteration, in the form of the Wikipedia edit-a-thon. BLT’s aim is the production of discursive sites (at literal and metaphorical lunch tables), wherein cultural producers of color engage in critical dialogue on topics directly affecting our communities. They endeavor to create spaces, online and off, mirroring the activity and creativity present in sites where Blackness and Art are performed.
Forward Union Fair is a political and community action info fair.
In the wake of the 2016 presidential election, many Americans have been asking, “What can I do now?” The goal of Forward Union is to provide practical, action-based resources to help concerned citizens begin to answer this question in meaningful ways. To do so, Forward Union Fair will gather under one roof a coalition of causes: representatives from NGOs, nonprofits, political, and community organizations that are working to lift up and to protect the people, places, and values under threat. This free, public event will connect motivated individuals seeking an outlet with the hard-working groups that need their participation and support. Forward Union believes we can amplify our power by showing up for each other.
Forward Union Fair will take place in an empty, ground floor retail space on Broadway, just south of Astor Place. Fair organizers will provide space and administrative support so that participating groups can share their values and spread their calls to action. Artists and curatorial collectives will also have the opportunity to present new concepts or performances inspired by the current political climate.
Forward Union Fair will culminate with a transition into FU After Dark, continuing the good vibes with an electrifying evening of music and dance. Musicians and social activist artists will amplify our power through performance and music. It will be an evening of inclusion, inspiration, and entertainment, with surprise DJs and musicians to be announced. Tickets are by donation and all proceeds will go towards worthy causes.

Possible articles to edit
[edit]Suggested artist pages for revision and/or creation! This event-specific list focuses on important visual artists/art workers/collectors of the African Diaspora who have some connection to Charlotte and are under-represented on Wikipedia. Our master list can be found under our Tasks tab. Please add a name if you know a Black artist of note who needs a page or needs editing. Please do not add an artist who has a substantial page. We are trying to create new pages and beef up under-represented ones. But be sure they qualify according to Wikipedia's NOTABILITY guidelines. Thanks!
