Welcome! You are invited to the Alden Library Edit-a-Thon, an initiative to foster Wikipedia literacy and share methods and resources for engaging faculty

What: Alden Libraries Wikipedia Edit-a-thon,

When: Friday, October 23, 10am-1pm

Where: Ohio University Alden Library. Friends of the Library Room (Alden 318)

What to bring: Your laptop and power adapter. The Library will also have laptops available.

Focus: Working to build our editing literacies in Wikipedia, to share resources, and improve access, awareness, and use of Alden's collections in Wikipedia

Beginners are welcome! Lunch provided!


Goals

  • To foster Wikipedia editing literacy
  • To share methods and resources for engaging faculty in Wikipedia, especially as it applies to information literacy
  • To improve access, awareness and use of Alden's collections in Wikipedia
  • To celebrate Open Access Week

Methods

  • Share methods and resources for engaging faculty in Wikipedia Information Literacy assignments, activities, and initiatives
  • Demonstration and practice sessions of targeted editing skills in Wikipedia
  • Pre-planned editing projects that engage specific topics and/or Alden resources expand existing articles or create new articles in Wikipedia

  • 10:20-11 Demonstrations and Practice Edits: Matt demonstrates a range of particular skill-sets, allowing time for practice:
  • Wikipedia Policies: Neutral Point of View, No Original Research, Reliable Sources, Conflict of Interest
  • Creating new editor accounts
  • Elements of a Wikipedia Article; User Interface
  • Turning on Visual Editor
  • Visual Editor Tutorial: References, Content, Links, New Sections
  • Introduce Sandboxes: how to create your own sandbox
  • 11:00 Round Robin on Task Proposals: Audience Members share individual projects, questions, and concerns
  • 11:20 Open Workshop. Participants work on editing tasks. Vetter helps participants one-on-one with questions/issues and does additional demos as needed
  • 12:00 Lunch Provided
  • 12:30 Participants report back on what they accomplished.
  • 12:50 Celebrate & Janet Hulm makes closing remarks
