Giovanni Antonio Grassi (10 September 1775 – 12 December 1849) was an Italian Jesuit who led many academic and religious institutions in the United States and Europe. Born in Lombardy, he studied at the Jesuit College in Polotsk, where he began his academic career. He was soon ordered to China as a missionary, but after traveling across Europe for two years attempting to secure passage, his orders were rescinded and he instead began teaching at Stonyhurst College in England. In 1810, Grassi was sent to the United States, where he became known as the "second founder" of Georgetown College for greatly improving its quality and reputation. Grassi returned to Italy in 1817 as Archbishop Leonard Neale's representative before the Propaganda Fide in Rome. He then spent time as a provincial superior in Turin, rector of the Turin College of Nobles, and confessor to monarchs of the House of Savoy. In 1840, he became the rector of the Pontificio Collegio Urbano de Propaganda Fide in Rome. (Full article...)

1509 – A strong earthquake occurred in the Sea of Marmara, devastating much of Constantinople and causing at least 1,000 deaths.
1897 – A sheriff's posse fired on a peaceful labor demonstration mostly comprising Polish- and Slovak-American anthracite coal miners in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, killing 19 people and wounding many others.
1946 – While riding a train to Darjeeling, India, Sister Teresa Bojaxhiu, later Mother Teresa (pictured), experienced what she later described as the "call within the call", directing her to "leave the convent and help the poor while living among them".
1961 – At the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, German driver Wolfgang von Trips's car collided with another, causing it to become airborne and crash into a side barrier, killing him and 15 spectators.

American Football

The discography of American Football, an American rock and emo band, comprises three studio albums, two extended plays (EP), four singles and eight music videos. Because all three albums are eponymous, they are known as LP1, LP2, and LP3. The band was formed in 1997 in Urbana, Illinois, by Mike Kinsella, Steve Lamos, and Steve Holmes while they were students at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. A year later, they released a self-titled EP, followed by their debut studio album, American Football (LP1), in 1999. LP1's music and enigmatic cover art, which shows a green tinted picture of a white house in Urbana, developed a word-of-mouth cult following, and is considered a central influence on the 2010s emo revival. In 2016, they released their sophomore album, American Football (LP2), which reached number 82 on the Billboard 200 and number 3 on the Independent Albums chart. They followed up with American Football (LP3), and an extended play of early demos, Year One Demos, in 2019. (Full list...)

Papilio polymnestor, the blue Mormon, is a species of swallowtail butterfly found in southern India and Sri Lanka. It is a woodland species, often seen on forest paths and near streams. The larvae feed on trees in the family Rutaceae, such as citrus. Young larvae are green with white markings and position themselves on the upper surface of leaves, relying on their cryptic colouring, which resembles bird droppings, for protection. Older larvae seek less conspicuous locations, and have a unique habit of securing their balance by weaving silk on the substratum. This adult male P. polymnestor butterfly was photographed in the Indian state of Kerala.
