    Atlanta in the Civil War

In the American Civil War, the Union and Confederate armies fought a series of battles as the former sought to capture the city of Atlanta, Georgia. The Confederate general John Bell Hood dissipated his army in a series of bold, but fruitless assaults, and was compelled to evacuate the city, allowing the Union to occupy it on September 2.
