Wikipedia:List of U.S. television ratings archives
This is a list of U.S. weekly (or smallest available unit for time period) television ratings archives from 1948 through 1997. (Primarily Nielsen ratings)
National Nielsen ratings for United States television viewing began in March 1950. Although annual data for the Top-rated United States television programs by season is readily available online, the weekly (or bi-weekly in early years) reports are scattered in various archives and newspapers, and are generally not organized. This list is intended to include links to all publicly available weekly lists of Nielsen ratings from 1950 through 1997. (Subsequent to 1997, there have been other archives created such as that at tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com and other sites, though archive.org may need to be used to access this information. There is no reason this page cannot be expanded past 1997 if useful links can be compiled.)
If you find links to missing weeks or better/alternate links, please add to the list. Indicate how many shows are listed in the link, e.g., "(Top 10) or (Top 84)", etc.
Note that many newspapers on Google news archive are good sources for lists, though locating them often requires sifting through various papers and days, because newspapers were not compelled to publish data every week, or to publish the same information every week. When some newspapers had available space, they sometimes listed all the shows for the week. What is listed in newspaper likely also varied over time based on what information Nielsen (or competitors) were releasing at that time.
Many newspapers on newspapers.com also include Nielsen lists, but these are behind a paywall, except for the sometimes-readable OCR text on the page. Use these links only when there is no other link yet identified.
Sources used to compile this list also include materials compiled at www.tvobscurities.com/ (links included below where applicable).
In the very early years of United States TV ratings, note that radio listenership was still dominant over TV. About 0.4% of American homes had TV in 1948, rising to 55.7% in 1954 and 83.2% by 1958.[1]

- Note that viewership is listed, but figures through the week of July 18 come from AGB Television Research—not Nielsen. As such, they should not be used in articles as they cannot be compared with figures after that week (which are from Nielsen). Likewise, only use the household ratings and shares from Nielsen (ignore the AGB figures in parentheses which are listed until the week of July 18).
- All other links below are freely accessible unless they have a paywall (mostly The Washington Post).

[edit]- Access to The Hollywood Reporter ProQuest links below requires a subscription through a school/library. It is not available through The Wikipedia Library's user access to ProQuest.
- Access to the Los Angeles Times links below is free through Newspapers.com clippings.
- The Los Angeles Times viewership is given to the nearest ten thousand.
- Access to the Zap2it and UltimateTV links below is free through the Internet Archive.
- Zap2it's reporting of each week's top 20 shows began with the week of January 6, 1997, but some URLs were not archived. UltimateTV links are given instead, which is essentially the same source but a different URL. The column titles "households" and (later retitled to) "audience" are actually the viewership. Viewership is given to the nearest ten thousand.
