Malicious editing of "No Labels" article

[edit]

I wanted to remove POV and promotional language for the No Labels organization from its article , but someone keeps reverting my edits to a version that makes clearly malicious statement toward the organization. It may be that the article should be locked, or a header warning readers that the article is non-neutral (I don't know how to do that yet.) At any rate, someone should keep an eye on this page. I've got to go babysit grandkids for a while. EveningStarNM (talk) 00:38, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the IP has been warned quite a few times. I believe the IP would be blocked if they continue their attempts again. That said, two of your consecutive reverts of another IP's edits resulted in re-inserting non-npov and disruptive material here and here; quite similar to the primary disruptive IP's edits. I feel you may have done this mistakenly and in a hurry. But that's no excuse that most admins would buy. So please be careful and review the page after you undertake such reverts. Thanks, Lourdes 09:17, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If the disruption continues, you can also try to ask for temporary page protection to stop the PoV pushing and encourage talkpage discussion. Subjective or vague political labels are often problematic especially in controversial articles. If you can't find an indisputable source for such labels, it's often better to avoid them altogether - even if you believe they are entirely correct. I'd also note that the organization's own self-promotional description is inappropriate for the first lead sentence. The organization's goals and activities should be described from an uninvolved PoV based on independent sources. Their own PR statements are largely irrelevant. Question about lineup information for music festival

[edit]

Someone removed a load of line-up information from this page back in April citing "sea of redlinks and mislinks", and yesterday I reverted it because it was useful information and it seemed a shame that someone had put effort into adding it and it had been removed. I accidentally didn't add a note to my undo, I was going to say "lots of information removed for seemingly no good reason". Now the person has undone my undo, saying "unexplained restoration of listcruft". I asked on #wikipedia before my initial undo and I was told by someone that red links are not a good reason to remove information, and I don't understand in general why so much info needed to be removed. It was a useful way of seeing the past lineups and locations for the festival. Can I add this information back once again, and what should I say in the edit note once I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Bojo Skankins (talkcontribs) 10:17, 13 September 2018 (UTC) Bojo Skankins (talk) 10:19, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • No. Don't place the stuff back. Talk:Bloc Festival is the place you can post a query to TenPoundHammer and ask for their comments. In my view, the deletion of the excessive material is sensible. Not only does the material seem promotional and fan cruft, but the excessive number of red links do come out as unrequired. The maximum that can perhaps be done (again, in my opinion) is add a paragraph which consolidates names of some of the notable acts that have performed in the past few years. But again, take this up on the talk page for more inputs. Thanks, Lourdes 10:30, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
How is it promotional if it's literally just listing the names of artists that have played, and the locations and dates of the festival over the years? Other festivals pages have a similar thing, look at Lovebox Festival or Wireless Festival. If the issue is the amount of artists listed, then why not just reduce that instead of deleting everything? Now we literally have no information about the dates the festival was held and where it was held. Can we at least keep the dates and locations of the festival there, and maybe some of the headliners? I'd be happy to pull up some of the lineup flyers and whittle the list of artists down if that's the only problem. Bojo Skankins (talk) 11:49, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Bojo, you probably are not reading my reply properly. Please read my reply again so that you understand the points I have noted. (a) Take this discussion up on the talk page of the article (b) It may probably be sensible to list a summary of the notable artists who have performed over the years; as you mention, it may also be sensible to list in short the dates when this event has occurred. (c) Irrespective, see point (a). Lourdes 12:46, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks for the help. Is there a way I can tag the appropriate person in a post on the talk page so that they see my post? Bojo Skankins (talk) 13:59, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Bojo Skankins, you can ping editors like TenPoundHammer by typing {{u|TenPoundHammer}} on the talk page. See the part titled "Mentions" at Wikipedia:Notifications#Alerts for more information. Warmly, Lourdes 15:07, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Editing protected page

[edit]

Dear,

I'm writing to you in order to inquire about the procedure for opening a specific page for editing. The page in question is rather controversial (https://hr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabirni_logor_Jasenovac). It focuses on the WWII concentration and death camp and in current form represents an insult to families of victims that were executed in that camp- Also it serves as an example for how administrators bend the Wikipedia rules and protect pages that are not based on facts, representative references and ultimately distort the history.

Best,

Igor N. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mister IgorN (talkcontribs) 11:02, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Mister IgorN: Hello, this is the help desk for the English Wikipedia. A page offering assistance for the 'hr' version can be found here. If you have misgivings about an article there is a section specifically for that at that page, but you might also consider raising your concerns at the article talk page. Please note that Wikipedia is not censored. Cheers. Eagleash (talk) 11:43, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Image size and plaecment on Voyager program

[edit]

The very first image on the Voyager program article seems a bit big to me. I've had a scan through MOS but I can't see any guidance on the first image in an article when there's no infobox. The current image isn't unacceptable, but it does seem just too big.

Is there a precedent or policy? Chaheel Riens (talk) 11:08, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Probably a syntax error which I just corrected. The previous syntax was [[File:(filename)|thumb|440px|(caption)]]; as far as I understand, thumb was overriden by 440px, so I removed the latter. MOS:IMGSIZE says Only where a smaller or larger image is appropriate... (do stuff to change image size); I can see no reason to keep the image that big, much less specified in pixels. Clarence Thomas Associate Justice of the Supreme Court

[edit]

How come on his page he is listed as a Judge not a Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Think you need to address this and correct.

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:603:4B80:8BDE:2505:C875:458A:C36A (talk) 11:58, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, at the page Clarence Thomas, the opening sentence states, "who currently serves as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States", so it is not clear what your issue relates to? Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 12:12, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) In Clarence Thomas the short description says "Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States", the first sentence of the lede says that he "currently serves as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States", and the infobox describes him as "Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States". That all seems pretty clear? --David Biddulph (talk) 12:14, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe they are referring to Clarence Thomas (disambiguation), which says "judge"? 331dot (talk) 12:16, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds plausible, I changed it.--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:27, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Edit being reverted as not constructive

[edit]

Trying to edit this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Taylor_Gatto

A website known as school sucks project has express permission from John Taylor Gatto to a serious of youtube videos where Gatto's books are read and put to video. I am trying to add this to the wiki page because it is John Taylor Gatto's content.

https://schoolsucksproject.com/john-taylor-gatto/ — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jmclain637 (talkcontribs) 14:35, September 13, 2018 (UTC)

  • It's a non-notable website, not reliable per our standard guidelines. Your repetitive additions of the website to Wikipedia articles may be considered attempts to promote the website. I understand that may not be your intent here; but it may be seen that way. Let it be and don't re-add the link. I've reverted your latest addition. USA Truck, Inc. is not showing up in Wiki

[edit]

How can we restore this page since someone has deleted it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cassidill.a (talkcontribs) 16:27, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The article's copyright problems are discussed at WP:Copyright problems/2018 August 9, and in that situation an admin will not restore it. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:32, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) If the article you are referring to is USA Truck, it was deleted due to copyright problems. It will not be possible to restore what was deleted. If this company meets the notability guidelines for companies written at WP:ORG, it may merit an article but it should consist of original text. If you work for or represent USA Truck, you need to review the conflict of interest and paid editing policies. (the latter is mandatory per Wikipedia's Terms of Use for paid editors) 331dot (talk) 16:34, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How to get a consensus

[edit]

I've had a few wikipedia articles that I've had edited roll back for certain reasons, and I want to find a way to get a consensus on some things. How do I do that? Johnnysama (talk) 17:58, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Discuss the changes on the article talk page and allow consensus to form there. --David Biddulph (talk) 18:41, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Reassessing articles

[edit]

Hey help desk folks. Just wondering, what's the best way to request a reassessment on an article which you created and would like a second opinion on the rating (otherwise I would just reass it myself myself), but the WikiProject's Assessments/Requests page is completely dead? When I create articles, they tend to start off as stubs, and therefore get assessed as stub or start class, but then I'll sometimes expand them to what would probably be C or B class.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 19:07, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really know what you should do in that circumstance (normally I would say the WikiProject assessment/request, but that obviously won't work). If you post the articles here I (or someone else) can probably take a look - I'm not sure what you should do if this remains a problem - is there a wikiproject of assessments (which I couldn't find), and if so, is it active? I could probably look at things if you posted them on my talk page. LittlePuppers (talk) 00:37, 14 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@LittlePuppers: Thanks for replying. In this particular case, I'm thinking that the Southern eagle ray page could probably be upgraded to B or at least C class. I created it and expanded it to over 10,000 bytes a few months ago, and have been tweaking, refining, and copy-editing recently; and it appears to now meet the B-Class criteria. I listed it at Wikipedia:WikiProject Fishes/Assessment/Requests a long ways back, but didn't get any response - it appears that I'm the only person actually responding to requests on that page at the moment. Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 00:46, 14 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@SkyGazer 512: I've looked through it and I'm not seeing anything that would prevent it from being b-class, so I've reassessed it as such. LittlePuppers (talk) 01:04, 14 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the reassessment. The tweaks you made to the article also look really nice.--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 01:24, 14 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Talk template for page views

[edit]

There is a talk page template for page views. Do you know the template's name? I can't find it. Many thanks. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 21:21, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Anna Frodesiak: {{Annual readership}}. Sam Sailor 21:32, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hi Anna Frodesiak - Template:Graph:PageViews is the basic template for the number of page views to go on an article's talk page. There's also Template:Annual readership, which easily reports the daily page views of an article over time along with a header, using {{Graph:PageViews}}. Cheers, --SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 21:34, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
What you would recommend for 2018 Pacific typhoon season? Perhaps you could add what is appropriate and I can watch and learn. Thank you both! Anna Frodesiak (talk) 21:51, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Anna Frodesiak: How does this look?--SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 21:55, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, thanks for the tweak Sam Sailor - that looks much better. --SkyGazer 512 Oh no, what did I do this time? 22:20, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Looks great! Thank you both. :) Anna Frodesiak (talk) 22:58, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect name

[edit]

My sons wiki page has been changed recently. Now his name is incorrectly listed as Joseph Cole Custer. His correct name is Cole Matthew Custer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1:B109:6ACE:A1B5:23B0:6C4D:E3B4 (talk) 22:27, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed by reverting vandalism. Note that the middle name was removed altogether, as there is no reliable source found for it (and we cannot regard your anonymous request as a reliable source to change it to the one you specified). General Ization Talk 22:29, 13 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
