Wikipedia editing workshop and hands-on session (10:30-1:00)
Come learn how to edit Wikipedia, the world's largest encyclopedia! The first part of the session (from 10:30-11:15) will be a short class for new and beginning editors in how Wikipedia works, why getting involved in it matters, and how to get started. The next part (11:30-1:00) will be a hands-on workshop devoted to practicing editing and improving articles using UC Davis library resources. Bring your Wikipedia questions and topics that you are interested in working on (you don't need to be an expert!) or see the to-do list for ideas. (Participants are welcome to come for just the class or for just the hands-on portion).
schedule:
10:30-11:15: Introduction to editing Wikipedia (more experienced editors can just get started)
11:15-11:30: Break
11:30-1:00: Edit-a-thon! hands-on editing practice using library resources -- work individually or one-on-one with an experienced editor, get your questions answered and make Wikipedia articles better! Editors of the DavisWiki are also welcome. (stay the whole time or as long as you like)
Workshop on teaching with Wikipedia (2:10-3:30)
Dozens of faculty around the country and the world have used writing for Wikipedia in their classrooms to engage students and teach skills like media literacy, critical thinking, expository writing, collaboration and research skills. How do these assignments work, and what are some best practices? This workshop, geared towards faculty, staff and graduate students who teach with writing and research assignments, will provide a brief introduction to getting started editing Wikipedia, show some example assignments and resources available for faculty, discuss the difficulties of having students write in a real-world editing environment, and explore ideas for classroom projects.
Everyone is welcome and both sessions are drop-in. Sign up below if you plan on attending by signing your name with four tildes like this: ~~~~, sign up on Facebook, or email Phoebe to sign up!
