Introduction to Before Now Is Tomorrow

Before now is tomorrow uncovers rare and obscured cultural heritage to publish online for open access and free reuse.

Initiated in 2018 by staff within the College of Design and Social Context's (DSC) Academic Development Group (ADG), BNT is Working with academics across RMIT who see value in offering students a practical experience within the broad scope of the project.

For example, Media Design students have helped to create and maintain the project's web presence, as well as the digitisation, publication and creative reuse of cultural artifacts found in the project; Information Management students have helped to negotiate copyright and release of artifacts, and liaise with State and Federal archives and libraries around the artifacts found in the project; Screen and Media students have designed and created multi media works based on the artifacts uncovered in the project.

Before Now is Tomorrow is open to participants outside RMIT as well.

If you're a small organisation, or someone in possession of an historical artifact that you would like to see digitised and made publicly available, contact us for advice.

One of the first artifacts uncovered by this project was a short film possibly entered in the 1952 Olinda Film Festival. The film is a short comedy set in the Hills around Emerald. The reel had “Olinda Film Festival – Tea Party” written on paper in its canister. it isn't certain who made the film, or who the people in it are, but it is speculated they are some of the festival organizers.

The Olinda Film Festival went on to become the Melbourne International Film Festival, making this film historically significant to MIFF as well as Olinda, the Hills and the period generally.
