Bringing Indiana Libraries and their Collections to Wikidata (workshop)[edit]About the Event[edit]Let’s make sure we put your library on the map! A growing number of cultural heritage institutions are contributing their curated data to Wikidata. Sharing data about collections not only enables new research and creative projects, but also helps researchers find an institution’s collections. Wikidata is the newest project of the Wikimedia Foundation, the organization that also sponsors Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia. Wikidata is a free multilingual knowledge base which aims to serve as the hub for structured linked data for all Wikimedia projects. It provides an open and global platform for data sharing. Wikidata allows you to affiliate data about collections with the library or museum that holds the items. However, if the library or museum is not already represented in Wikidata, data about the collection cannot be linked to the institution that holds it. Thus, every Indiana library needs a Wikidata entry. During this workshop, we will give an overview of Wikidata, talk about the involvement of other libraries with this project, show external tools used to display Wikidata’s data, and demonstrate how to create an entry for your library and collections. When: Tuesday, August 21st, 2018 from 10:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. Where: IUPUI University Library, room UL1130 # TLEU credits: 4 Facilitators[edit]Attendees[edit]Steffity |
