From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Original - Dr. Hendrik P.N. Muller (1859-1941), consul general of the Orange Free State in the Netherlands during the Second Boer War, drawn by Dutch artist Jan Toorop, 1902.
Reason
This pencil and crayon black and white portrait of a historical figure, well-known in his time:
  • is a technically strong and artistically powerful image, with lots of detail, sufficient contrast and razor sharp;
  • is of print quality;
  • is well over a 100 years old and shows little sign of damage;
  • has a good composition, focusing on the subject, showing both power of office and character;
  • is historically and artistically a one-off;
  • is of importance for the biography of the depicted person, but also for South African, Dutch, and British history.
