It has a human element--the man is posing for the camera while eating. But it's unsettling because the blasted trees indicate heavy artillery bombardment. His feet are covered in cold, sloppy mud. And there's no sign of the enemy because this has become the everyday living circumstances for those who live in the trenches. Apart from the few pieces of modern equipment, this image would be a familiar sight to the European soldiers of past centuries.
