Background
[edit]The Groundwater Atlas was compiled on a MediaWiki based platform, with the intention that the information could, at some point in the future, be migrated to Wikipedia. Following discussions with Wikimedia UK, a selection of this text was licensed under a CC-BY-SA 3.0, compatible with Wikimedia. A number of images were also licensed under a wiki compatible license.
Text from the Africa Groundwater Atlas which bears the icon stating that it has been licensed under a CC-BY-SA 3.0 license can be used to create or improve Wikipedia articles, as long as it is properly attributed using the template. (See the "Openly licensed text" tab above.)

Editathon
[edit]An intial editathon was be held at the IAH Congress on Monday 23rd September 2019, between 4-7pm. A number of draft articles were created, to be worked on going forward.
How to add an article to Wikipedia using openly licensed text from the British Geological Survey
[edit]- Create a Wikipedia account
- Learn about editing - you can learn to edit Wikipedia in under an hour using Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Adventure.
- Select a red-linked article that you wish to create from the list below. These have been linked to create draft articles for ease of use for new and experienced editors alike.
- Follow the guidelines given by the British Geological Survey for converting the Africa Groundwater Atlas text into a suitable format for Wikipedia.
- The Wikipedia Cheatsheet summarises the main Wikitext codes you will need.
- Remember to add the hydrogeology map image from the project media page .
- Ensure that the openly-licensed text has been appropriately attributed (Please note that when attributing openly licensed text from the British Geological Survey, that the publisher should be listed as "British Geological Survey" when using the Open License text template - see instructions below.) - we recommend that you use the Visual Editor for this.
- Add appropriate categories - we recommend category:Hydrogeology, category: Water in Africa, category: Geology of Africa (plus Water in... and Geology of... pages for individual countries, if they exist).
- Add the below templates to the article's talk page where appropriate (copy and paste source code)
- Save your draft. If you are a new user, please leave a message on Sara Thomas' talk page, or email scotland@wikimedia.org.uk with a link to your draft, for it to be checked and moved.

- Pick a red-linked article from the list, and open the correlating article in the Africa Groundwater Atlas.
- Click on the red link to start your article, and follow the instructions below.
- Once you've finished, save your draft article / move it to mainspace.
