Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/SpebiBot
- The following discussion is an archived debate. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. The result of the discussion was Speedily Approved.
Operator: Spebi
Automatic or Manually Assisted: Presuming automatic
Programming Language(s): Python
Function Summary: Substs {{unsigned}} templates and vandalism warnings on talk pages and archives.
Edit period(s) (e.g. Continuous, daily, one time run): 2 – 3 hours a day on weekends, around half an hour and a full hour on some weekdays.
Edit rate requested: 2 edits per minute
Already has a bot flag (Y/N): No bot flag at present
Function Details: SpebiBot will collect data from Special:Whatlinkshere for the templates I listed above and will filter it to show only talk pages (user talk, talk, wikipedia talk, etc). SpebiBot will then substitute the templates, to reduce server strain.
Betacommand is currently writing the code, so if the bot is approved to run there might be some time before SpebiBot actually starts running. Another function (yet to be confirmed by Betacommand) is updating the tallies on RfAs.
Only the following templates will be substituted if not already by SpebiBot:
{{unsigned}} templates | Vandalism warning templates | Other | ||

Discussion
[edit]Sounds like a good idea for a bot here. A few questions to the operator:
- It substitutes the {{unsigned}} template, not adds it right?
- Correct, it substitutes already placed unsubstituted {{unsigned}} tags. +spebi ~ 09:08, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- Is there a possibility of making it a permanent automatic bot (i.e. hosted on a linux box)?
- Well, if the bot seems to be successful in its' duties then, yeah, it is a possibility. But not straight away when it is approved (if it does get approved), of course. +spebi ~ 09:08, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, if there is a RfA tally updater in there, I'm in support of that - it's really needed. Good luck with the BRFA. E talk 07:46, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- Thank you for your comments, E. ;) +spebi ~ 09:08, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- Following the replies to my questions, I will be supporting this request for approval. It's a good idea for a multiple-tasked bot and I'm sure the code will be fine if it is created by Betacommand. E talk 09:12, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've heard stuff about an RfA tally bot, you probably want to ask on Wikipedia talk:RfA about using it, make sure there's support. Also, it needs to be able to interpret any vote starting with #, as there are people who say something like, #I'm MessedRocker, and I Approve this candidate, and it should ignore lines with one or more colons immediately after the #.
As for the substing, that task is Speedily Approved. --ST47Talk 10:59, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- For the RfA tally task, it would have to look for # then Support and # then Oppose to count it wouldn't it? E talk 11:02, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- If that's how it works, then it's not going to work. I assumed it would split the RfA page into support, oppose, and neutral. What's wrong with the bot that updates the Wikipedia:BN? Can't it do this? --ST47Talk 11:09, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- That's Tangobot if you want to drop him a line and see what he does to count the votes. E talk 20:50, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- It is split up into sections, so it just has to count the lines starting with # in each section. It wouldn't be too hard. Also, I thought TangoBot did it? I have a tally by that bot on my user page. Matt/TheFearow (Talk) (Contribs) (Bot) 21:17, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- I wasn't aware of the fact that TangoBot updated BN at the time I came up with the rfa tally idea. He does count the supports, opposes and neutrals and adds them to the table. I'll talk to Tangotango later on today. And, thanks again :) +spebi ~ 21:26, 26 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

- Update: SpebiBot won't be running the substing task until Betacommand has finished the code, so my apologies for confusion caused over the bot's current inactivity. Sebi [talk] 09:46, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
- Another update: Judging from the discussion on the RfA talk page, the bot won't be going ahead with its tally updating task. SpebiBot's only tasks are to subst the templates above. Sebi [talk] 09:29, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
