Function details:
The bot will automatically copy medical articles from MDWiki to the user namespace of volunteer translators. These users will then translate the articles into different Wikipedia languages. The process aims to facilitate the expansion of medical knowledge across various language versions of Wikipedia.
The bot operates continuously, processing approximately 3,000 pages initially, with potential for more as the project grows.
These pages are currently under my username, after getting permission I will move them to the bot name.
Discussion
[edit]I genuinely don't understand what this bot is or is trying to do. I randomly chose a dozen articles in that category, and every single one of them already exists on Wikipedia. Why do we need to make duplicate copies of a different wiki entirely to translate to other Wikimedia languages, when those articles already exist on enWiki? - I will also note User_talk:Primefac#Automated_tool and User_talk:Mr._Ibrahem#Your_contributions. Primefac (talk) 22:52, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
- I will ask user:Doc James to answer the first question. The second one no longer active it's not working at enwiki any more. I only ask permission to made edits on the bot sub pages. Mr. Ibrahem (talk) 02:35, 30 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So we are translating from a work space for a number of reasons:
- We are generally only translating the leads of articles. And EN WP has some who believe leads should not have references. Without references leads become untranslatable as the target language rejects them. For example no refs here Dracunculiasis compared to mdwiki:Dracunculiasis. We like only the leads present to decrease confusion for the translators.
- We try to write in easier to understand language. Some folks here wish to write at a level which makes translation by none technical experts difficult eg Farsightedness versus MDWiki:Farsightedness
- The Content Translation tool by the WMF has had issues handling references over the years. Working from a work space has allowed us to adjust references before the text is placed into the tool to accomodate known issues with CTX. This issue which was present for the last 8 years was thankfully just fixed.[1]
- EN WP struggles with advocates who alter content to what the references present do not support. Here for example the fact that this condition is rare was removed.[2]

- It is not our job to support wiki effort that isn't even a WMF wiki, and to be frank, I think each of those subpages ought to be deleted as being on the verge of WP:NOTWEBHOST. If MDWiki wants to fork the content, that's their prerogative, but we do not need to entertain that choice here. At the minimum, this BRFA should get a "Consensus required" stamp. - Denied. If there is a consensus to use enWiki as a backdoor for content creation on other wikis by using us as a hosting space for non-WMF content, feel free to re-file a new request. Primefac (talk) 12:02, 3 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
