Operator: Hazard-SJ (talk · contribs)
Time filed: 03:49, Thursday November 10, 2011 (UTC)
Automatic or Manual: Semi-automatic unsupervised: The bot makes edits automatically, which the operator does not constantly review
Programming language(s): AutoWikiBrowser
Source code available: AutoWikiBrowser
Function overview: Template and category addition and/or modification
Links to relevant discussions (where appropriate): Extension of Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/Hazard-Bot 2 per these edits.
Edit period(s): Only when I, the operator, am online
Estimated number of pages affected: N/A
Exclusion compliant (Y/N): Y
Already has a bot flag (Y/N): Y
Function details: Hazard-Bot will add and/or modify templates and categories to pages, based on instructions I give it, including a list or lists of pages, and what the edit should be (e.g. replacing Category "A" with Category "B" or Template "1" with Template "2", or to add etc.). More examples of these are adding WikiProject article assessment templates to talk pages, and adding maintenance templates to articles. However, it will need bot AutoWikiBrowser access.
Discussion
[edit]As mentioned at the AWB check page, this is too broad. You still need to be much more specific about what the bot is doing. - Kingpin13 (talk) 08:34, 10 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- I intend to make changes such as category renaming (changing categories on pages to the new category name), adding new or otherwise related categories after manually compiling a list, removing deleted categories, renaming templates (and maybe adding parameters), adding and/or modifying templates (like WikiProject templates to/on the top of talk pages on behalf on these wikiprojects, infobox addition/changes etc.), both by request in places like WP:BOTREQ and by what I see needs or should be done. Hazard-SJ ± 00:24, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- This is far too broad to be approved as fully automated (also note, I have struck out "semi" from above, semi automated means that every edit is manually approved). You are either going to have to be more specific (e.g. it would be fine to approve the bot to add Wikiproject banners), or each task will need to be approved on a case by case basis (e.g. The bot will be adding/removing the following categories from these pages) --Chris 11:10, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- I hope I understand your point. The bot will be adding/modifying/removing WikiProject banners (± parameters) to talk pages. It will also add templates to and remove templates from articles, generally per a discussion. I will also use it for category renaming. Is that better? Hazard-SJ ± 21:53, 12 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Ok:

- "The bot will be adding/modifying/removing WikiProject banners (± parameters) to talk pages." Cool, that's fine, I'm happy to approve that as a fully automated task.
- "It will also add templates to and remove templates from articles, generally per a discussion." "per a discussion" -> that is too vague/broad. What discussion, where? How do we know the bot won't start removing templates without consensus? Something more detailed, like "It will remove templates that are listed at Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion#To_orphan from articles." would be better.
- "I will also use it for category renaming." Renaming what categories, when, where, why? Please be more detailed, I need to be able to know that you won't just start renaming random categories, without proper discussion. (e.g. I will be rename categories, based on closed Wikipedia:Categories for discussion)--Chris 02:48, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Okay, I hope I get your point now. The tasks are listed below:
- The bot will be adding/modifying/removing WikiProject banners (± parameters) to talk pages.
The bot will rename categories, based on closed categories for discussion.- The bot will make the relevant template-related changes (removing or modifying) based on Wikipedia:Templates for discussion#Completed discussions.
- I hope that was specific enough. Hazard-SJ ± 05:38, 13 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Okay, I hope I get your point now. The tasks are listed below:
Ok, that seems better. Approved for trial (7 days). Please provide a link to the relevant contributions and/or diffs when the trial is complete. --Chris 02:50, 16 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Thanks. Also, for number 3 above, I fond Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Holding cell (same content). Hazard-SJ ± 04:49, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I notice for WikiProject banners you are forcing WPBIO tags and talk headers from the top of the talk pages, and also not using the WikiProjectBannerShell. I would suggest you use KingbotK's plugin for WikiProject tagging. - Kingpin13 (talk) 08:42, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- I've noticed this as well. I was unaware of the plugin and its function. Hazard-SJ ± 21:57, 19 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I think considering this and that Cydebot already does this, the categories for discussion should be removed from the task. --Chris 06:58, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- I think so too. Done Hazard-SJ ± 01:18, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Trial complete.—added on behalf of operator. --slakr\ talk / 22:17, 29 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
This bot should not be approved for TfD related tasks. It is clear that the operator is too careless, and does not have a firm understanding of what needs to be done to replace a template. As a case in point, see here, with complaints regarding the bot operator's inability to properly replace a template. 198.102.153.2 (talk) 00:25, 2 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In light of this, I move that the bot be denied. I am not convinced that you as an operator are ready to handle these tasks in a fully automated fashion. I would suggest getting more experience with AWB, and the areas in question before seeking another BRFA. --Chris 10:50, 2 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- I apologize for the disruptions caused, but I'll be revising my intended tasks as stated below:
- The bot will be adding/modifying/removing WikiProject banners (± parameters) to talk pages.
- The bot will substitute templates per Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Holding_cell#To_substitute (only that WP:TFD task).
- This should be safer, as I have previously done successful substitutions with the bot. Also, I will be using the KingbotK plugin for task 1 as stated above. Hazard-SJ ± 13:51, 3 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- No, I think it would be better to leave TFD alone for the moment until you have more experience in the area. However, I think it would be alright to approve you to add and remove Wikiproject banners --Chris 17:37, 4 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Approved. For "adding/modifying/removing WikiProject banners (± parameters) to talk pages.", only. --Chris 17:37, 4 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
