Discussion
[edit]Cant you just remove the category from the template and it will be emptied? Werieth (talk) 11:50, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- No, because in this case the category isn't in the template, but it's added through a template parameter. The bot will replace this parameter in the pages of the category. For example to implement the Category:NES game covers to Category:Nintendo Entertainment System game covers rename it will replace the "NES" parameter in {{Non-free video game cover}} with "Nintendo Entertainment System". - Couldnt you just check for that name and use a switch to use an alternate category? Werieth (talk) 13:23, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- I don't think that's a good idea for a template, which can have 10 parameters for video game consoles, and this parameter could be in anyone of them. Also this is a rather general BRFA, and using switch would be not feasible in all cases. Armbrust The Homunculus 13:36, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- @Armbrust:. I looked into this one, and reckoned it could be done quite easily by using a sub-template to process the parameter. Ping me if you would like me to implement it. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 16:32, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- Okay, but if you implement it, than what will I use to trial the bot? Armbrust The Homunculus 17:32, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- Not sure this bot is a good idea. In most cases fixing the template is the better solution. Werieth (talk) 17:54, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- Sometimes maybe, but certainly not always. Making template, like {{Image requested}}, more complex just for the renaming of a category is overkill. Also IMO if @BrownHairedGirl: implements
hisher idea, than it should cover every video game consoles should be considered in the subtemplate, and this not just this case. Like PS2 for Playstation 2 or PSP for PlayStation Portable. Armbrust The Homunculus 18:00, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply] - And even after the template is fixed, it would need some time before the category empties, and it can't be deleted until than. Armbrust The Homunculus 18:01, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- His? :(
- No problem in extending the sub-template for other consoles. I'll do a test run. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 19:03, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- Sorry. Fixed. (It should have a wide variety for Windows.) Armbrust The Homunculus 19:21, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- @Armbrust: Sub-template now created at Template:Non-free video game cover/platform. (abbreviations expanded for values PSP, PS2, NES)
- Sandbox test version at Template:Non-free video game cover/sandbox.
- Test cases now created at Template:Non-free video game cover/testcases.
- Lemme know what you think. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 21:16, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- Added more parameters, but it looks okay to me. Armbrust The Homunculus 22:33, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
- OK, I'll go live with it. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:54, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
