This page in a nutshell: An edit-a-thon is a special type of meetup to improve the encyclopedia. It is usually offline, focused on a specific encyclopedic topic, and is a great way to attract new Wikipedians. This event is being run by Barclays PLC for its employees to promote technical awareness and improve Wikipedia

Barclays edit-a-thon is a structured event being held globally on Barclays PLC premises to promote the editing of Wikipedia. Its goals are to help Barclays employees learn how to edit Wikipedia and to add or update interesting content which is unique.

The format has been used in Barclays for other events using the company's global video conferencing facilities.

The event will follow the published Wikipedia guidelines on How to run an edit-a-thon.

History

The name Edit-a-thon is a playful allusion to the event's origins, and fits the theme of other hosted events such as the Barclays hackathon.^[1]

The Edit-a-thon arose as part of the Barclays colleague development agenda to create new wikipedians thereby promoting technology awareness in the local technology community.

The original idea for holding the event was driven by an item on Radio 4's Woman's Hour referring to the published research that only 9–13% of Wikipedia editors are women.^[2]

The first Edit-a-thon will be held at Barclays Technology Centre, Radbroke, Knutsford and at Barclays sites in London; Vilnius, Lithuania ; Pune, India; New York, New Jersey and Singapore on 12 June 2014.

Objectives

The primary goal is to get Barclays employees interested in editing Wikipedia and to try and promote editing to more female employees. The idea came from the Women in Technology Radbroke group and was then expanded to include all employees and multiple locations around the world.

Structure and participatory process

Registration will be required to attend the event via a Sharepoint page on the Barclays Intranet. Editing of Wikipedia content does not require registration with Wikipedia however it is encouraged in line with Wikipedia's own guidelines. Company email addresses should not be used to participate.
The UK event will be hosted in Cheshire and London. Wikimedia experts will be on site to provide help and assistance.
In the New York/New Jersey Area there will be volunteers contributing to the Global Edit-a-thon to update content in Wikipedia.
Wikipedia experts will be available globally to help editors contribute to content in the best way.
The event plans to use social media for external communications to show progress through the day. #barclayseditathon

Hosting and attending

The event is open to all Barclays employees and generally restricted only by space constraints. Participants are typically encouraged to sign up in advance.

The event will be hosted in nineteen sites from Singapore, Lithuania, India, UK and USA. The event will start in Singapore and continue to "follow the sun" finishing in New York. The event will use Barclays video conferencing facilities on a continuous basis throughout the day - which is expected to last some twenty hours.

Historical precedents

The first event will be hosted on the 12th June 2014. If this is deemed successful more events will be planned on a regular basis.

Help and Support

Barclays colleagues and Wikimedia experts will be on had during the day to assist in editing. Colleagues will be asked to create accounts before hand – however anyone can participate and create accounts on the day if needed.

Cursory searching via wikipedia or search engines will reveal a wealth of Wikipedia editing tutorials. These PDF file links are a good starting point for new users to Wikipedia editing. A PDF reader will be required to view these. They are free to use and print.
