Steering Committee Agenda for 11/4/10

Agenda

• Introduce the School Recruitment List (Annie)
  • Spreadsheet, distributed to steering committee, lists the status of all the professors Annie and other WMF staff have been in contact with who responded. Staff updated the spreadsheet as we go along.
    • Feel free to add new contacts to the spreadsheet.
  • For spring term, Annie will continue to take the lead on the final stages (phone and/or in person) of securing commitments from faculty. For the summer and beyond, most or all of that will transition to volunteers.
  • Main role for ambassadors in recruitment for spring: making initial contacts and getting professors to the point where they can talk with Annie and possibly commit to working with the program.
  • New Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and assignment guidelines have been drafted, soon to be shared publicly. Also, we'll have an example sylllabus soon, hopefully by tomorro. These materials can be use as introduction to gain profs then to pass them to Annie for securing commitment.
  • Main role for ambassadors to find/recurit Campus Ambassadors for spring
    • Best practices: two ambassadors per class, preferably one experienced Wikipedian paired with one inexperienced or non-Wikipedian who has great teaching skills and/or leadership skills
    • Schools where a professor has given a verbal commitment are the ones to focus on for recruiting campus ambassadors
    • Can we start doing this right now for the verbal commitments we already have, calling for participation from the community and/or current ambassadors?
      • Possible way: for schools where there is already an ambassador presence, ask ambassadors to help recruit new ambassadors if needed
      • For schools without ambassador presence, we can start placing geonotices

• • • Recruiting Ambassadors will be split amongst the steering committee
      • • Each member of the committee will be the point person for a couple of schools then the current Ambassadors can relay potential Ambassadors
        • Annie will create a new spreadsheet with the list of schools and we will each sign up to recruit.
      • Annie will create a "best practices" guide as well.
      • 19 classes (approximately) with verbal commitments so far, spread across ??? schools.

• Goals of the project
  • Anticipate the full support of 18-20 schools
    • full support = printed material, campus ambassador, help of Foundation
    • yet, any school can participate and be giving links
  • Adding some competitiveness to the program
    • We will identify professors who meet our full exectations as "Wikipedia Teaching Fellows"
    • Adds weight to the program for professors
    • Makes expectations more clear
      • ex: start date

  • • Create a second committee - partly made of the online ambassadors from the steering committee
      • yes, this will be committee? subcommittee? another group of eyes to look through applications to gage below under selection process
      • Online Ambassador "in-training" process so that we can make them good mentors
