[edit]

Have you read the AMA FAQ?

  • Answer:Yes I have

How would you describe the nature of this dispute? (policy violation, content dispute, personal attack, other)

  • Answer: It is complex:
  1. I have aquantaince-level knowledge of the person in real life (we have never formally met, but we have a common background, and know who each other are)
  2. We share common interests, and edit the same articles. His edits tend to be autobiographical, unreferenced, and non neutral. I have tried to
    1. incorporate his edits where possible by referencing them and making them NPOV.
    2. be helpful by refering him to relevent wikipedia policies and guidelines for the express purpose of helping him become a better editor
    3. If I have to remove his edits as being entirely unrescuable, I have done so only with copious explanations, and again referals to relevant wikipedia policies.
    4. All of my comments have been civil and with in a helpful tone. To this point, I have tried to assume good faith on his part, and continue to try to be helpful rather than correcting in my tone.
  3. He seems to show little interest in becoming a better editor, as he has refused to desist from the kind of edits we are in conflict about.
  4. He makes very incivil comments in edit summaries, takes ownership of articles, and borders on insults.
  5. He has made comments on his main user page that I can only construe as being insulting directly to me (in particular, he has a comment that says he would rather be castrated than be a stay at home parent; I mention that I am a stay at home parent on my main user page.
  6. Lastly, he has vandalised my user page, which was the "last straw" that led me here (see:[1], .
  7. P.S., while I was writing this up, additional incivil behavior came to my attention: He posted this at my talk page: [2].

What methods of Dispute Resolution have you tried so far? If you can, please provide wikilinks so that the Advocate looking over this case can see what you have done.

What do you expect to get from Advocacy?

  • Answer:Right now, I only need private consultation. I have never been party to a conflict of this nature before, and up until an hour ago (when my user page was vandalised) I thought I would not need further dispute resolution. Still, at this point I only want someone to review the conflict at hand, and give me advice on how to proceed. I may in the future (but do not now) wish further action UNTILL I have received advice from an advocate.

Summary:

[edit]

The summary for this dispute is laid out above. To be more concise:

  • An editor, whom I have a connection to in real life, makes non-neutral, autobiographical, or unreferenced edits
  • I have tried to correct these problems, and be helpful to the editor, with an eye on helping him become a better editor
  • He has become progressively more incivil as time has gone on, to the point that now he is openly vandalising my userpage.
  • To date, I only want consultation with an advocate, and am not interested in taking any further action pending the advice of said advocate. If an advocate could view the pages I reference above, and give their honest opinion of how I should handle this, I would be most appreciative.

Hi. I have read your statement and think that this is a very complex matter. I would like to know how you are related in real life. For the time been, I think you should just not edit the involved articles as per step 2 in WP:DR. -- Nathannoblet 00:48, 5 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reading things over. We graduated from the same High School about 5 years apart. We know many of the same people, and participated in many of the same activities while there, but we did not actually know each other while there (we never attended at the same time.) If it helps anything, this isn't like we were just in high school. I graduated in 1994, he gradutated in 1989. Someone (it might have been you) sent me an email suggesting a Request for Comment might be appropriate. Just a few questions/comments: 1) If I proceed with an RfC, what are a) the possible outcomes of that? and b) what do you see as the LIKELY outcomes of that? 2) If the situation does not change, what kind of timetable is an RfC on, and where should I proceed from there? 3) I have stopped editing the articles in question for the time being, and have no plans for future edits. Should I put the article up for RfC as well as a User Conduct RfC or should I just do a user conduct RfC? Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter! --Jayron32 15:55, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please close this discussion for the time being. Apparently I was not the only one this guy pissed off. An admin has blocked him and several sock puppets. As he has already caught he ire of the admins, this is being handled at a level over my head. The admin in question has recommended that any future problems be referred directly to him. Thanks again for all of your help! --Jayron32 18:30, 6 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
