When You Wake Up is the first studio album by singer, songwriter and drummer Molina. The album was released on 11 October 2024, and distributed by Escho. Molina the plays the drum, pan flute, keyboard and guitar in some tracks. Most songs were written by her during pregnancy, which is the period she also went on a break (2022–2023). The album talks about nature, her family, and focusing on the immediate and simplicity.[2]
Background
[edit]The album was slowly written and composed between 2022 and 2023, the period Molina was on a "break". In that period she was also pregnant, which ended up influencing a lot of the songs, along with themes about nature, childhood, motherhood and her Chilean heritage. Molina wanted to focus more on using the guitar and making Shoegaze, like some of her favorite artists did, such as Cocteau Twins; she also plays the pan flute, keyboards and drum in some tracks. Her friends helped her make make the album throughout, but specially ML Buch, Erika de Casier, Fine Glindvad and Astrid Sonne — some of her friends at the Rhythm Music Conservatory.[2][3][4][1]

Pitchfork | 7.6/10[1] |
Emma Madden of Pitchfork wrote: "Blending bodily rhythms and shoegazing abstraction, the Danish Chilean composer and singer's debut constructs a subtle play of perception and ambiguity", and: "Like the best shoegaze records, When you wake up plays with listeners' perceptions, specifically the ability to detect underlying rhythms for ourselves." Madden also complimented Molina's "approach to guitar, and to songwriting in general on When you wake up" as "each song is a wide and woozy landscape: 'A New Day' a pixelating sunset coming in and out of focus, 'I Am Your House' a Mica Levi-like city garden. It is as disarmingly romantic as any shoegaze record, and just as impressionistic."[1] The album was also received positively by The Fader.[4]
