The Men's 77 kg weightlifting competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place on 10 August at the Pavilion 2 of Riocentro.[1] Nijat Rahimov originally won the gold medal but was disqualified in March 2022 by the Court of Arbitration for Sport for a doping violation (urine substitutions in the weeks before the Games).[2][3] As of March 2022, medals for this event have not been reallocated, a process that could extend to 2024.[4] If the medal is reallocated, Lü Xiaojun stands to win his third Olympic weightlifting gold medal (also in 2012 and 2020).

CAS confirmed that Nijat Rahimov should be sanctioned with 8 years of ineligibility. The disqualification of all results obtained by the athlete from 15 March 2016 (date of the first evidence of urine substitution) until the provisional suspension imposed on 18 January 2021, which includes the gold medal obtained at the Olympic Games Rio 2016 (Men's 77 kg), was also confirmed.

The reallocation process goes through several phases and, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC), it could be finished this year or it could take until 2024.
