Valt the Wonder Deer (Valt's Journey in season 1, subtitled The Search for Terracotta Warriors in season 2, Journey to the Land of Darkness in season 3, Tales of Two Deer in season 4) is an animated television series that was released to Tencent Video in China on December 31, 2016. The series is produced by DreamEast Pictures and is distributed worldwide by Jetpack Distribution.
The second season premiered October 22, 2018, and ended November 26. A third season featuring new anthropomorphic and angular designs for the characters, and was released in 2021. A fourth season featuring new anthropomorphic and angular designs for the characters, was released in 2023.[4]
Plot
[edit]Season 1
[edit]Valt the Wonder Deer follows the adventures of Valt, a wonder deer and his five friends as they journey to obtain special powers granted by the Five Magical Elements, as well as rescue his trapped parents, the Deer King and Queen, from the evil overlords of the Land of Metal.
Season 2
[edit]After peace and harmony has been restored to the Five Lands, Valt starts to miss his friends even though they're a portal away from him. His vacation however is cut short by more monsters suddenly arriving called the Nanomites; dark, flying swarm of bugs that can turn anything into an enemy. Valt reassembles the guardians to protect the Five Lands, but unbeknownst to him, Da-Ming and his bride are controlling the bugs, and they want to regain their throne.[3]
Season 3
[edit]When Valt and his friends left, Kem was all alone until he saw an amulet of darkness. Kem puts on the dark amulet and he became the Lord of Darkness and turned Da-Ming, Mungo, and Drusilla into stone. He wants to destroy the Five Lands and take over the world. Valt and his friends relays that Kem is in danger. So they start their journey to the Land of Darkness and save their friend before it's too late.
Season 4
[edit]When the seven friends are in the protect crystal for many years, then everything changed when the army of dark deer broke the crystal. The lord of the dark deer chained Valt and Valanteen with the collars of chain to stay together. But then they were saved by Miko the bunny warrior and their friends. She tells them about a Dark Deer named Marcus has been free from the amulet and unleashed the army of dark deer. They must find their way back and save the Five Lands.
Characters

[edit]- Valt (voiced by Ogie Banks) – The main protagonist. A wonder deer and young prince of the Land of Wood. Has grey fur, then at the start of Season 2 is seen to have green color eyes. During Season 1, Valt learns how to tap into his abilities along with guidance from his new friends. These abilities are also reflected into color category of certain elements by saying 'Power Of' along with mention color followed by ability. GREEN:(Lightning Blast, Wind Blast, Grow Power, Camouflage, Levitate, Multi Blast) YELLOW: (Earth Stomp, Super Kick, Sand Blast) RED: (Fire Blast, Teleport) BLUE: (Water Blast, Ice Blast, Storm Blast) METAL: (Iron Deer, Iron Blast) OTHERS: (Rainbow Shield) [5]
- Cobalt (voiced by Benjamin Diskin in season 1 and Mick Wingert in season 2) – A blue monkey and Valt's best friend. He's a smart monkey, carries an enchanted bag that carries a bunch of stuff though sometimes it's difficult to get what he actually wants. Later in Season 2 he discovers a cool new trick of using a fake voice to perform imitation of allies and foes to confuse and mislead others. At the end of Season 2, Cobalt discovers his family history, he can not just be a dinosaur whisperer of understanding the creatures, but a dinosaur leader to command them almost like a special power. This talent along with obtaining a helmet worn by his ancestor, came pretty useful near the final battle against Sying's dino army. [5]
- Kem (voiced by Matthew Christo) – A taotie[5] from the Land of Metal. When he eats red berries, grows larger and bulkier for muscle work and eats green berries to return to normal size. During Season 1 it's reveal that he's actual Da-Ming & Drusilla's son, and he was a blue taotie. From Season 1 he was green, but by the start of Season 2 appears in his blue color. Kem learns the truth of his mother was actually his aunt who replace her twin sister, and after making amens with his father they later on find the real Drusilla. Afterwards Kem got hurt protecting his mother from Sying's attack, but he was too weak to help Valt in the war to come, so Mungo felt inspired to stand in for him after understanding what it means to be a real loving family. - Trika (voiced by Tara Sands) – A yellow cat from the Land of Earth. She has 3-tails and a magic third eye that sees things, and knows her way around herbs to make medicines. By Season 2, she learns a new transformation magic which gifts her with a 4th-tail. Next during the later portion in the second season, when she cast an illusion protection from her third eye to fool her foes while also growing out a 5th-tail. [5]
- Alia (voiced by Lyra Blake) – An orange fire bird from the Land of Fire. She can produce flames to surround the body and blast hot flames at targets. She also can flame-teleport to locations she knows and has been to.[5]
- Yark (voiced by Matthew Christo) – An ice-snorting yak[5] from the Land of Water. He's the biggest member of Valt's team and the strong member next to Kem, and he knows Yak-Fu. Apparently 'Hairy' maybe his first name but prefers to use use middle name Yark by others addressing him. He was raised by goat parents and has six yak siblings. Yark can use Ice Magic by firing it through the nose to freeze things. Along with blowing strong wind from the nose and apparently de-ice targets by his heated snot effort.[5]
- Valanteen (voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessy) - A girl Wonder Deer from the Land of Water. She had the Power of Water until she transfered it to Valt but it left her weaken. Then while joining Valt's group, she obtain the Power of Metal but it corrupted her to work for Drusilla until she drain her of the power she had. At the end of Season 1 she return to normal. In Season 1 she had the same grey fur color as Valt, but at the start of Season 2 it was change to brown and she has blue color eyes.[5]
- Tao (voiced by Colleen O'Shaughnessy) - A boy made out of clay who is a member of a group of ancient clay guardians. Introduced in Season 2 after a few episodes. Communicates by playing a clay flute called a Xun which can also be transform into a pole weapon for martial combat. He's also capable of blowing into the flute to fire off air materialize projectile weapons at targets. Another ability is using the ground's dirt to form solid things for defense/offense actions. Halfway through Season 2, Tao recalls who he is and something is able to speak that Valt and the others can understand.
Land Of Wood

Land Of Earth
[edit]- Nine-Colored Deer
- Granny (voiced by Misty Lee) - A tummy purple cat with multiple tails. She is Trika's Grandmother.[5]
- Uncle Carp (voiced by Mick Wingert) - An old tan brown flatfish, who is also Trika's uncle. He creates bubbles to help others travel under the lake in the middle of the Land of Earth to a secret city.
- Kala (voiced by Lyra Blake) - A pink three-tail land cat with a moon mark facing downward who was introduced in Season 2. She acts like a popular diva and the brains of her and Mitxa's group. By the end of the Dragon Boat Race, Trika helped them from falling into the water, and once the race was over they made up.
- Mitza (voiced by Lyra Blake) - A tan dark grey three-tail land cat with a moon mark facing downward who was introduced in Season 2. She follows Kella on being all about the snarky side, but she does do a lot of the task work. By the end of the Dragon Boat Race, Trika helped them from falling into the water, and once the race was over they made up.
Land Of Fire
[edit]- Firebird Elder – (voiced by ??) - The elder bird of a tribe of firebirds. He usually carries around the sun staff.[5]
- Alia's Father – (voiced by Matthew Christo) - A blue firebird who is Alia's dad.[5]
- Alia's Mother – (voiced by ??) - A pink-purple firebird who is Alia's mother.[5]
- Jing Lings – (voiced by Mick Wingert) - Little bean-like creatures.[5]
- Dragon – (voiced by Chris Swindle) - A black Chinese dragon Da-Ming took and train to be an obedient servant. But when it was reunited with it's real mother, it rebel against those that used him for evil and was free.[5]
- Mother Dragon – (voiced by Misty Lee) - A red Chinese Dragon and the mother of the black dragon who went missing but was reunited with her son.[5]
- Hilda– (voiced by ??) - A round female tan chicken bird wearing green theme dress and brown cloth boots. She's known as the Giant Of Fire who guards the Alter Of Flame. She lives in a small hunt in the Land of Fire, comes off real swell, kind, a country accent plus didn't seem as giant-like to Valt and his group. She has a magical amulet when activated, shrinks others down to size, She came off as a foe to Valt's group, but it was a test to see if they pass and they did.[5]
Mushies - Magical mushroom creature known as Mushies that are all over the Five Lands, each one is different then the next. They come from a place called Sporugan located in the Land of Fire in a underground world. They at as the eyes of the Nine Color Deer, they are silly and child-like of good nature, and possess healing magic to help those hurt and they glow in the dark in caves to light the way. But long ago they weren't always nice, the bigger and stronger ones took energy from the five lands and kept it to fight and destroy. After meeting the Nine Color Deer taught them how to share energy and be happy, which made them smaller.
- Princess Plushy (voiced by ??) - A tan color mushroom with purple mushroom hat and light purple spots, and wear a yellow crown-like piece. She's a princess who rules over the other Mushies in Sporugan.
- Mushy: A tan mushroom creature with a playful and silly side of himself for his humble and good nature, but will be serious if the situation calls for it. He was introduced as the first Mushie Valt's group encounter before meeting others in Season 2. He's a member of Strike Team Mushie.
- Smushy - A tall skinny tan mushroom with a blue mushroom hat with light blue spots and has a belt. He's got a cowboy accent and he's good with being sneaky. He can smush himself to squeeze through locks to pick them. He's a member of Strike Team Mushie.
- Gushy - A short round tan mushroom with a pink mushroom hat and glasses. She's the smart one, always seen carrying a book to read. She's a member of Strike Team Mushie.
- Pushy - A larger tan mushroom with a brown mushroom hat with yellow spots and trim lines underneath, plus the mushroom covers the eyes like a mask. He's a tough guy who's good at pushing things, and speaks with a German accent. He's a member of Strike Team Mushie.
Land Of Water
[edit]- Master Ven– (voiced by ?) - Yark's father is a brown goat with dark hair and short beard. Speech is Hippie-like.[5]
- Madame Ven– (voiced by ?) - Yark's mother is a yellow goat with white neck mane and tail. Speech is Hippie-like.[5]
- Yink– (voiced by ?) - Yark's brother with tan brown fur and purple hair plus some grown tiny beard strands on the chin area. He studied Yak-Fu & Yak Chi, and can perform a move called Thunder Roll which allows him to roll his entire body to plow against foes and break down walls.[5]
- Yonk– (voiced by ?) - Yark's brother with dark tan blue-grey fur and red hair. He studied Yak-Fu & Yak Chi, and can perform a move called Thunder Burp which releases a powerful sonic burp as a yellow wave.[5]
- York (voiced by ?)- Yark's brother with tan dark brown fur and brown hair. He studied Yak-Fu & Yak Chi, and can perform a move called Thunder Hoof which he leaps into the air to deliver a drop kick move of a strong impact to target.[5]
- Yirk (voiced by ?) Yark's sister with tan light purple fur and purple medium hair along with eyelashes. He studied Yak-Fu & Yak Chi, and can perform a move called Thunder Rain which she rams with enough speed to deal a hard headbutt impact.[5]
Snow Monkies - They are white snow monkies that live in the Land of Water.
- Ming (voiced by Ogie Banks) - A snow monkey who lives in a village called Sha Win, who is not the best archer.
- Mirka - A light blue monkey with blue short hair, wears a purple robe and a gold tiara crown with red jewelry. She is princess of the snow monkies that Valt's group meant, and who Cobalt seems to have a crush on. In Season 2 she appears to have green emerald eyes.
- Cerulean- Cobalt's older brother who appears taller, more bulky, and speaks with a highly intelligent mind to become a scientist. He left the Land of Wood to do research studies on insects. However it was shown later he was working for Sying, but only because he feared that magic would take the place of science. When Sying double cross him and worked together with Cobalt to defeat her latest monster he reforms while working as a scientist under Princess Meerkat.[5]
Land Of Metal
[edit]- Drusilla (voiced by Tara Sands) - A green taotie and Da-Ming's wife and Kem's mother. When Kem was born, her twin sister Sying knock her out, took Kem as a baby with Dark Warrior, and plan to switch places. She was sealed in Dark Warrior's secret lair until near the end of Season 2 near the finale. At first she wanted revenge, but when Kem got her she realized family was more important than her selfish desire for what Sying did to her.
- Url– (voiced by Mick Wingert) - A purple taotie who resembles Mungo but is a bit smarter. During Season 2, he took over the Land of Metal when the new ruler was away to help Valt. So Da-Ming, Mungo and Kem tried many ways to get into the castle before finally outsmarting the taotie. Since then he's tried to get back into the castle as a cleaning maid, then offer to paint a royal painting, and then became number one guard by Da-Ming. Then after failing to stop Mungo sneaking out at night when being used by Sying, he was fired.[5]
- Captain Jelly (voiced by ??) - A rogue taotie who became captain of the crew of the Golden Sunrise, living the life of a Portal Pirate stealing things from those that venture by portal transportation, rides a metallic construct ship and the rogue taoties live within the portal world. While he fights with a blade and uses portal transportation, he be an honorable pirate as he and his crew love to sing and dance. After Valt, Cobalt and Tao venture to retrieve a stolen Xun, they managed to befriend the portal pirates.
- Guai Shou/Juan (voiced by Tara Sands) - A blue female taotie with purple hair and wearing a purple dress. Her name means 'Monster' and from an old legend if one accepts a gift from her one is trap in the tunnels below the Land of Metal forever. At first she seems like a pretty attractive and kind soul, but it's a false act to hid her wicked and ugly true form and self to trick others to accept her gifts and trap them. hen her mirror was destroyed, it return Valt's powers and she was imprisoned again. But when Valt promised to help free her, it help change her wicked action and change back into her pretty and kind form. She also revealed her true name Jin which means 'Gracious', and offered to help Valt's group for real on finding the Clay Army in the land of metal.
- Fu-San Long/Fu (voiced by ??) - A dark grey Chinese dragon with black mane. A benevolent dragon known as the Finder of Treasures, but to his friends they can call him Fu. Sadly when having losing his chimu (a physical representation of his spirit), he lost his sense of direction and purpose. When Valt's group offered to help him, he offered to help them find the Clay Guardians of the Land of Metal and Kem's mother since that was a treasure dear to the young taotie's heart. However whoever holds the Chimu controls the dragon to do anything they want. Da-Ming had his Chimu and commanded him to find and attack Sying, but things didn't go so well. In the end he regain his Chimu before pointing in directions for Valt and Kem to find what they seek.
- Hulie (voiced by) - A female nine-tail fox with orange fur, white underbelly to mouth and edge of tails, plus yellow lines marks between tail and ankles, and yellow eyes. She is guardian of a treasure that Drscilla asked her to guard, and fights with a wooden staff with her middle tail. When encountering Valt's group, she learn that she was deceived by the twin sister Sying, and once they open the treasure it was things that belong to Driscilla. After that Hulie leaves to go on a jounrey.
Clay Army: Introduced in Season 2, they were made long ago to protect the Five Lands from great and powerful threats. Each army has it's own commander in the respective lands of Wood, Water, Fire, Metal and Earth. To awaken the commanders Valt and each of his friends of each land along with Tao must prove themselves to help awaken each commander who would help lead their other armies in the final battle against Sying and her dinosaur army. When the task was completed, the Guardians and their troops return to their respective lands.
- Wood Commander (voiced by ?) - A thin clay commander from the Land of Wood wearing green leaf theme armor.
- Water Commander (voiced by ?) - A roundclay commander from the Land of Water wearing blue aqua theme armor.
- Fire Commander (voiced by Ogie Banks) - A thin clay commander from the Land of Fire wearing red fire theme armor. When the group found him, he protected Valt from one of Sying's dinos but as he survived, his magical armor was scattered. Soon after finding the missing armor components, he demonstrates his abilities to summon a bow and channel flaming arrows that wiped out a dino monster in a single attack. He's seen as a friendly, lighthearted, and comical comedian type as he got along with Cobalt but when a situation is serious he will act firmly. (He's one of the few awaken commanders to introduce his name Kang)
- Metal Commander (voiced by Matthew Christo) - A round clay commander from the Land of Metal wearing grey metal theme armor.
- Earth Commander (voiced by Matthew Christo)- A thin clay commander from the Land of Earth wearing yellow sun theme armor.
Villains
[edit]- Da-Ming (voiced by Christopher Swindle) – A green taotie, and the main villain of the series in Season 1. Wields a metal scepter capable of projecting energy blast and taking the magic power of Wonder Deers. Just like Kem when he eats red berries, he too grows larger. By the end of Season 1 he's banished to a deserted island along with Mungo & Drusilla (Sying). At the start of Season 2, tries to get off the island until halfway through returns to the Five Lands apparently reformed.[5]
- Mungo (voiced by Christopher Swindle) – A purple taotie. He is Da-Ming's nephew and assistant. His large size displays he's physically strong, but not the brightest. He uses a portal device to go to and back from the Land of Metal and hunted with a capture weapon launcher that fired green slime. At the end of Season 1 was banished to a desert island along with Da-Ming & Drusilla (Sying). At the start of Season 2, he assist his uncle and aunt to get off the island until halfway through returns to the Five Lands with Da-Ming now reformed. Though Sying used his gullible brain to aid her, Mungo saw how Kem risk his life to protect his mother Drusilla from harm, and took Kem's place in the final battle to stop his evil aunt who would even stoop so low as to torture his kitties. [5]
- Sying (voiced by Beth Payne) – An evil taotie in Season 1 who was an evil queen even more terrifying then Da-Ming. In Season 2 it's revealed that her real name is Sying and she's the twin sister of the real Drusilla she switch places and imprisoned ever since Kem was born. She has learn dark magic, can grow bat-wings to fly, and wields a magic scepter. She was banish to a desert island at the end of Season 1, but during Season 2 was rescued by Dark Warrior her ally. When Dark Warrior fell, she took over the plan to raise a dinosaur army to conquer the Five Lands. In the final battle when she had her dinosaur army, she almost won until Cobalt took control of her army and even more when Valt recovered from her last attack. Valt split the ground, and Sying fell into the canyon from which she appeared to vanish upon her defeat. [5]
- Dark Warrior (voiced by Matthew Christo) – An evil samurai theme beetle warrior who wields a double-bladed pole weapon. First appeared in Season 1 as a dangerous enemy who even Da-Ming felt concern over such an adversary against Valt the Wonder Deer. He was defeated and fell into a crack hole in the floor, and believed to have perished. He returns in Season 2 as the mastermind behind the use of the Nanomites that create monster foes to attack Valt. He works closely to Sying and devoted to aid her in conquering the Five Lands. Halfway through Season 2 he's defeated and turn into a clay statue by Tao. [5]
- Sia(voiced by Lyra Blake) - A fire bird from the Land of Fire. Shown to act like a diva on being popular with a no care attitude and only cares about herself. She sees Alia as someone who never be as popular as her. She has two other gals apart of her popular group. During some later events in Season 1, she worked with Da-Ming on trying to stop Valt and his party. Then later appears in Season 2 to work alongside Dark Warrior then work for Sying. In Season 1 she has tan purple and light tan purple feather features, but by Season 2 now has yellow and green feather features. During a moment Sying was creating a new special firebird dinosaur, she used an extinct egg and Sia to turn her into a purple pterodactyl version of herself called Sia-Saurus. But after failing she apparently was reverted back into her firebird self again. After the final battle when Sying fell, she was nowhere in sight.[5]
- (voiced by ??) - A tin tan brown-grey taotie wearing a green shirt and a Chinese hat. He lives underground in the Land of Fire, and does evil experiments on the Mushies in Season 2. Wanted to turn the small Mushies into their larger, more bad but stronger monster selves so he have an army under his command. He was defeated and shrank down to be smaller than the Mushies and kept in a glass jar.
- Marcus - A male Dark Deer from the Land of Darkness and the main villain of the series in Season 4.[5]

Broadcast
[edit]The first 26 episodes of Valt the Wonder Deer were released on the streaming service Tencent Video in China on December 31, 2016, which garnered over 9 million views in its first two weeks.[2] The second half of the first season was released on February 19, 2017.
In the United Kingdom, the English dub of the series was broadcast on Propeller TV for one season around June 2017.[when?] The English dub was released onto Jetpack Distribution's YouTube channel on August 24, 2019, but it was later taken down.
The series is now streaming on Tubi and is divided into 9 one hour episodes.
Musical
[edit]On May 1, 2019, a Chinese musical for the series, Deer Elf: In Search of the Rainbow Bridge (鹿精灵之寻找彩虹桥) premiered in the Beijing China Puppet Theater.[6]
