V. M. Munuswamy (2 October 1913 – 19 February 2008) was an Indian freedom activist from Vellore, Tamil Nadu, known for his contributions to the Indian independence movement.[1]

Biography

[edit]

Munuswamy was born on 2 October 1913 in Tamil Nadu, India. In 1926, when the Indian independence movement was between non-violence and extremism, Munuswamy joined extremist faction of the movement. However, with the rise of Gandhism, he eventually left extremism faction and became a part of the nonviolent resistance movement.[1][2][3][4] Munuswamy participated actively in protests against British rule, during the Salt March, a civil disobedience movement of Indian independence. In May 1930, he was arrested and sentenced to 7 years in prison for organizing stage plays with prime focus on anti-colonial slogans. He was incarcerated in Vellore Fort Sub Jail (now Vellore Central Prison) but was released after serving 3 years following an appeal.[5]

During the Quit India Movement in 1942, Munuswamy was again arrested along with other activists such as Potti Sriramulu. He was again imprisoned for seven years at Vellore Fort Sub Jail.[5]

Munuswamy died on February 19, 2008, at the age of 94.[5]
