Unused Templates
@Gonnym, Jonesey95, and Tom (LT): if you are interested, I've created my own report... User:Zackmann08/unused templates. Right now I have to run it manually, but it contains the first 1000 templates with no transclusions. Would welcome any assistance XfDing them... Slowly but surely we can knock them down. :-) --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:51, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
- I love it. We should be able to narrow it down a bit. I don't know quarry queries, but can you exclude pages that transclude certain templates? We should exclude pages that transclude {{disambig}}, {{require subst}}, {{Template ambiguous}}, or {{subst only}}, and possibly others. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:02, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
- We should also be able to use this list to start tagging subst-only templates, so that they do not appear on the report. I'm looking at {{Afc move}} and its friends, for example. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:04, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
- I have a feeling that Template:Attached KML/Alabama State Route 13 is actually being used somehow, but I don't know how those KML things work. They should probably be excluded from your report. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:10, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Jonesey95: I just fixed the subst only stuff, check the report again? If you look at the source code you will see this snippet:

AND t2.tl_title IN ('Require_subst', 'Subst_only', 'Substed', 'Substitute','Substituted', 'Substme', 'Substonly')
- That checks for the template using any of those templates. I can easily add to those. Take a bit of time and look over the report, let me know what other narrowing criteria you would like to see and I will update the query in a bit. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:13, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
- Great idea! I was thinking of starting off my own personal quest by date :D. Do you think you could create a list that matches the above of anything created up to and including 2007 that meets the above? I feel like by working from the oldest, we can iron out flaws and also there will be less entries to evaluate so I may get a better idea of what we're dealing with. --Tom (LT) (talk) 01:59, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
- {{Attached KML|display=title,inline}} at Alabama State Route 13 uses Template:Attached KML/Alabama State Route 13. --Gonnym (talk) 09:15, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

- I just modified the query to check the category directly instead of looking at it through a wrapper template. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 04:08, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
Here are some suggestions to refine Zackmann08's query in order to focus in on the real junk that should be deleted and is likely to be uncontroversial. The goal of these refinements is to remove template-space pages from the report that are likely to be seen as "Keep because it's harmless or potentially useful." Let's not waste anyone's time or harm our reputation by nominating those. For example, a page called "Template:Foobar/sandbox2" may be unused, but (a) it should be unused and (b) it's not doing any harm, is unlikely to be placed in an article in error, and could be useful for template development. So in anticipation of those arguments, let's not have it on this report of low-hanging fruit.
- Remove all Attached KML files (on the assumption that they are actually being used somewhere) (this is already done).
- Exclude pages transcluding the following templates: {{Disambiguation}}; {{Link language/Notes}} (xxx icon templates, which will survive deletion attempts).
- Exclude templates created less than x days ago (180? 365? 730?). Let's focus on the old unused stuff first, and work our way forward.
- Exclude pages with these strings in the names, with text before and optionally after: "/sandbox.*" (to get "/sandbox2" and "/sandbox old"); "/testcases.*" (to get things like "/testcases2" and "/testcases/Archive 2")
It would be nice to end up with a "low-hanging fruit" report with a total of a few thousand templates on it. Anything more is too big to handle in a reasonable period of time. Once we get that report down to a smaller size, we can ease up on some of these criteria.
[text moved to "Groups of templates" section below.]
If you run the report again with these modified criteria, I'll take another look to see what other patterns I see. Thanks for doing this. I like a systematic approach. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:49, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
Sub
- @Gonnym, Jonesey95, Tom (LT), and Pppery: thank you all for the feedback! Lot of information here... I have added a Suggested Improvements section to User:Zackmann08/unused_templates/notes. As you come up with new tips to narrow the scope of the query, please add them in bulletpoint form there. I will strike them as I implement them in the query. That will help keep the conversation organized.
- Pppery thanks for the update to the query. Can I make a request tho? In the future, can you suggest the changes to me in the section I mentioned above? This isn't a power trip about editing my user page! The actual query is stored elsewhere, that is just a copy of the code. It just makes it easier for me to update if you suggest the changes. I do really appreciate the suggested change though and plan to implement it!
- Jonesey95 love your suggestions to slowly weed things down, particularly the part about older templates. Going to look into that now. Part of my query also filters out pages that already have a pending nomination on them, so that will help prevent duplicated efforts.

- It's my general instinct to boldly do rather than talk, but the comment of suggesting changes makes sense. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 19:55, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Jonesey95: FYI the query returns 28,545 pages in total. Unfortunately that produces too much data. Wikipedia actually won't let me create a page with that big of a table. So for now I'm limiting it to the first 5000. You can look at the full results here, they just aren't in a nice pretty table. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:42, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
- Good to know. Maybe that's why MZM's report spans multiple pages. Time to poke through the reports to look for groups of templates to either nominate or exclude from the report. I have posted a couple of talk page notes to ask about a few groups, like the ones in Category:Unnecessary taxonomy templates. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:55, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Gonnym, Jonesey95, Tom (LT), and Pppery: I am using a script to update the unused templates page (User:Zackmann08/unused_templates). Would any of you like to be pinged when that update occurs? Obviously you can simply watch the page, but if any of you would like, I can add your username to the edit summary so that when I update it you get a pinged notification. Let me know. :-) --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 19:12, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

Groups of templates to investigate
- It looks like the subtemplates of {{Authority control}} are no longer needed or used, as of five years ago, and should have been deleted long ago. They could be nominated as a batch.
- It looks like there are groups of templates, like the ones that start with Template:Bpsp and maybe some of the AfC templates, that should have {{substituted}} or a similar template added to their documentation. That will make the docs more accurate and drop the templates off of this report.
- I have asked Peter coxhead about Category:Unnecessary taxonomy templates (0).
- I posted a note at Template talk:Dts about 40+ apparently unused subpages of that template.
- About 3,000 templates on the report start with "Template:TFA_title". Are these still useful somehow? They should either be deleted or removed from the report.
- There are roughly 1,000 apparently unused "Template:S-line/" templates.
- There are over 3,000 items on the list that start with "Template:POTD". Are these still useful somehow? They should either be deleted or removed from the report.
- There are over 10,000 items on the list that start with "Template:PBB". Are these still useful somehow? They should either be deleted or removed from the report. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:10, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
- There is another editor that handles all the "Template:S-line/" templates. I'll ping him into this discussion - @Mackensen. --Gonnym (talk) 22:14, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Jonesey95: all of the Template:PBB templates were used exclusively by a now blocked bot User:ProteinBoxBot. I would say bulk nominated all of them... --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:26, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

Pinging Anomie, whose bot creates the TFA title subtemplates. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 22:42, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
- Special:PrefixIndex/Template:TFA title/ (at least the ones where a date makes up the rest of the title) are for each day's Wikipedia:Today's featured article. I don't think they should be deleted, they're probably useful as machine-readable historical record if nothing else. The ones at Special:PrefixIndex/Template:POTD/ are similar for Wikipedia:Picture of the day. I don't know whether there's use for old Special:PrefixIndex/Template:POTD protected/ (since AFAICT they only exist so Main Page cascading doesn't protect the general-use daily POTD templates), you should probably ask at WT:POTD. Anomie⚔ 23:04, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
- Unused S-line templates can happen for a lot of reasons: replacement by Module:Adjacent stations, cancellation of whatever train service they helped display, refactoring. In general they don't get cleaned up. I'm trying to address that now, though migrations to Adjacent stations. Mackensen (talk) 23:42, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
- Added a list of Unused documentation templates if anyone wants to focus on those... --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 23:33, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
- Great ideas, and particularly agree with Jonesey95 that we should start by focusing on low-hanging fruit. It may be useful as large exclusion groups appear of templates that are not low-hanging (eg the POTD, TFA templates) that they are excluded from the list. --Tom (LT) (talk) 09:42, 28 February 2019 (UTC)
- @Zackmann08 maybe we can propose a set of the doc pages (let's say 10 - 20, then 20 - 50; then doc pages last edited in 2007, 2008 - 10 or something) as trial runs to see what other editors think. A doc page is here to serve the encyclopedia, I really can't see what the purpose is if it's not used. --Tom (LT) (talk) 09:42, 28 February 2019 (UTC)
- Regarding doc pages, any doc page of a redirect is a valid deletion (and in my opinion falls under WP:G8, but another editor disagrees), but redirects of actual templates should probably be reconnected. --Gonnym (talk) 10:42, 28 February 2019 (UTC)
- I found a few doc pages that were once used, but have been superseded by doc pages that are shared among multiple templates. Those could probably be redirected to the shared doc page without harm, but I would need to think through all of the possible side effects (some of which would be positive). – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:28, 28 February 2019 (UTC)
- I didn't mean those. Those can be deleted. I meant /docs of templates which use the template itself for docs/cats. If those are already created, then connecting them in my opinion is better (and then moving all docs and cats to them). --Gonnym (talk) 13:49, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

@Gonnym, Jonesey95, Tom (LT), and Pppery: can I encourage you all to get WP:DISCORD setup? It would be great to have a group chat going to coordinate this effort. Obviously not a requirement, we can certainly continue talking here, but if you're willing to give it a shot, would make it easier to chat in real time. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:48, 28 February 2019 (UTC)

- For reasons I explained at WT:TfD would prefer if possible to continue discussions on Wiki. I don't see a great need to change the venue based on our productive discussions going on here. On the other hand, happy that other editors are thinking about ways to improve elsewhere as well. Will participate actively on the Wiki :). --Tom (LT) (talk) 06:13, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

More Templates
@Gonnym, Jonesey95, Tom (LT), and Pppery: So there are 1,349 unused {{Userbox}} templates (at least that were created before Jan 1, 2018. see this query. Thoughts on nominating those? --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 19:40, 1 March 2019 (UTC)
- Two notes - the first is that userboxes go to WP:MFD and second, if a userbox is part of a series of levels (1-5) then if any of the userboxes of that series is used, then I think probably all should be kept so the series is complete. --Gonnym (talk) 20:08, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

Twinkle TFD breaks tables
Hi Zackmann08, when you TFD nominate a table beginning with {|, could you add a newline? Without a newline the template looks broken. There is no super easy fix for this in Twinkle, so you should try to check whether your TFD nominations unintentionally create garbage. See Wikipedia_talk:Twinkle#Twinkle_TFDs_breaking_tables. —Kusma (t·c) 16:43, 7 March 2019 (UTC)

- @Hhkohh:
Before listing a review request please consider attempting to discuss the matter with the closer as this could resolve the matter more quickly. There could have been a mistake, miscommunication, or misunderstanding, and a full review may not be needed. Such discussion also gives the closer the opportunity to clarify the reasoning behind a decision.

Hungarian official websites
Using {{URL|{{#property:P856}} }} as in this diff creates issues when official website (P856) is not set. {{wikidata|property|P856}} should work better.--eh bien mon prince (talk) 20:11, 11 March 2019 (UTC)

@Gonnym, Jonesey95, Tom (LT), and Pppery: just an update, the User:Zackmann08/unused templates work continues. PLease don't speedy pages I created. It makes a ton of work, usually for nothing. All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 12:39, 10 March 2019 (UTC).
- @Rich Farmbrough: what page are you referring to? I'm not going to check whether YOU created the page before speedying a page. If it needs to be CSDed then it will be... --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:57, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
- You leave me a template. (See WP:DTTR.) If you want to delete something I made, just leave me a message. A good third of the time I'll g7 it myself, and that won't waste other people's time researching it and having a discussion. ANother third of the time, I'll probably be able to state rock solid reason to keep. The last third may need to go to a discussion.
- If you are deleting so much you can't check the creator I think you are deleting too much. I'm not sure that there is much, if any, benefit to the huge number of things you have been nominating for deletion recently. Find something that actually improves the encyclopedia, rather than "cleaning up" toolboxes of items that haven't been used for a while.
- All the best: Rich Farmbrough, 22:43, 11 March 2019 (UTC).

Concern on a hopefully fully qualifying place, just for you
Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2019 March 4#Template:Infobox Hungarian settlement
What do you call by result? There was no obvious “delete” opinion after my “keep”. A possible solution was raised, but not implemented. You mass-substituted the template without caring to remove codes that should hardly, if ever, be placed in articles, like #ifexist
(for example here). So please revert the mess you’ve created ASAP. (By the way, WP:NACD says non-admins may not close discussions as “delete”, so you should not have closed this discussion in the first place.) —Tacsipacsi (talk) 22:15, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Tacsipacsi: Not going to be lectured to by someone with less than 600 edits who clearly doesn't know what they are talking about. You proposed a solution to something that wasn't actually a problem and didn't even make sense. The WP:!VOTE was OVERWHELMINGLY to
keepdelete (typo). If you want to challenge the closure, then you go right ahead but the pages are already converted and working just fine. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:35, 11 March 2019 (UTC)- I’ll try not to answer to your ad hominem arguments. Let’s get back to the facts: I do know what I am talking about. - Zackmann08, leaving aside the drama, you definitely left ifexist statements in an article with this edit, and probably others. That should not have happened, I don't think, and needs to be fixed. We generally do not use if statements in articles. – Jonesey95 (talk) 05:56, 12 March 2019 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.17
Hello Zackmann08,
- News
- The WMF has announced that Google Translate is now available for translating articles through the content translation tool. This may result in an increase in machine translated articles in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to use the {{rough translation}} tag and gently remind (or inform) editors that translations from other language Wikipedia pages still require attributio per WP:TFOLWP.
- Discussions of interest
- Two elements of CSD G6 have been split into their own criteria: R4 for redirects in the "File:" namespace with the same name as a file or redirect at Wikimedia Commons (Discussion), and G14 for disambiguation pages which disambiguate zero pages, or have "(disambiguation)" in the title but disambiguate a single page (Discussion).
- {{db-blankdraft}} was merged into G13 (Discussion)
- A discussion recently closed with no consensus on whether to create a subject-specific notability guideline for theatrical plays.
- There is an ongoing discussion on a proposal to create subject-specific notability guidelines for chemicals and organism taxa.
- Reminders
- NPR is not a binary keep / delete process. In many cases a redirect may be appropriate. The deletion policy and its associated guideline clearly emphasise that not all unsuitable articles must be deleted. Redirects are not contentious. See a classic example of the templates to use. More templates are listed at the R template index. Reviewers who are not aware, do please take this into consideration before PROD, CSD, and especially AfD because not even all admins are aware of such policies, and many NAC do not have a full knowledge of them.
- NPP Tools Report
- Superlinks – allows you to check an article's history, logs, talk page, NPP flowchart (on unpatrolled pages) and more without navigating away from the article itself.
- copyvio-check – automatically checks the copyvio percentage of new pages in the background and displays this info with a link to the report in the 'info' panel of the Page curation toolbar.
- The NPP flowchart now has clickable hyperlinks.

I really don't know if I'm for or against the removal of the Final Ball template. But, anyway, your tireless job removing it, has been outstanding. For doing, alone, such amount of work, you deserve praise and some kind of recognition. You surely deserve this barnstar. SirEdimon (talk) 04:21, 9 March 2019 (UTC) |

Help with TfD result replacement
Could you help me with some template replacements? Per Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2019 March 1#Template:Infobox television season/custom, The Big Break and The Apprentice (franchise) shows should be converted to Template:Infobox reality competition season, while America's Next Top Model, Food Network Star, Project Runway, Shear Genius and Top Chef to Template:Infobox reality talent competition. There is no need to add any new parameters or use a custom one. Whatever isn't available in the infobox is meant to be removed ({{Infobox reality talent competition}} uses some different names, such as |competitors=
instead of |num_contestants=
). --Gonnym (talk) 07:43, 9 March 2019 (UTC)

Austria population stats
As a replacement for the deleted {{Metadata population AT-1}} (etc.) templates, I am currently uploading the updated 2018 population figures for Austrian municipalities to Wikidata. I also created {{Austria population Wikidata}}, both for ease of transclusion and to explain the process to other editors. But with {{Infobox Town AT}} gone, I have no quick way to implement those changes to all the Austria articles. Surely there has to be a better way than manually changing every single page? I don't have a bot account, so that's not an option for me. Thanks, --eh bien mon prince (talk) 12:59, 9 March 2019 (UTC)
- Underlying lk, I would recommend using WP:AWB. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 19:22, 9 March 2019 (UTC)
- Should probably have this discussion at {{Infobox settlement}}, but I think it's possible to create a switch that if country is set to "Austria" (or other countries that will use this style of template) then get the population data from Wikidata. That way you don't need to update every single page. But again, have this discussion on the template page.--Gonnym (talk) 13:15, 10 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi again, I fixed more of these myself but then one got reverted see here. I thought WikiData was supposed to be able to be used automatically so it would not seem valid to have place holder entries, but I also have no idea what the "Distributed Game" game is. I've left them a message here explaining why I removed it, but thought I'd let you know as it seams we either cant have WikiData having such non valid entries or we cant use automatically in templates (or the {{#property:P..}} would need updating to recognise agreed non values). I thought I would let you know as you have more experience in this area and may have input. Cheers KylieTastic (talk) 17:57, 14 March 2019 (UTC)

- @Jonesey95 and KylieTastic:, sadly this is going to be another one of those battles I just don't care enough about to fight. Template:Automatic taxobox/doc/new
What made you think that {{Automatic taxobox/doc/new}} is either unused or a duplicate? It is linked from {{Autotaxobox system nav}} which appears on every one of the documentation pages for the automated taxobox system. Peter coxhead (talk) 23:11, 14 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Peter coxhead: this shows that it has zero transclusions... --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 15:44, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- Try it without "&hidelinks=1": [1] – you were hiding all the links. Peter coxhead (talk) 15:50, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Peter coxhead: yes I'm aware of that... Templates are meant to be transcluded, not linked to. If the template isn't transcluded anywhere then it is unused. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 15:52, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- Of course it's not unused. Documentation pages for templates are put in template space, at Template:TEMPLATE-NAME/doc; they will then normally have one and only one transclusion – by the template itself. If the documentation is very long, as it needs to be for the automated taxobox system and its parts, then it may need to be divided up among subpages, reached in this case by a nav template transcluded in multiple /doc pages. Now if you want to say that subpages of a template /doc page should be moved out of template namespace, that's a different issue. But you can't say that such a page should be deleted because it's unused, because it's clearly not. If it were deleted, the link in the nav template would simply go nowhere, which would obviously be wrong. Peter coxhead (talk) 16:04, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
Peter coxhead, discuss it at the TFD. Thanks.Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 16:07, 15 March 2019 (UTC)- Peter coxhead scratch that. it was a CSD. Ok, well you contested it so nothing more needed. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 16:09, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- Ok, but there is a sensible question, namely where subpages of /doc pages should go, if they aren't transcluded but linked. In this case, there is a sensible answer, because I moved other documentation subpages (ones I worked on more) into WP: namespace, so I can do the same here. Peter coxhead (talk) 16:13, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- Peter coxhead, that works for me! Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 16:21, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- So I moved it; Template:Automatic_taxobox/doc/new is now a redirect. It does have links, but these are (as far as I know) only through the nav template, and will disappear as the database slowly updates. (If there are any other links, these can be updated.) Then it can be deleted. Peter coxhead (talk) 16:24, 15 March 2019 (UTC)

By the way, there are some other examples of documentation pages in your list at User:Zackmann08/unused doc templates with titles like "Template:TEMPLATE-NAME/doc/SUB" that are not transcluded but do appear to be genuine documentation subpages, linked from the main documentation page e.g. Template:Class mask/doc/custom, Template:Infobox road/doc/tech, Template:Coord/doc/internals.
However, Template:Automatic taxobox/doc/children, Template:Automatic taxobox/doc/discuss, Template:Automatic taxobox/doc/errors and Template:Automatic taxobox/doc/experiment are neither transcluded nor linked. It would be good to have them deleted. Peter coxhead (talk) 16:59, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
- Peter coxhead, I'm very slowly making my way through the multiple lists of unused templates. If there are ones that you think can/should be deleted, please by all means CSD! Those lists are for everyone to use, not just me. You help is greatly appreciated. :-) Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 17:00, 15 March 2019 (UTC)
Football tables TFD
I think you should really try to improve your TFD nominations, or stop making them. Today, you have nominated a bunch of templates that were used until a few days ago (and you know that, as you have recently essentially emptied the "unused templates" list). Would it be so difficult to state in the nomination that the data was copied into the articles very recently and whether you believe that was done with or without violating the copyright of the template's contributors? I find the amount of work that goes into your nominations seriously disappointing from an editor who thinks they are highly experienced with templates (see your response above). It is not important to nominate unused templates for deletion before the WP:DEADLINE, it is more important to get things right. —Kusma (t·c) 21:12, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
- Kusma, I'm not following all of your points... I want to hear what you have to say and not debate minor things but a couple of points...
- In the case above, the editor was just plain wrong in about 5 different ways. To be accusing me of not knowing what I'm doing when they were 100% wrong is just ridicuslous. I don't always use that argument, but when an editor with no clue what they are talking about accuses me of acting in bad faith, I do think my edit history is a leg to stand on.
- Now regarding the sports tables... Can you give me an example? NOT trying to be difficult, but as you yourself have pointed out, there are a LOT of TFDs so I want to make sure we are talking about the same thing. I am working from a report of unused templates. Whether the templates became unused yesterday or 10 years ago isn't really relevant (IMHO). If it is unused, then why does it need to be a template?
- As for
violating the copyright of the template's contributors
I honestly don't know what that means? Wikipedia is open for anyone to edit... No one owns a copyright on any of the information... - Again I respect your insight, especially as an admin. I have made a number of mistakes with TFDs including closing/relisting discussion I was involved in. This in particular is something I am SUPER careful about now. I don't claim to be perfect but I am trying my best. I appreciate the spirit in which you left this message. Help me understand your concerns a bit better so I can learn from your feedback. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:20, 13 March 2019 (UTC)

, see Wikipedia:Merge and delete. {{3x|p}}ery (talk) 01:23, 14 March 2019 (UTC)- When Frietjes replaces the templates on the page she gives the correct credit which solves any copyright issue as it outlined here. --Gonnym (talk) 07:42, 14 March 2019 (UTC)
- Gonnym, yea I'm still not sure what @Kusma: was referring to here... ---Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 16:07, 14 March 2019 (UTC)
- Indeed I was talking about 2017–18 Championnat National 3. I haven't been accusing you of acting in bad faith, just of being a bit fast and incomplete in your nominations. I find it important information that the content was recently merged by Frietjes with correct attribution. Why can't you say that in your TFD? (I assume you have checked that; an experienced editor would not nominate a template for deletion without checking this). The general point is: if you make many TFD nominations, make better TFD nominations. Currently you are the most active TFD nominator, and I would like you to set a better example to other TFD nominators. Your nomination of Template:Telford and Wrekin, for example, looks like you are not doing your homework. —Kusma (t·c) 20:00, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
- Kusma, thanks for the reply. I want to be clear that I appreciate the feedback. I KNOW I can do better, and want to improve. With regards to Template:Telford and Wrekin, I'm not sure what you mean by not doing my homework... The template is not used... What homework is it that you think I should be doing? Again, since tone is hard to read, I'm not trying to be confrontational. I genuinely want to understand. You commented on that TFD with a diff showing that it was removed from the parent article in 2011. It seems WAY overkill to me that I would have to search the history of every page that template was linked to in order to see if it was removed. Whats more, it was removed in 2011... 8 years ago. Why is that even relevant? At the end of the day the template is not used.
- Now if I removed it from the parent page and then immediately TFDed the template with no explanation of why I had removed it, that would definitely be bad. I guess I don't get what the point is of pointing out that 8 years ago the template was on the page in question. At the moment, none of the 20+ pages that are linked to in the navbox transclude said navbox (WP:BIDIRECTIONAL).
- Thanks again for helping me learn. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:34, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
- Your TFD nom said "unused navbox with no parent article". It took me less than three seconds to find the parent article, unsurprisingly titled Telford and Wrekin. —Kusma (t·c) 09:55, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
- Kusma, ok... you kind of ignored most of what I said... Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:34, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
- I thought you wanted to know what was wrong about your nomination. In case I wasn't clear: You should not write "unused navbox with no parent article" for unused navboxes that have a parent article. —Kusma (t·c) 19:01, 17 March 2019 (UTC)
- Kusma, Ok. In my opinion a parent article would be an article about he different boroughs of Telford and Wrekin but I concede that is sort of splitting hairs. I will be more thorough in the future. For what it is worth, please know I am attempting to learn so thanks for the feedback. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 19:06, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

- Dthomsen8, You've made over 377,000 edits and you don't know how TFD works? On top of List of rivers of Tajikistan there is a pretty clear link... Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 20:05, 20 March 2019 (UTC)
Thanks
You were too quick for me to answer on the discussion page. Thanks for your fast response, and for taking me (making me) up on my offer to place the template. Will do that later or over the next day. Good to meet you through this, I don't know if we've communicated before. Randy Kryn (talk) 18:21, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

- Will do, and the same to you. Randy Kryn (talk) 18:37, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
Re: March 2019
The booklet used in one of the citations that triggered the COPYVIO warning was sourced from American Radio History, which published it on its site on fair use grounds. I would have used a single page, but I'm not sure the method of page clipping applies to files classified under the "Station Promotional Magazines" section of the site. TVTonightOKC 18:29, 20 March 2019 (UTC)
- Doing some investigating, it appears that the copyright issue may be the result of a false trigger. The website cited in the Copyvio detector as being in violation of copyright actually copied text from a previous version of the WGN-TV article. TVTonightOKC 18:35, 20 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Tvtonightokc: that may well be, but I need someone with COPVIO experience to review it. Also, is there a reason that your signature does not contain a link to your userpage/talk page? This is a violation of WP:CUSTOMSIG... --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:42, 20 March 2019 (UTC)
- It doesn't? I thought the link was only visible to other users, not the person using posting their signature on the comments. Edit: I just looked at my preferences, I had it set to be treated as wiki markup.. TVTonightOKC (talk) 18:50, 20 March 2019 (UTC)
- Tvtonightokc, haha!! All good my friend. Lets give the COPYVIO a day for someone to look at. If no admin looks at it by tomorrow, please ping me and I will make something happen. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:51, 20 March 2019 (UTC)
- Gotcha. I plan to revise the article draft text (further) over the weekend, including attempting to complete the news operation section, which will provide more info on the early decades of WGN-TV's news department as well as tweaks to other sections. I have removed the PDF file that triggered the COPYVIO issue from the text draft, which I have saved on my USB drive (a method done for functionality, to avoid edit conflicts while editing text IRT and to modify any changes I make to articles I work on when I'm away from home or to avoid linking to redirects). TVTonightOKC (talk) 18:59, 20 March 2019 (UTC)
- I'm taking you up on your suggestion. The article appears to still be stuck in limbo, and I have had to post a temporary subpage draft of the expanded article here (sans the PDF file that triggered the copyright violation review, but found different source material that could be used as refs for the accordant section). Again, I'll have to work on it further and try to condense some paragraphs (I'm not even sure if I'll keep the "Lottery" section, which I based on the layout of sections concerning the Massachusetts Lottery television rights in the WBZ-TV, WHDH and WCVB-TV articles, or style it similarly to the paragraph on the pre-copyedit version). Unused templates
@DePiep: 2 things... First, when you have a moment can you take a glance at User:Zackmann08/unused navbox templates and see if any of the templates starting with "Periodic Table..." can be TFDed? {{Periodic table (actinides in the periodic table)}}, {{Periodic table (d-block)}}, etc. Note that the ones listed there are UNUSED. Only even considering deleting stuff that has 0 transclusions. Second, been a few months, you ok with a mutual lifting of our WP:NOBANs? I'd love to just move on. You're the expert with a lot of the chemical stuff and would be nice to be able to post a message like this one on your talk page when necessary. --Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 18:09, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- Sure, good aim. However, it's a big task, pls allow me some time. (Don't know yet how I will handle this). -DePiep (talk) 21:14, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- DePiep, no rush at all. Let me know if you have any questions. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 21:15, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
@Barefact: First, thank you for notification. Secondly, I see blank templates as a help in building a new material, a place holder for future use. It brings uniformity to whoever starts or contributes to its contents. I believe that that was the initial idea, prompted by problems of inconsistent methods and results. They are a look forward, not a problem at hand. And they do work, as they are gradually filled in and numerously revised. They also serve as a stand-by incentive to create and maintain them. As for the line of the Hunnic Chanyus, they were one of the most consequential leaders of the Eurasian history, definers of the fate of many peoples and states, including China, Turkic states, future Russia, and in the long run the Europe, British Empire and USA. Template would serve as a focus point for the whole line. Please keep.Barefact (talk) 22:52, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

1948 villages
Hi,
There has been long discussions about the colour of this templates before, and it was decided that they should be green, (matching the bottom template.), Huldra (talk) 22:23, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- Huldra, which template are you talking about? Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:23, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- The one you just changed on, say Al-Jammasin al-Gharbi and similar 1948 villages, Huldra (talk) 22:25, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
Also, you seem to be messing up the area function somehow. Number 57 22:25, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- Yepp, look at Al-Hamma, Tiberias, Huldra (talk) 22:26, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- Huldra, I'm making a lot of changes my friend... It would help if you linked directly to the template. You have linked to a page. AS for the color, per this TFD the infobox that was being used is being deleted and we are using {{Infobox settlement}} instead.
- Number 57, can you give me an example? I'm not seeing any issues... You are likely correct but if you can point me to an example it would help me find the problem... Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:27, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- Yeah, and in the discussion on that deletion people assured me it would look exactly the same. That now turns out to be a big LIE. I will reopen that discussion, so in the mean time please don't change more of the 1948 villages templates, thank you, Huldra (talk) 22:30, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- Huldra, uh.... no? Not how that works bud. And nothing about this was a lie... wow. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:33, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- As I said: there have been loooong discussion about the colour of these templates for years, until we have finally settled on green. (As virtually everything in the I/P area is contested..) When it was discussed about deleting the old "Infobox former Arab villages in Palestine" everyone assured us that the new would look exactly the same. It doesn't: a major change (namely the colour) has been introduced in a backhanded manor, Huldra (talk) 22:38, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- Huldra, Your logic is so irrational and FULL of ZERO WP:AGF that I'm not really interested in corresponding. The entire TFD never once mentions things looking the same. In fact it says the opposite, that it will be standardized to look like every other settlement infobox. If you want to challenge the closure of the TFD, knock yourself out, but spare me your

I have. I will request undoing the deletion of the old template, if the colour cannot be changed, Huldra (talk) 22:48, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
- Huldra, I have to agree with Zackmann here. The green colour isn't needed and certainly isn't standard for place infoboxes. Don't waste your time on this. Number 57 22:50, 21 March 2019 (UTC)

for reporting the abusive behaviour of the anonymous Tfd-er. He/she is likely the same IP as in this discussion, that was pretty much beyond appropriate behaviour as well (hoax). Markussep Talk 22:08, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
- Markussep, yup! I agree. I linked to some of the IPs used in that discussion. Worth noting you and I have opposite opinions on that TFD. I actually support merging 90% of the ones they nominated. What I don't support is the way they are doing it. We can certainly agree on that... Would be great if you could add some info to the ANI. Standby for a longer response on the current TFD. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:10, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
- @Markussep: see my response on Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2019_March_22#Template:Infobox_settlement_(Albanian). Then I have a thought... How would you like to work together on writing up a doc about when to use wrappers for {{Infobox settlement}}. You make some good points and I think we could come to some good compromises that would add value to the documentation. I'm sure you agree we don't need 58 wrappers for each of the county's in California... But I also concede that {{Infobox German location}} is a good one. Here's my thought... What if we get a group of 5-10 people on board and try to write up a best practice of when to use them and when not to. I actually think this helps both of our goals. If someone like this IP comes along and bulk nominates a bunch we can go
uh no.... Per best practice documented here this is just fine
. But also if someone creates a custom wrapper for their county, we can gouh no.... Per best practice documented here this is a no no
. - Once we have that document in place, we can then go through all the wrappers once and basically speedily keep those that meet the criteria (not exactly sure how best to do that but we will figure out the specifics later). Basically the end result would be we remove the ones that we all agree aren't helpful, and keep the ones that are. In keeping those ones we also ensure that any subsequent attempts to delete them must at least note the fact that they have previously been reviewed and determined to meet the criteria for inclusion. Thoughts???? Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 22:20, 22 March 2019 (UTC)

- Sorry, but this Tfd business is already taking far too much of my time and energy, that I could have spent on actually improving things. It's not like there are hundreds of wrapper templates taking up precious server space. If they're not used, or obvious duplicates of other templates, yes they can go, but otherwise I think I'm a lot more inclusionist than you. I have already written my arguments for wrappers in the recent Tfd discussions, and frankly, I haven't seen strong arguments against them. But sure, it would be nice if there were a guideline saying: wrappers are OK, as long as they save editors time. Markussep Talk 22:39, 22 March 2019 (UTC)
DISCORD
Hello Zachmann:
Thanks for your note (here), though I'm not clear why I was invited; I wouldn't say I'm 'fairly active in this area' (in fact, I've only just got round to replying after more than three weeks from posting!) and I don't really understand about DISCORD. Are you sure you have the right Moonraker? (there's more than one of us, and we're only distantly related!). Regards, Moonraker12 (talk) 04:02, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
Heads up
You are getting under the skin of several editors with your attitude regarding deletions, please remember to treat the people behind the responses as people. I get that deletion discussions can get heated when people oppose your nomination. Step back and maybe take a break? - Knowledgekid87 (talk) 14:06, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
- Knowledgekid87, I have gone the extra step to always be respectful. Would you care to back this up with diffs? Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 16:03, 25 March 2019 (UTC)

HK constituency templates
Despite being deleted at TfD three of the four have just been recreated (e.g. {{Hong Kong Legislative Council constituencies 2004–2012}}), so you may want to do something about it. Personally I think the templates are pointless and could be merged to a single template covering both extant and defunct constituencies. Cheers, Number 57 21:51, 1 April 2019 (UTC)

Template:Infobox Town AT
I wanted to ask you about the Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2019_February_17#Template:Infobox_Town_AT discussion that you initiated a few months ago. I don't have a problem with the result itself, but there's a significant issue with the way in which it was implemented that I'm not sure how to resolve.
The problem is that the template was violating WP:TEMPLATECAT, by taking entry fields from the infobox to artificially generate and transclude geographic categories for "[Type of populated place] in [Austrian state]" in lieu of those categories actually being directly declared on the articles themselves. But the replacement process did not properly account for this, and thus pulled a significant number of the affected articles out of the Category:Populated places in Austria tree. I've caught well over 600 articles about populated places in Austria that got left completely uncategorized by the infobox replacement, and have had to be added to the uncategorized articles queue — and I have no way to even guess at how many other articles might have been pulled out of the Populated places in Austria tree and just haven't been detected as such because they still had other categories on them. I also have no way to even guess at what categories the pages might have been in before the replacement, since they were autogenerated by a deleted template and thus don't show up in the edit histories, so I also have no way to either restore the old category or figure out if some categories have been completely deleted because they got emptied out by all of this.
Again, I don't have any issue with the template replacement itself — but the process of replacement should have noticed and accounted for this issue at the time, because none of the rest of this ever should have happened at all. The replacement should never have left a single article decategorized, let alone 600 of them, and I'm struggling to identify how to fix it. It's possible that it may actually require at least a temporary restoration of the deleted template, so that we can check the edit histories of the affected articles to determine which categories disappeared from pages in the process, but I obviously don't want to do that arbitrarily. I'm going to have to post a question to Wikipedia:Village pump (technical) to request input on what the next step should be. Bearcat (talk) 14:11, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
- @Bearcat: you can find all Austrian places using the infobox with this search: hastemplate:"Infobox settlement" insource:/subdivision_name[ ]*=[ ]*\[\[Austria\]\]/. There might be also a way to lower the amount of results to those not appearing in a category, but I don't know how. --Gonnym (talk) 15:17, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
- Also, a simple fast solution to this problem would be to add all Austrian pages to a maintenance category via the template. --Gonnym (talk) 15:22, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.18
Hello Zackmann08,
- WMF at work on NPP Improvements
Niharika Kohli, a product manager for the growth team, announced that work is underway in implementing improvements to New Page Patrol as part of the 2019 Community Wishlist and suggests all who are interested watch the project page on meta. Two requested improvements have already been completed. These are:
- Allow filtering by no citations in page curation
- Not having CSD and PRODs automatically marked as reviewed, reflecting current consensus among reviewers and current Twinkle functionality.
- Reliable Sources for NPP
Rosguill has been compiling a list of reliable sources across countries and industries that can be used by new page patrollers to help judge whether an article topic is notable or not. At this point further discussion is needed about if and how this list should be used. Please consider joining the discussion about how this potentially valuable resource should be developed and used.
- Backlog drive coming soon
Look for information on the an upcoming backlog drive in our next newsletter. If you'd like to help plan this drive, join in the discussion on the New Page Patrol talk page.

New Page Review newsletter July-August 2019
Hello Zackmann08,
- WMF at work on NPP Improvements
More new features are being added to the feed, including the important red alert for previously deleted pages. This will only work if it is selected in your filters. Best is to 'select all'. Do take a moment to check out all the new features if you have not already done so. If anything is not working as it should, please let us know at NPR. There is now also a live queue of AfC submissions in the New Pages Feed. Feel free to review AfCs, but bear in mind that NPP is an official process and policy and is more important.
- QUALITY of REVIEWING
Articles are still not always being checked thoroughly enough. If you are not sure what to do, leave the article for a more experienced reviewer. Please be on the alert for any incongruities in patrolling and help your colleagues where possible; report patrollers and autopatrolled article creators who are ostensibly undeclared paid editors. The displayed ORES alerts offer a greater 'at-a-glance' overview, but the new challenges in detecting unwanted new content and sub-standard reviewing do not necessarily make patrolling any easier, nevertheless the work may have a renewed interest factor of a different kind. A vibrant community of reviewers is always ready to help at NPR.
- Backlog
The backlog is still far too high at between 7,000 and 8,000. Of around 700 user rights holders, 80% of the reviewing is being done by just TWO users. In the light of more and more subtle advertising and undeclared paid editing, New Page Reviewing is becoming more critical than ever.
- Move to draft
NPR is triage, it is not a clean up clinic. This move feature is not limited to bios so you may have to slightly re-edit the text in the template before you save the move. Anything that is not fit for mainspace but which might have some promise can be draftified - particularly very poor English and machine and other low quality translations.
- Notifying users
Remember to use the message feature if you are just tagging an article for maintenance rather than deletion. Otherwise articles are likely to remain perma-tagged. Many creators are SPA and have no intention of returning to Wikipedia. Use the feature too for leaving a friendly note note for the author of a first article you found well made or interesting. Many have told us they find such comments particularly welcoming and encouraging.
- PERM
Admins are now taking advantage of the new time-limited user rights feature. If you have recently been accorded NPR, do check your user rights to see if this affects you. Depending on your user account preferences, you may receive automated notifications of your rights changes. Requests for permissions are not mini-RfAs. Helpful comments are welcome if absolutely necessary, but the bot does a lot of the work and the final decision is reserved for admins who do thorough research anyway.
- Other news
School and academic holidays will begin soon in various places around the Western world. Be on the lookout for the usual increase in hoax, attack, and other junk pages.
Our next newsletter might be announcing details of a possible election for co-ordinators of NPR. If you think you have what it takes to micro manage NPR, take a look at New Page Review Coordinators - it's a job that requires a lot of time and dedication.
