Null interwiki links

Co-Freemasonry and Le Droit Humain

Your bot keeps adding interwiki links on the Co-Freemasonry article which I or other editors keep removing because they are clearly translating "Le Droit Humain". "Co-Freemasonry" and "Le Droit Humain" are not the same thing, just as "Freemasonry" and "The United Grand Lodge of England" are not the same thing. Please remove references to Co-Freemasonry from your bot's task list and in future, if you want to edit the Co-Freemasonry page, do it by hand, being sure to check for any discussion on the talk page if one of your edits is reverted. The bot only adds missing links, it does not guess. If some page in some site has a mistake, that mistake will be eventually copied to all pages. Please see FAQ above on how to deal with this kinds of problems. --Yurik 14:38, 4 April 2006 (UTC)

Your bot thinks Shango is Chango. But in Spanish America, Shango is Changó. So, it's absolutely a problem with the robot. There's nothing I can do because both of the articles in question are correctly named and there are no redirects from Changó to "Shango" in either Wiki.--Primetime 02:27, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

It's not about the spelling. Bot simply follows all the links from english to other languages (see explanation above), and from those languages to yet more languages. If some language somewhere refers to the incorrect article in Spanish, it will be linked to from english. You need to find all the improper links from all languages, not just english, and delete or redirect them. --Yurik 03:53, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Bot detecting/hiding vandalism

Hi Yurik, I have found that many almost every time an interwiki bot (normally yours as it is the most active) adds many interlinks in one go, it is actually covering up old vandalism, e.g. here, this isnt very surprising as it is unlikely that there are ever any articles that can be interlinked to many other wikis in one go from the english wiki, as the english wiki is already linked pretty well.

If you look at your bot's contribs, you will see that this is the case for virtually every time it adds many interwiki links in one go. What I suggest is that rather than ever adding more than 5 interwiki links in one go, you just flag the article somehow, and then revert the vandalism properly. thanks Martin 13:55, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

I am just not sure how to mark such articles - we were thinking of implementing the detection of who/when last changed the page, and if it was a recent ip edit, postpone the editing until later. Correct Update?

Just noticed that YurikBot (talk · contribs) has made an automated update at Asian Football Confederation, as seen here. It has changed the indonesian version from "Konfederasi Sepak bola Asia" to "Asian Football Confederation". I'm not sure how those language options work, mainly because I only need english, but would it not be correct to keep it how it was, in proper indonesian language? The former text was indeed proper indonesian in structure and everything. For now I've left it as it is, but should it not be reverted back to indonesian? The update is correct - id: wiki article was moved from id:Konfederasi Sepak bola Asia to id:Asian Football Confederation, and bot reflected that in the english en:Asian Football Confederation. Bangor (Wales)

Bots can only do simple rote tasks, not intelligent tasks like understand the content of a link. It's likely the problem is covered in the FAQ above; one of other sites that cover Bangor (Wales) has interwiki links to Bangor Brittany, that should be deleted to fix the problem.--Prosfilaes 08:47, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

Bot interwiki sorting

Hi, I've read your message at the top about the proposed interwiki sorting feature, but assuming one isn't made, is it possible to stop the bot from auto-ordering links? The reason I'm saying this is that the native language ordering (as YurikBot does it) does not have the support of all Wikipedians, and it's often disruptive for editors. I don't think that the language code ordering should be used by default either (as 53 vs. 49 isn't a clear concensus), but IMO you should let the editors of the articles decide how they want to order, considering there isn't a clear policy.

I agree that the sort order we have now is not optimal. Furthemore, i think every site (and possibly every user) should decide for themselves what order the links should be in (see the at the top of the page). Nevertheless, we do need an order in which the bot will add links, otherwise it might be random. At this point, you can give us an order in which to have the links for he: (must be agreed on by the he: community), and the bot framework will be updated. --Yurik 22:55, 13 April 2006 (UTC)

Eigenvalue, eigenvector and eigenspace

Your bot just put a interwiki link ca:Template:Caixa desplegable in article pt:Valor próprio which is wrong. I guess this comes from the english article Eigenvalue, eigenvector and eigenspace. Can your bot delete this link from all languages?

Bots and two-letter abbreviations

Hi! Some interwiki bots, including YurikBot, have been adding links from no:ER to en:erbium, nn:erbium etc, and subsequently links have been made from erbium back to ER. See for example the histories of no:ER and nn:erbium. So far I've only seen it for erbium/ER, but I don't have all the two-letter abbreviations on my watchlist, and I believe it's a more general problem. How can this be solved? Three Kingdoms of Korea

Hello. I have had to change [[nap:Tre Regni d''a Corea]] to [[nap:Tre Regni d<nowiki >''</ nowiki>a Corea]] (spaces added, I could not nest the nowiki tags) so MediaWiki does not interpret the two apostrophes as the italics marker. However, your bot changes this back to the old version, which messes up the link because MediaWiki thinks the two apostrophes mean italics (they are just part of the word "d''a"). Can you fix this? The Yu-Gi-Oh! issue

Doesn't look too serious, hu? Yurikbot made an interwiki between an en: and a fr: page. See the diff. I had reverted it the first time (yesterday), but apparently he decides to make it everyday. As you see he is linking the page of one character in en: to a page giving a summary of characters in fr:. Maybe someday in the future that character will have his page in fr:, it is hard to say, but in the meantime that interwiki is wrong. That being said, there is a link between the 2 pages, so if it is too much work to tweak it, don't bother. Just thought you would like to have the feedback. Alex lbh 10:24, 15 April 2006 (UTC)

Bot is doing everything correctly - if there is a link from en: to fr:, there should be corresponding link from fr: to en:. When its missing, the bot adds it. See the FAQ above. --Yurik 09:15, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

I see. The point is that in this case, the page the en: ->fr: interwiki is refering to was transformed into a redirect to another page. So I think the interwiki will have to be modified in en:, but don't you think the bot should detect he is redirected and avoid putting the link in that case? Alex lbh 12:26, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Penglai Mountain

Your bot kept adding de:Penglai to Penglai Mountain, which I removed twice because the German article is about the city, not the mountain. Unfortunatelly there is not much I can do -- the bot follows the steps outlined in the FAQ above, and it tries to find ONE article in each language to interlink with all others. All interwiki bots do the same thing, as we firmly beleive that a single concept (like the mountain) can have a unique corresponding article in the other languages. If another, similar concept (like the city) with the same name is introduced, it should have a separate article. If the same page covers both, and another language has two pages for each concept individually, then the page should be linked to whichever concept it has more of (if its mostly about the city - link to the city, otherwise link to the mountain - don't link to both). --Yurik 09:24, 16 April 2006 (UTC)

Placebo effekt (Danish language)

Your bot has changed the Danish language link to a less used version of the term. A Google search of Danish use reveals a large difference, in spite of Dane's strong tendencies to turn phrases into single words (fortunately not to the degree as Inuits do it!):

• placeboeffekt - 654 hits.
• "placebo effekt" - 1,300 hits.

You are absolutely correct! I wasn't aware that it was a link to the Danish article, and was just pointing out a usage issue. It turns out that many of the links with the words separated, had the words joined with a hyphen, which is common i Danish, making the conjoined form also very correct. A conflict at Al Jazirah (state)

Why did the bot erroneously change the link at Al Jazirah (state) from ar:ولاية الجزيرة (the correct one) to ar:الجزيرة (describing islands in general)? The bot may modify a link because of one of the following: the page was a redirect to another page (true, it doesn't seem that way from the history); one of the pages was reported as deleted (it happens on ocasion, and we still don't know why); one of the pages was a disambig, while the other was "normal" - so the bot automatically picks the one that matches with the original. The edit is unfortunatelly not weird but kinda makes sense :) sv:Alice is a regular article, whereas en:Alice is a disambiguation. Somewhere on one of the linked pages there is a link to en:Alice, South Africa, and because that page is not a disambig, it gets picked as matching to the original non-disambig sv:Alice. The solution would be to make the sv: article a disambiguation, or the english a non-disambiguation -- and split it up into several pages: about the name, about other things called Alice, etc. --Yurik 09:05, 20 April 2006 (UTC)

No, your explanation doesn't make any sense. It's the duty of the bot creator, not the article creator, to think twice while programming if it is going to mess up CORRECTLY written articles. Some articles don't have the disambigs as there is nothing to disambig yet (no further articles). Still your bot makes nonsensical interwiki links (see the "interwiki" message below)

I'm drooling over the possibilities here - this is very nice. Is the interface reasonably stable? History previews are the first obvious application for me, so I'll try to work that into the popups when I find the time. Just one link

Hi, please can you explain what happens, when someone creates a new page in the Latin wikipedia and let an interwiki link point to the correspondig English page, which keeps - let's say - 20 interwiki links to other pages. The author does not link back from the English page to the Latin page: Will your bot add the Latin page to the English page and those 20 other pages and will it add the 20 other pages to the Latin page? One link is generaly enough - whenever i run the bot on la:, that page will be updated, as well as english and all other pages. On the other hand, if you want the page to be updated faster, place a link on en:, because then you don't have to wait for me to run it on la: - any other related page in any linked language will triger the update through english. --Yurik 23:59, 29 April 2006 (UTC)

Bot on Portuguese Wikipedia

The bot keeps changing the link of the english version in the 'other languages section' (it should point to Patch, here in english wikip) to the especific computer related article with the same name (Patch (computing)). Is there a way to get the wiki markup for a given article/oldid with query.php, as opposed to retrieving the whole page in html and trying to extract the wiki text? It would be great if that can be added if there's no existing way. Getting the html isn't so nice, because it gives a whole lot of expanded templates and so forth that's not needed. Thanks. Just to tell you that your bot made a mistake. It made a interwiki link between fr:Saint-Barthélemy (Guadeloupe) and pl:Saint-Barthélemy (Manche). I think the good link will be pl:Saint-Barthélemy (Manche) to fr:Saint-Barthélemy (Manche). I made the modify in french but not in polish. I hope this will help your bot. Regards. Bot is just following existing links. All articles in the wikipedia are interconnected, so when someone modifies a French version of a Polish aricle (for example), that change will be reflected in Polish, as well as all other related articles. Hi Yurik, whenever I see "robot Modifying: xx" in the watchlist I have to doublecheck the changes. Yes, I agree interwikies are a mess but rather often your bot is just messing it up more. Modifications are usually caused by page renaming. It would make no sense to point to a redirect, as that would cause problems in the future - someone might decide to make a disambig page instead of the redirect, and all of a sudden you have a conflict (some pages point to a specific topic, and some - to disambigs, all in the same language). That is actually the reason for the second type of modifications - if bot determines while following an english topic A, that there are two pages in Italian, one a disambig and another is OK, it will modify all references to disambig to point to the regular page instead (unless the original english page A was also a disambig). This may cause some confusion, but should be cleaned up, otherwise we will end up with even a bigger mess. :) You are right that we need to look at any modifications by the bot. It ought to be quite easy to verify page moves as they leave #REDIRECT [[<new name>]] behind (although it is little bit more complicated with local language redirect words). Hebrew Wikipedia interwiki

1. At Hebrew Wikipedia, there is a lot of interwiki going on. Since I'm involved in it, and my IP address keeps getting blocked at English Wikipedia, several pages need to be interwikied here. Can you keep going to Hebrew Wikipedia for this?
2. Does your bot do Category pages? Several of those could use updating.

You were right - the German wiki had a bunch of links to articles on superstring theory in the other wikis. I removed them. Any estimate how long before the interwikis will be updated? Also, is there any way for us in the He Wiki to get a list of articles which the interwiki bot will not update due to a conflict? I think most Wiki sysadmins would like to know of such articles. Eddie, the bot only fills-in the missing links, but it does not "guess". Which means that there has to be at least one link, for example from English to Hungarian page, before the bot helps and adds a link from Hungarian back to English. See the faq above. --Yurik 01:46, 14 May 2006 (UTC)

InterWiki-ing "Bestseller"

I recently removed the IW on da:Bestseller, since the danish article is about the clothing company Bestseller, while the other languages seem to be about best selling books. query.php bug: rvcomments doesn't work any more

The example on the query.php help page, http://en.wikipedia.org/w/query.php?format=xml&what=revisions&titles=Main_Page&rvlimit=100&rvstart=20060401000000&rvcomments no longer gives the revision comments. Looking for bots

Hello Yurik, you might be answer my question. (1) I'm looking for a bot that make a list of pages without interwiki links. I've created a project page in Thai Wikipedia (th:วิกิพีเดีย:จับคู่บทความ) by using interwiki.py scan the XML dump file and then used the Microsoft Excel open the interwiki.log searching for the page without the links. After I updated twice I think it is kind of cumbersome method, so I think it might be another easier way to do. (2) My second question is that I'm looking for a bot that can find only the red links in a set of articles and create a list. This is similar to Special:Wantedpages but just for specific portals. I created one manualy in Thai Wikipedia at th:วิกิพีเดีย:บทความการ์ตูนที่ต้องการ. I used to ask these questions in Wikipedia:Bot requests before but did not really get the answer I want. query.php: imagelinks doesn't work for commons images

I've just added the output from imagelinks queries to popups for images, which seems like it'll be pretty useful. Unfortunately it doesn't work for commons images like this one: [8]. Not a bug, but a feature! :) The filtering parameter, ilfilter, specifies for which pages to generate results. By default, it is set to existing, but the image page does not exist (for en) - thus it is not shown. To see the results, use this: [9]. --Yurik 17:53, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

Another thing that doesn't work as I'd expect is that deleted images don't seem to give any imagelinks. For example, Image:Somerights.png has backlinks listed on the image page, but [10] has none. Yurikbot on Chinese wiki

I'm wondering if you are running YurikBot on all articles of Chinese wiki? Your bot is doing about 6 edits per minute, so it looks like you are running through the articles rather than doing edits because of multi-lang logins. If you aren't running through them all, could you tell me which subset you are running on so I don't run my bot zh:Vina-iwbot on the same ones? Query.php

Have you thought using query.php=content in pywikibots? Wouldn't it be better than exporting pages? I compared these two methods with 60 pages: getting and reading query.php=content=xml took 1-2 seconds while basic exporting took 7-8 seconds. Good job! --HartzR 08:37, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Whoa, I was a bit lazy and used 10 different items and copied them six times to get a list 60 items long. Query.php removes duplicates? Now getting and reading 50 pages took 4-5 seconds. It's still faster than exporting; at least because getting the pages with query.php using Python requires much less code. I'm a bit surprised :) -- Not sure why it would run faster really, same type of calls. All the performance metrics are logged, so later i will have a chance to analyze them. The pywikipediabot should use all the new query features, but i just didn't have enough bandwidth to work on that - the framework is fairly complex and has lots of code that will have to be reexamined. Very sorry - the bot has not been updated with the localized redirect name, and thought the page is a regular page. I am trying to persuade the core framework writers to switch to the query.php (see above) method of parsing pages - it will totally remove any such issues. Can you please exclude the page Minor characters in The Adventures of Tintin from the list your bot visit when it adds interwiki links? Because on en: we have a single page for all the minor characters and on some other sites they have separate pages for each of them, this is a case where interwikilinks should not be bidirectional. Unfortunately, the bot always wants to make bi-directional linking, which is not appropriate in that case. Of course, I could solve the problem by removing the interwikilink to Minor characters in The Adventures of Tintin on all the minor characters in every language. Not only would this be a huge job, but it would also remove useful interwikilinks to en:. I think that the bot's code must be a improved to take into account the cases where bedirectional linking is not desirable. Breton Wikipedia links

With Wikipedia syntax, normally, if a part of a word is beetween [[ and ]], all the word is underlined. However, on Breton Wikipedia, diacritics go wrong. For example on Brezhoneg page, only « gwerzio », and not « gwerzioù », is underlined with the syntax [[gwerz]]ioù. We tried to change the br:mediawiki:linktrail page by adding « ñ » and « ù » letters, in the French way (fr:mediawiki:linktrail), and then by adding also the « c'h » letter (« c'h » is a letter in Breton language, uppercase « C'h », so when this signs are used, apostrophe doesn't mean a new word) in the Spanish way (es:mediawiki:linktrail), but there was no change, neither with the French way, neither with the Spanish way. Replacing redirects ... is this possible?

Hi, is it possible to make a bot, which substitutes a link to a redirection page with the link to the target page? Example:

* Page A: "... [[Page B|bla bla]] ..."
* Page B: "#REDIRECT [[Page C]]"

The bot should edit "Page A" to

* Page A: "... [[Page C|bla bla]] ..."

Or ... does such a bot already exist?

Hi, I am very sorry that you keep running into this: the problem is that some page somewhere has an incorrect link, and that link gets copied everywhere else. Please look at EVERY language page linked, and see which one has an incorrect link. I am currently investigating how to make a tool that would help cases like this - so that users can visualize all links and remove incorrect ones, instead of doing it by hand.
