YurikBot and {{copyvio}}

[edit]

YurikBot recently added cy:Ynys Seiriol (correctly) to Puffin Island. The only problem is that Puffin Island was marked (by me) as a {{copyvio}}, which includes the statement "Please do not edit this page for the moment". Shouldn't YurikBot take account of that? --Stemonitis 07:53, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

There are two problems: 1) A list of every language's copy vio template needs to be created. 2) Lets say there is a conflict (see FAQ) - A links to site B, that links to site A but to a different page. This causes the bot to ask the user which page corresponds to which, and later it needs to correct them all to fix the conflict - otherwise another bot would have to bug the user. With the template, bot can either a) ignore the page all together or b) force the change. I need to think about it a bit more. --Yurik 14:59, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Afrikaans

[edit]

Hi Yurik,

Apparently the remark about bots on af. came from you. Your name got lost in the shuffle and I was a little worried about yet another outsider making a mess of the year pages there (That is what happened to us a couple of times and that's why it is the mess it is..) Alias added your name back on and please allow me to respond and apologize if my reaction sounded a little frustrated.

YES! It would be wonderful if someone could help us clean up the mess by bot. If you like I can give you a few things that need to change:

  1. There are a whole bunch of pages with 8de eeu, this needs to be 8ste eeu.
  2. There may still be pages with 1e instead of 1ste for first (both AD and BC)
  3. The correct indication for BC is v.C. I tried to eradicate things like v. C. and v. Chr. but there may be a few left.
  4. To my knowledge there is no agreement over the 0 or 1 as initial for decades and centuries. I'd say; Take a pick and make them all the same.

The suffix is usually ..de 6de, 10de etc. Exceptions:

  1. 1ste
  2. 8ste
  3. 20ste
  4. 21ste etc all with twenty
  5. 30ste same

Latin Name of Cologne

[edit]

Yurik, noticed that your bot changes the Latin name of Cologne... good thing... but the name you specify is wrong! The original Latin name of Cologne is: Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensis. Thanks for considering and changing this. --User:Teutsch

Bot did everything correctly - article la:Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensis does not exist, and someone made a different link, which bot picked up and used everywhere else. --Yurik 04:45, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Joinery

[edit]

I note that you have put a number of foreign language equivalents of this page name on the Joinery page. I don't know how much it matters but the French one for example is Ébéniste. I would have used this word to mean cabinetmaker. In England at least, joinery is things like stairs, window frames and so on. A joiner might make a simple piece of furniture as a panel beater might raise a bowl but it is not really his trade. The French for joinery is (la) menuiserie.

Sicilian formats

[edit]

Hi Yurik. The sicilian formats you have look fine, but I changed the BC years to, for example, seculu II a.C. and 50 a.C.. There was originally a space between the a. and C. but we have since fixed that in scn.wiki. The other thing is that we generally use the small letter for the months, e.g. 3 di marzu, etc. the other change I made to reflect where we are heading in scn.wiki is to use the accent on the last four months of the year: sittèmmiru, uttùviru, nuvèmmiru, dicèmmiru. Thanks. --pippudoz - (waarom? jus'b'coz!) 00:01, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why is it a good idea to remove interwiki links to articles that have not yet been writtten? It seems bad to lose information. Is it policy? — Pekinensis 00:14, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Its simply a matter of value - interwikies that do not point to an article are not very helpful, mostly because they are not shown as red links. They would create a large iw list, but if half of them are not there - the user wouldn't know which one to click to see an article in another language s/he knows. --Yurik 00:25, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

This template was activitated at other Wikipedias, but other users are complaining to me about this being removed from interwiki links. I also had some strange edit with your bot at Belarus. STATUS: BOT IS ACTIVE AGAIN WITH NEW SETTINGS

[edit]

Please let me know of any problems you found. I am running a stock bot (latest version from pywikipediabot). At the moment it appears that a large number of page requests gave "there is no such page" answers, so the problem might be related to the wiki outage last night, or the bot incorrectly interpreting some new and unusual responses. Please be patient, and very sorry for the trouble. Thanks! --Yurik 20:14, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that for pages with more than 1 link, this won't cause a long-term problem - the next time any bot runs, it will restore the deleted links. --Yurik 21:28, 25 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
What the hell does that mean? Are there whole herds of these out-of-control bots attacking us from all directions? I've gotten into agruments with another of them, but I didn't know that if we fix or shut down one, another will step into its place to keep screwing things up. Gene Nygaard 01:50, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
The bot has been paused for investigation. Bots provide a useful service (otherwise i wouldn't deal with them) to let humans concentrate on more creative work (page content). My bot is the official (most commonly used) pywikipediabot specially designed for interwikies. Overall the bot has contributed close to 50K fixes to the wiki, improving inter language links. Yes, it had its problems, but the rate of success has been enormous. For example, compare it to the number of vandal changes to each page. --Yurik 04:57, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Update: Bot has been restarted on all sites it was working on recently, this time without the ability to delete existing links (it will only add new links). This will automatically fix most of the mistakes it made. Apparently the problem lies in the fact that there is no explicit "no such page" answer given by the server to the bot, thus bot assumed pages were missing and deleted links to them. --Yurik 04:57, 26 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It removed the fr: link. I have restored it. --Chris S. 21:24, 25 September 2005 (UTC) Thanks[reply]

On the Esperanto wikipedia, Yuri Bot erraneously creted the new article Aldous HUXxley. This is due to an automatic substitution used in the Esperanto Wikipedia: ux becomes ŭ. Query by Example

[edit]

Hi there, in the English Wikipedia, someone made QBE a redirect to Microsoft Query by Example, which is wrong, since QBE is an historical database query language in its own right. Anyway, this redirecting lead to the changing of the en:QBE link in the German Wikipedia for Query by Example to the microsoftish article, which may lead to the wrong impression that MS invented QBE.

I repaired en:-link in the german article, deleted the redirect from the english wikipedia and started a new QBE article.

You might want to check other languages the bot changed.

Needle != Knitting needle

[edit]

I just rved a bunch of links added by your bot to Knitting needle---it was linking to all the "Needle" pages in other languages, most of which had just a bullet point mention of a knitting needle, if indeed they mention it at all. If your bot is running according to the specs you claim above, it seems like it shouldn't be doing that---you should probably investigate. /blahedo (t) 05:01, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The bot worked as expected - Knitting needle has a link to de:Stricknadel, which in turn has links to many other sites. The only exception to what i have above is the link from de: back to en:Needle. Usually this entry would be skiped (en->de->another en), but in this case Needle gets ignored because its a disambiguation page, whereas Knitting needle is not. Thus all the links from de: are taken and added to en:. To clean it up, make sure you remove erroneous entries in both de:Stricknadel and nn:Strikkepinne (i will do it myself this time). --Yurik 21:56, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
If that's "expected", then your expected behaviour is broken. Knitting needle should link to de:Stricknadel, because that's what it is. de:Stricknadel should redirect to de:Nadel, because that's where the paragraph about knitting needles is. And de:Nadel should link to Needle, because the one is a multi-stub page with lots of types of needles and the other is a disambiguation page with links to lots of types of needles. Why should the fact Needle is a dab make your bot disregard it? Why should wikipedia lose information (in this case, the link from Knitting needle to de:Stricknadel), just because it triggers your bot? /blahedo (t) 22:28, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you that we need to rethink the way such cases are handled (one site has individual pages per sub-topic plus the main dab (or non-dab) page, while another, smaller site has an article describing all the subtypes on one page. Currently, bots always resolve redirects, as otherwise when the page is moved, the interwiki to it won't get updated. In the mean time, we must keep Knitting needle and de: separatelly, otherwise every standard pywikipedia interwiki bot will re-add all various links back. --Yurik 05:23, 14 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your bot

[edit]

Dear Yurik, the interwiking efforts of your is much appreciated at wiki.pt, but there are some irregularities which you have to correct, namely the interwiking of articles marked with templates {lixo}, {impróprio} and {vda} (garbages and copyvios). By placing interwikis in these articles (example), you are allowing them to count for the bulk article number of wiki.pt and we dont wnat that. Please take the necessary arrangements so your bot bypasses these articles. Cheers, muriel@pt 09:17, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Very sorry, accidently uncommented lb in my user file. Please post a link to the rule. Also, please mark my bot as such so it may continue. At present, the bot is active in almost 40 wikies, with very few issues. Having some wikies without the bot causes significant problems for the rest of the community, as they frequently point to the outdated pages or cause conflicts. Also, if LB: requires special interwiki handling, please let me know, and i will update the bot. Thanks! --Yurik 17:09, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Please find here lb-wiki's bot policy. Your bot may be marked as such only after having gone through some tests, in order to make sure that it works properly. Lb-wiki indeed requires special interwiki handling, but I still need to codify the present usage (hope to get this done by this evening or tomorrow - please revisit the bot policy page once it's done). We certainly acknowledge the need for an interwiki bot updating the links from time to time - we only feel concerned about server speed and the respect of what is the current usage at lb-wiki in handling interwiki matters. But I am sure that a proper update of your bot will make it comply with all requirements. --Otets 20:40, 16 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Yurik,

Just checking in to tell you that the interwiki procedure has gotten easier (and hence more bottable) on Nynorsk Wikipedia. Now, there is only one comment tag before the interwiki section:

There is no separate skanwiki comment tag, and the languages no(nb), sv and da are not required to be doubled anymore. So if you want to start letting your bot run on NNWP again, it will be much easier than it was before. :-) All the best, Olve 18:20, 28 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Small problem with Yurikbot

[edit]

Hello, just a small problem with Yurikbot: in the french wikipedia, there was already a manually placed interwiki to :en on the article fr:Aéroport international Jean-Lesage de Québec. Yurikbot added the same link a second time on the page. The problem, I think, was that the manually added interwiki was En:... (with a capital E) and that the one added by Yurikbot was en:... (with a small case e). The first link was already working. Maybe Yurikbot should check for links with capital letters and just change them to links with lower case letters, instead of adding a link. Cordially, fr:Utilisateur:Boréal - 2005-12-05 - 10:30.

Thanks! I will look into it. --Yurik 16:30, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. The article Anatomical terms of location incorrectly links to a spanish article that talks about one specific bone (es:Occipital). A user had already erased the interwiki and your bot replaced it. Can we ask your bot to erase the link in all other wikipedias? Thanks. Ronaldo16 (✉) 23:14, 11 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's done. I did it myself.Ronaldo16 (✉) 01:49, 12 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
