Guild of Copy Editors mentor program
[edit]I am currently developing a mentor program for the Guild of Copy Editors. Since you're new to Wikipedia and to the Guild, I was wondering if you would like to be the first one to try this new mentor program? The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 02:55, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
- Sounds interesting! How would it work? Yourstruly42 (talk) 03:03, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
- First, I would like to see how well you can copy edit. Go to Category:Wikipedia articles needing copy edit, choose an article, and copy edit it. Then I'll review the copy edit and determine the areas in which you can improve. Sound good? The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 03:07, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
- Sounds like a plan. I was browsing through the new members' guide to the style manual, just to get a sense of Wikipedia-specific stylistics I might need to be familiar with. After I'm done browsing, I'll pick an article, edit it, and let you know what it was. Does that work for you? Yourstruly42 (talk) 03:12, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
- Yes, that works. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 03:21, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
- In retrospect, I realize that it's probably too late tonight for my brain to edit properly. I'm in Montreal, so it's getting near my bedtime. Also, my brain is fried from reading an entire style guide. Anything I edit right now will definitely not be a showing of my best work. I'll do some editing tomorrow and point you to the articles. (I just don't want you waiting around now for something that might not show up for 12 hours or more.) Thanks for your offer of help! Yourstruly42 (talk) 03:31, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
- I did an edit of The Land Beyond the Magic Mirror, showing my true geeky nature. Mostly grammar and syntax, with a few links fixed in the header. Let me know what you think, and thanks again! Yourstruly42 (talk) 16:42, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
- Nice work. Now I would like you to try a longer article, such as Porous glass. Also, have you signed up for the Guild's January 2011 Backlog elimination drive? If not, I would recommend it. If you need more information about the drives, see here. The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 22:07, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Utahraptor! I saw that you did a few updates to my Machine embroidery edits. I was wondering what you thought overall, especially given that it was somewhat of a mess before I started, and I'm still learning Wikipedia's style guide. Yourstruly42 (talk) 04:54, 29 January 2011 (UTC)
- I did a slight cosmetic edit on a couple of the links for The Land Beyond the Magic Mirror, but I concur you did nice work! 129.33.19.254 (talk) 22:35, 26 January 2011 (UTC)

I spent the better part of two hours editing the Machine embroidery page. Still not completely satisfied with the results, but there was a lot of editing for tone and redundancies. (Parts of it read like a how-to guide, which I tried to fix.) Comments, of course, are appreciated, and I'll read them just as soon as I've given my brain a bit of a rest. Copy edits
[edit]First, I would like to say that you are a fine copy editor. You seem to have caught on fast, and you definitely show great potential. There are a few minor issues that need to be addressed:
- Your copy edit to Internal passport was good, but I noticed that there was a little jargon in the article. Remember to reword sentences with jargon.
- I noticed that the pronoun "you" was also used in the article. This should be rarely done. Typically, pronouns such as "I" and "you" should be avoided in Wikipedia articles, except when using quotes from a source.
- There were a couple serial comma issues, as well. When giving a list (such as bananas, apples, and grapes), one must be consistent in whether or not the last comma is used.
Other than that, you've done a fine job so far. Keep up the good work! The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 00:33, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks! I worked professionally as a subtitle editor for a year and a half, so I'm glad I've still got some of the skills. (*grin*) Regarding the "you" in the internal passport article, I noticed it at the time, but since I had no idea what that section of the article meant, I decided to leave it as-in instead of changing something substantive and consequently incorrect. Thanks again for all your help! How else do you foresee the GOCE mentor program working? Yourstruly42 (talk) 05:23, 30 January 2011 (UTC)
- We hope to welcome and mentor all new Guild members, as the Guild is easily one of the fastest growing WikiProjects on Wikipedia. I'm working on getting a project page set up for the mentor program, and I'll let you know when I've finished it. If you have any questions about the Guild and how it works, please ask me or any of our coordinators. Cheers, The UtahraptorTalk/Contribs 14:35, 30 January 2011 (UTC)

If you participated in the November 2010 Backlog elimination drive, you may have earned roll-over words (more details can be found here). GOCE drive invitation
[edit]Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors
The latest GOCE backlog elimination drive is under way! It began on 1 July and so far 18 people have signed up to help us reduce the number of articles in need of copyediting. This drive will give a 50% bonus for articles edited from the GOCE requests page. Although we have cleared the backlog of 2009 articles there are still 3,935 articles needing copyediting and any help, no matter how small, would be appreciated. We are appealing to all GOCE members, and any other editors who wish to participate, to come and help us reduce the number of articles needing copyediting, as well as the backlog of requests. If you have not signed up yet, why not take a look at the current signatories and help us by adding your name and copyediting a few articles. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories: "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". |
