Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Kadhalan-shooting.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Kadhalan-shooting.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. —SpacemanSpiff 18:11, 28 January 2012 (UTC)

removing watermarks

FYI... when removing watermarks from images it is customary to either remove the {{watermark}} template from the image description page, or change it to {{watermark removed}}. Changing it to "watermark removed" shows that any relevant information from the image watermark has been moved to the image description. Nice work by the way. – JBarta (talk) 14:17, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Ok. I will. Thanks for the update --Jenith (talk) 14:39, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

datestamp removal

Hi Yjenith. I noticed that in some watermark removals you did, you changed {{watermark}} to {{watermark removed}}. That's good. But to do that for a datestamp essentially places an inaccurate tag on the description page. "Watermark removed" states "Attribution information, such as the author's name, e-mail, website, or signature, that was once visible in the image itself". In this example no such attribution information was removed or moved. Only the date was removed. So, if you remove an attribution watermark, use "watermark removed" (and make sure the attribution info is in the description). If you remove a datestamp, just remove "watermark" (and put the photo date in the description if you think it's pertinent). – JBarta (talk) 23:36, 13 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Jbarta. Sure. I will take a note of this. I have validated in this example. So, to validate that, the watermark information can be anywhere in the description page ex: Summary: Source/Date attribute or meta data? --Jenith (talk) 03:01, 14 February 2012 (UTC)
Well, where a watermark is an attribution ("Photo by Bob" for example) if it's not there already, it can be transcribed to the Source or Author section... or anywhere else that's convienent. Sometimes, though rarely, author information is in the image meta-data. At any rate, it's just a courtesy that if we remove a photographer's watermark, we at least make sure that his credit is somewhere on the description page.
Date watermarks are a little less of a concern. Those can simply be removed, then remove the {{watermark}} tag. That said, it's sometimes a useful practice to make sure the photo date is also noted somewhere in the description. Hope that helps. – JBarta (talk) 03:25, 14 February 2012 (UTC)

Display title

Hi Jenith! I've just been looking at your userpage and couldn't help noticing that you've copied a snippet of code off my userpage that alters the way the page title is displayed. They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery but I find it a little bit jarring to be honest. You see, the font, colours, spacing and lowercase are exactly the same as my company logo. What I mean is that the title on my userpages is my company logo. (I was being sneaky really, shh!) Would it be rude of me to ask you to change yours a little? Here's one suggestion:

YJenith
{{DISPLAYTITLE:<span style="font-family:Impact; font-size:150%; line-height:120%;"><span style="display:none;">User:</span> <span style="color:#FF9933;">'''Y'''</span><span style="color:#128807;">'''Jenith'''</span></span>}}

You might have to play around with the font-size and line-height in-situ to get it looking just how you want it. You may also be interested in this message box that I made today. It stands out a little bit better than the userbox, I feel. (Check it out on my user page and talk page.) Well, see you at the Graphic lab! Kind regards, nagualdesign (talk) 13:06, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi Nagualdesign, I reused your display title as it was appealing. I was not aware of when taking that it was your own company design. May be you will copyright it now :-).
Thanks for your design help. sure I will change my display title soon.
Yep. This message box is cool one. Thanks --Jenith (talk) 13:29, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Jenith. It's actually been my company logo for 7 or 8 years, but isn't a registered trademark. By the way, if you want to use DISPLAYTITLE on your talk page you'll have to use: <span style="display:none;">User talk:</span> (emphasis added), so perhaps using a subpage isn't best practice. Better to hard code it on each page. Enjoy. :-) nagualdesign (talk) 13:44, 29 February 2012 (UTC)
Sure. Thanks --Jenith (talk) 13:58, 29 February 2012 (UTC)

Just chiming in here... you cannot copyright a lettering style. In other words, Nagualdesign might be able to claim a copyright/trademark on his name combined with the lettering style, but cannot claim that lettering style itself as copyrighted and suggest someone else cannot use that lettering + colors for their name. An exception *might* be highly stylized, unique and recognizable lettering... such as something similar to the Coca-Cola logo. Nagualdesign, just take it as a true compliment that you have very good taste that others admire. (I too think your "logo" is very cool.) – JBarta (talk) 21:32, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

Oh, and I might also add that claiming an actual copyright/trademark on one's Wikipedia userpage heading in any way might be a no-go all the way around... even if the name is nearly identical. I believe that everything you type in here is fair game for anyone to use. (hence all the web sites that directly copy Wikipedia content) – JBarta (talk) 21:56, 4 March 2012 (UTC)

You're preaching to the choir there, JBarta. I didn't wish to insinuate that I have any sort of legal claim, I just made a friendly request of Jenith and offered an easy copy/paste alternative. Sorry if I didn't make that clear, Jenith. My business is registered in the UK (so nobody over here involved in a similar business can use that name, regardless of font, etc.) but there's another Joe in California, also a designer, that uses the same business name. As far as copyrighting fonts is concerned, yes you can make your own font which others cannot use without consent, but I once made a client a logo that was very reminiscent of the Kellogg's logo (that was the brief) without infringing on any copyright, because both logos are 'hand drawn'. Thanks for the compliments though. You two are the first people in 8 years to make any kind of comment about my logo! :-) nagualdesign (talk) 05:12, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

No problem guys. I agreed the friendly request to amend my display title attributes as I respected the unique creative feel of Nagualdesign; his font (Trebuchet MS: Microsoft refers to Trebuchet MS as a good web design font) choosing and the good color combination though his text is shared by open license CC SA 3.0. --Jenith (talk) 07:39, 5 March 2012 (UTC)

A barnstar for you!

The Commons Barnstar
For your impressive work on the Commons. Vensatry (Ping me) 18:16, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

I think with a simple restoration like this, where you're not materially changing the image and where the unrestored version is unlikely to be used over the restored version, you can simply overwrite the original. Keeps things simpler and everything remains in one spot. That said, creating a separate version is fine, and is, I believe, even documented somewhere as the preferred practice (though I think it ought not be the preferred practice in all cases, this case being a perfect example). And nice job by the way. Well done. – JBarta (talk) 03:29, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Deepsea Challenger submarine.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Deepsea Challenger submarine.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Fut.Perf. 09:54, 23 March 2012 (UTC)
