You can just edit the redirect page, and post your new article there. Because you are the only person to edit the sandbox page, there is no problem with you copying it, and pasting it into the existing page, overwriting the 'redirect'. The Hurricane Herald

This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary of the WikiProject's progress and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list.

Please visit this page and bookmark any suggestions of interest to you. This will help improve monitoring of the WikiProject's articles.

From the editors

The project has gone since August without a newsletter, due to a lack of interest in its publication and development. This issue aims to catch up on major events and milestones since late summer 2009, and set a series of goals for the upcoming hurricane seasons. Your help in writing future issues is appreciated.

Typhoons Morakot, Ketsana, and Parma caused extensive damage to China, Taiwan, Philippines, and Vietnam in August and September. Their collective damages total in the billions of dollars and each storm caused hundreds of fatalities. All three of the storms' names were subsequently retired.

Thegreatdr (talk · contribs) is thanked for his tireless improvement of high-profile tropical cyclone and general meteorology articles; his production of rainfall maps for individual storms; and for his willingness to share his expertise where needed. Thegreatdr is largely responsible for the project's continued success, and has been instrumental in resolving many debates and discussions.

Thirteen Wikipedia users have joined the project since September, and several have returned after an extended absence: Hurricanehink (talk · contribs), Yellow Evan (talk · contribs), and Darren23 (talk · contribs). The list of inactive or retired users has remained mostly unchanged.

Goals for the upcoming season
Hurricane season in the Eastern Pacific and Atlantic basins is quickly approaching. Activity from new users typically increases substantially during the summer months, especially during active periods of tropical cyclone strikes. Precautions should be taken to ensure that content covering ongoing or recent events is kept up-to-date. Moreover, creation of new articles should be discouraged unless the storm in question presents an immediate or long-term threat to land.

Nonetheless, the project should encourage new editors to get involved; for this purpose the standard Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical cyclones/Invite template may be used.

The project should also make an effort to evaluate existing recognized content. A Project audit of featured articles has been proposed; ideally, each article should be reviewed for continued compliance with the FA criteria. Articles that no longer meet the criteria may be nominated for demotion, or alternatively, improved and updated.

Project news
September 2009 – A debate on the numbering of JMA tropical depressions in season articles took place. Much of the discussion can be read here.
October 2009 – The project was featured in a Signpost article, detailing its progress over the past two years.
December 2009 – Multiple Wikipedia Books—organized and printable compilations of related articles—are created under the project's purview.
Nilfanion (talk · contribs) proposed a revamp of the project's track map standards and naming conventions. This is likely a long-term project, and will be largely executed on Wikimedia Commons.
March 2010 – One of the project's core articles, Hurricane Katrina, was demoted from featured article status. Later in the month, it was suggested that more tropical cyclone-related articles are added to the rotating list of the Main Page's Selected anniversaries.

Hi Yellow Evan. Thanks for your hard work welcoming new users. However: please don't welcome users who haven't made an edit yet. It interferes with some forms of vandalism patrol, it's a waste of time and bandwidth as 99% of new accounts never edit anyway, and it has been held against people in past adminship discussions because it looks like edit count inflation. WikiCup 2010 April newsletter

Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. Congratulations to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), our clear overall round winner, and to Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions) and Norway Arsenikk (submissions), who were solidly second and third respectively. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Judge iMatthew has retired from Wikipedia, and we wish him the best. The competition has been ticking over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. Category:Towns in Nevada

Thanks for your message. I've begun fixing the orphaned category. The term 'town' is definitely used in Nevada regarding both incorporated and unincorporated areas. As always with this term there is variation in usage according to context. If the usage were to be expunged then, at very least, the category would need to become a redirect to another category which does the same job. Either way, these communities, bigger than than a truckstop, hamlet or village and smaller than a city, or at least not incorporated into a city, are there. They exist. They have sizable populations. It would be crazy to ignore them because of semantics.

  • Well, for commonsense sake, they do exist. If this were an encyclopedia of legal terms then those towns wouldn't be included except perhaps as a note to say the law doesn't recognise them. However, even that would be better than ridiculously pretending that a town doesn't exist until it has legal status.

        • It isn't just a matter of town boards. These are actual, real life communities of people who live and work in a town, which they often refer to as a 'town' or 'township' and which have histories of events and lives. A brief search of the websites belonging to these towns reveals the usage of the word goes on with or without a status in law. For instance, the town of Minden, Douglas County, Nevada has, as its website, www.TownofMinden.com. Minden has legal status as a County Seat and so do several of the little towns in Nevada. We have pages already defining town and township but these have never been restricted to merely legal definitions. A town can be defined in many ways, including, but not restricted to, the legal one. These towns have infrastructure and public facilities which are administered by public officials. Perhaps the solution would be to create an article 'Towns in Nevada' which would go into detail about the varying status of these communities through history, the ones which became cities, the ones which became ghost towns and the ones which continue as county seats and unincorporated towns to this day.

I think it's important to see that a town exists not only within the academic discipline of Geography, but also within Sociology and within the discipline of History, where towns rise or fall but remain part of the people's heritage. --wayland (talk) 17:18, 30 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please see my suggestion on the CFD discussion. While that may not be the final solution, it may work for now. The large problem is that the main settled area, or concentration of population labeled as a Place (United States Census Bureau) often includes a real community with the CDP covering a broader area. We are half way through round 3, with a little under a month to go. The current overall leader is Hungary Sasata (submissions), who has 570 points. He leads pool C. Pools A, B and D are led by Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and White Shadows (submissions) respectively. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. Two of last year's final 8, Sweden Theleftorium (submissions) and Iceland Scorpion0422 (submissions), have dropped out of the competition, saying they would rather their place went to someone who will have more time on their hands than them next round. On a related note, a special thank you goes to White Shadows (submissions) for his help behind the scenes once again. There is currently a problem with the poster, perhaps caused by the new skin- take a look at this discussion and see if you can help.
