[edit]Couldnt keep out of the Colombo page ha:)))) anyway I went to college funded by an Islamic Trust from Kilakarai in India. In my class there were 35 students just from Kilakarai and Nagoor. each and everyone of them had family in Sri Lanka including in Kathankudy when the mosque was attacked. That is, I had classmates whose family were killed. Just imagine my situation but they were really great about it. In the Religious school next to the college number so called Sri Lankan muslim students were in the boarding house (from great 5 to 12). Every time I went next to the boarding school they came out to talk to me in Sinhalese :)))) because they were feeling deprived of not speaking Sinhalese (From Beruwala and Colombo area) but even these Sinhalese speaking Muslism from Sri Lanka had relatives in Kilakarai. Reltionships amongst Mulsims between India and Sri Lanka was and still is lot more fluid than what political views would want us to belive.
Another interesting fact, I grew up with a close Muslim family in upcountry and they too were from Nagoor originally (3 geneartions ago). They assumed they were Tamil Muslims but in reality they were Pattani Mulsims from Tamil Nadu i.e Pashtun. They were surprsided when I pointed out from their last name which was Pashtun in origin. Tamil Muslims are divided into 3 groups, Marakayar, Lebbai and Pattani, this is apart from the Urdu speaking Deccani Muslims in TN. Pattanis are really Pashtun refugees who settled in TN. Lebbai in Kerala also speak Tamil(I dont know why).
Eastern province Muslims in Sri Lanka according to Obeysekkara seemed have come from Malabar, given that they must be Mapilla, Lebbai or Mukkuva converts to Islam. By far they are the largest Muslim community with the least voice in Muslim affairs. Taprobanus 21:34, 8 August 2007 (UTC)
