Monobook.js
What is the monobook.js file? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ro098 (talk • contribs) 00:53, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
- Your monobook.js file is the "skin" for Wikipedia. If you've never changed it in your preferences, the default "look" is called Monobook. There are a number of skins, each with different names. However, the coders tend only to write mods for the default, so you have to tweak things yourself if you use another skin. Your monobook.js file (js is for "java script" in case you didn't know) is at User/monobook.js . In your case, it would be here. Copy in the line, save the page, refresh the cache by pressing Ctrl-Shift-R, and you're done. Make sure you understand the policies, because it's easy to mess up and get Twinkle revoked, or even be blocked. Good luck. Xymmax (talk) 01:27, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Okay, I found a different way by going to preferences and then gadgets and applying it, but thank for your help.--Ro098 (talk) 20:55, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
- You're welcome. It turns out that Twinkle had been added to Gadgets, then removed, then added again. Glad you got it working. You may also want to use Popups if you don't all ready, they're complimentary. Xymmax (talk) 20:58, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
What does popups do, and how do I get it.--Ro098 (talk) 21:11, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
- Last question first - it's under Gadgets a couple of spots above Twinkle. If you hover over a wikilink, it will cause at window to appear. If the link is a user link, you get a list of options involving them - talk page, contribs, logs re that user, and so on. If it's an article you get a quick preview of the lead, and a few other choices. If its a "Diff" link, you get a preview of what the change or deletion was - very helpful for vandalism patrol. Xymmax (talk) 21:17, 1 May 2008 (UTC)
Okay. Thanks, I found it.--Ro098 (talk) 21:38, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

Oops I forgot. Article has been restored. Sorry. :) --PeaceNT (talk) 14:27, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
- No problem. Thanks :) Xymmax (talk) 17:59, 2 May 2008 (UTC)
Moved Millionaire articles
Hello there. I've seen you are the one who moved all the WWTBAM articles. Are you sure it is necessary to have the articles of shows which are written in the latin alphabet moved to the English name? I mean, also the local versions of Pop Idol and Deal or No Deal are listed under their local names. --Kazu89 ノート 13:53, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
- Hello as well. Am I sure? No. I performed the moves because a deletion discussion was held on the Chinese version of the show here, in which a number of editors commented that the name should be in latin characters. I agreed, and checked WP:UE which suggested to me that the most appropriate article name in English would be the name to which I moved the various articles. Since I was moving the Chinese article, I just went ahead and moved all of the shows that I could find at the same time. Having said that, I don't edit in this area normally, have no special expertise in this field, and have no plans to work on these articles further. If you feel that a different name is more in keeping with policy, you have my support in a move to the proper name. Take care, Xymmax (talk) 19:20, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
Grogg
Thanks so much for doing all that for me. You are very kind.

- No problem at all, I hope it helps :) Xymmax (talk) 16:55, 5 May 2008 (UTC)
Amateur radio
Hello. I'm trying to cut down on the WP:GAN backlog, and I noticed that you placed Amateur radio on hold some time ago. I looked at the talk page, and it doesn't seem that any of your points were addressed. If that's the case, you may fail the article. Nikki311 04:40, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
- Hi there. I left a post on the nominator's talk page a couple of days ago saying I'd fail the article at the end of the week unless there was a request for a second opinion. My plan is to close the nom on Friday. Take care, Xymmax (talk) 12:50, 7 May 2008 (UTC)
Administrator
Hey. How do I become an Administrator on Wikipedia?--Ro098 (talk) 20:07, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
- Well, I'm not one, so I can only tell you generally how it works. The short answer is, you post your intention to be one at the Wikipedia:Requests for Adminship page. If enough people think you should be one, you become one.
The blow by blow is more complicated though. There are a group of editors who regularly watch that page, and will discuss your nomination and offer an opinion as to whether they support you or not. Actually, anyone at all can offer an opinion in the discussion; I have on occasion. After a period of several days (7? 10? something like that) a wp:bureaucrat will promote the candidate if successful. As I understand it, although any registered user can ask to be an admin, you need to have been here for six months or so, have a few thousand edits and contributions to several different areas of the wiki (like writing articles and fighting vandalism or working on policy pages, etc) as minimum requirements to have a realistic shot. It also appears to me that its not unusual to fail on your first try. If youre curious, hang out at the RfA page - you can learn a lot about it there. Oh, and you could read the posts at the admin noticeboard to see the kinds of things that admins do to see if youre even interested. Take care, Xymmax (talk) 20:37, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
Can You nominate me?--Ro098 (talk) 21:28, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
- Sigh. Please don't take this the wrong way, but you would have no chance whatsoever at this point. That doesn't mean that you might not have everyting that it takes to be a fabulous admin, but you haven't been active here long enough to display those qualities to the other editors. The community has to have a certain level of comfort with its admins, and it gets that by seeing how you do over a longish period of time in a variety of situations. Why don't you first do everything you can do as a regular ediotr - write articles, discuss deletion, move pages to more appropriate locations, and so forth. When you're familiar with all of those sorts of things, and more people know you, then you'll be ready to consider adminship. Can you articulate now, in one sentence, why you even want to be an admin? Can you articulate why your being an admin will help Wikipedia? The answers to both of those questions need to be clear to both you, and anyone who wants to support you. So, at this time, I have to decline to nominate you. Take time, do some of the other things, and maybe in a few months you'll be ready to take a swing at it. Take care, Xymmax (talk) 21:45, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
I want to nominate you.--Ro098 (talk) 21:53, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, but as I mentioned at your talk page, I've declined. Thanks for thinking of me :) Even though I have a bit more experience here than you, in Wiki terms I'm still too new to seriously think about admin work. I'll see how I feel after a few more months here. Perhaps you'll be ready at that point too :) Xymmax (talk) 22:16, 9 May 2008 (UTC)
You seem like an admin--Ro098 (talk) 14:01, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks, you're very kind. Just hang around here a bit and in no time you'll be the same way. Xymmax (talk) 13:41, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Do You Know who the makers of Wikipedia were?--Ro098 (talk) 00:20, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
- Actually yes. Wikipedia is owned by the Wikimedia Foundation and was the brainchild of Jimbo Wales and to a lesser degree Larry Sanger. Take care, Xymmax (talk) 13:41, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
Rfb participation thanks
Hello, Xymmax.
I wanted to personally thank you for taking part in the project-wide discussions regarding my candidacy for bureaucratship. After bureaucratic discussion, the bureaucrats decided that there was sufficient significant and varied opposition to my candidacy, and thus no consensus to promote. Although personally disappointed, I both understand and respect their decision, especially in light of historical conservatism the project has had when selecting its bureaucrats. If you have any further suggestions or comments as to how you think I could help the project, please let me know. Once again, thank you for your support. -- Avi (talk) 17:58, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
- And thank you for taking the time to write a personal note. I'm sorry you weren't promoted (at this time) because I feel you would be an excellent 'crat, but I am hopeful that should you choose to again stand for promotion, there will be consensus to promote. Good luck. Xymmax (talk) 13:58, 13 May 2008 (UTC)
