Questions

{{helpme}} As I assume multiple editors are watching this page;I have a few questions:

  • What does <span class="plainlinks"></span> do?

A: It won't show an external link icon. http://www.google.ca vs http://www.google.ca

  • How do I change the color of text?

A: <font color=XXX> </font>

  • What does <tt> mean/do?

A: Well, let's see. Apparently it puts it in monospace.

  • What does <blockquote></blockquote> do?

A: It places the text in a block

like this

.

  • What does <includeonly></includeonly> do?

A:include only will hide the wrapped section and only display it when the page is transcluded

  • What does <noinclude></noinclude> do?

A: won't display the wrapped section when transcluded

  • What does <code></code> do?

A: just colors the text on an off-white background to look cool

Thanks(Ahead of time)!--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 02:45, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
Answered a few. Blockquote as far as I know just indents a bit, but I could be wrong. –xenocidic (talk) 03:10, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

It looks computery.;)--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 03:24, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
I use the <span class="plainlinks">blah</span> quite a lot, it sometimes just looks neater without the external link icon. I also use the <tt></tt> feature when a member asks how to use a certain piece of wikicode i.e. how to add an image to an article. It stands out more that way ([[Image:imagename.jp]]). ——RyanLupin(talk) 08:24, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
Re: monospace: Monospace fonts are those where every letter fills the same amount of horizontal space. This is particularly useful for computer programming and other applications where specific indentation matters. Compare "Wi" with "Wi". As for the tags themselves, <tt> represents "teletype", which simply shifts into a monospace font. <code>, however, is a code emulation tag. All aspects of formatting, including line breaks and whitespace, are retained. Wikipedia's own markup, however, overrides this behavior. The analogous form to <code> is starting lines with leading spaces. — Lomn 12:55, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Just a thought...

Hi there, I saw your recent prod of The Wicked Son by David Mamet. I have no doubt it was in good faith, but "Um...what is this article?! But it's probably a copyvio and somewhat biased and borderline vandalism" might be considered a little WP:BITEy, remember we were all new once! --BelovedFreak 12:21, 1 July 2008 (UTC)

Hey Xp, just though I'd bring this to your attention as I'm sure there's going to be someone who has you on their watchlist who'll moan and groan you for this but to earn the Experienced & Established Editor award, you need to have been a member for 1½ year. You've been here 4 months. Just giving you the heads up as I've seen members remove parts of your userpage before :P ——RyanLupin(talk)

About Archiving

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

Okay, I was replying to a message and then you archived your talk page? I think sections on your talk page should be out for at least 4-ish days before archiving. You just archived the minute after you replied to your message. Anyway, I agreed to what Xenocidic said. I reviewed your report and some didn't vandalize after their last warning. Remember, however bad they have vandalized, it has to be after their 4th warning is when you make a report. Still-- RyRy (talk) 21:51, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Dude I'm tired. I was about to log out when I got that annoying "new messages" tab. I'll reply later. Need my afternoon nap or something.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 21:52, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
Just a suggestion, but if you add this to the very top of your talkpage:
{{User:MiszaBot/config
|algo = old(7d)
|archive = User talk:Xp54321/Archive %(counter)d
|counter = 3
|maxarchivesize = 250K
}}
{{archivebox|auto=yes}}
it will automatically archive any thread that hasn't had anyone post in it for seven days to User talk:Xp54321/Archive 3 until that archive reaches 250k in size, and then automatically start archiving to Archive 4 and so on. It makes it a lot easier as you don't need to ever manually archive posts, and avoids the risk of archiving threads too early. It will also automatically add an index of links to those archives of yours which currently contain material (I can delete your currently empty archives, if you want, to stop them showing up in the index box). If you find the 7 days is too short, you can change the time (I usually keep mine set at 18 days). – ırıdescent 22:00, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
I use to have that setup actually. But some user(I forgot who maybe R2) persuaded me to archive manually instead and I've been doing so ever since. I use manual archive as to get rid of sections no longer in use which makes my "scroll time" much shorter. Eh...I'm really not sure. And it didn't really seem to work last time. Persuade me some more Iri.;)--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 22:12, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm curious to know why Huggle would be reporting users to AIV before they even have a level 4 warning? I don't think it should be doing that. Gary King (talk) 22:19, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
There's a button next to "Message User" called "Report User". Shapiros10 contact meMy work 22:20, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
(ec) Xp, it's quite alright to manually archive. I just don't think brand new sections on your talk page should be archived right after you reply to them one minute later. At least wait to archive about a week after the sections have been posted, not right after you reply yo them. -- RyRy (talk) 22:21, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
Not a case of persuading - what you do on your talkpage is down to you, and there's nothing to stop you manually archiving something early even with the bot in place. If you archive things (other than obvious templates) that are less than 24 hours old, don't be surprised if you get rude remarks for it, though; Wikipedia has users in every English speaking country in the world (and some others), and removing posts that have only been up for a few hours means that users in Singapore or Australia, for example, probably won't see them. – ırıdescent 22:29, 4 July 2008 (UTC)
That's an...unusual talkpage Iri... Old text based game or something? Anyways I'll leave posts up for 72 hours(3 days) before archiving. I promise.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 16:12, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Already there. Please give me rights(including staff..).This is my confirmation.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 16:19, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
Done. I've fixed the error - we're just short of CU atm!
16:26, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
Kay, is testing of dev and over allowed?--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 16:32, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
No... at least not at the moment. OVR would currently violate our license, as it can only be used in legal matters with GFDL. If we remove that, then we lost compatibility with WP. Dev is only used by me when i'm making updates. No need for testing, as it's deprecated at many other wikis. BG7even 16:38, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
OK thanks for clearing that up. What about cu? You said you had an interested admin from here.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 16:45, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
Currently, we're still searching. My admin was interested in helping look after the wiki - in fact, they already have an account with Staff Rights... BG7even 16:50, 5 July 2008 (UTC)
You mean Tbo 157? I saw him in RC. Figured it was him. Anyways we don't need Cu yet or any of the "specialist" user rights yet at the moment.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 16:54, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Yep. Great friend of mine. Precisely, we don't need them yet. Dev and Interwiki are taken now, they don't need noone else, and the rest can be filled by those who either don't want or can;'t have full sysop rights. I'm also thinking up some other random ones for our fun side! BTW lets take this to the wiki now, as it's very OT for WP!!! BG7even 16:59, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Hang on BG7 is probably doing maintenance and clean up. We don't have an error message for that yet. And R2 scribble wiki is poor in terms of software which is why we moved. You'll find the new wiki to be far more functional than the old one.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 17:23, 5 July 2008 (UTC)

Reverts review

Huggle

I went through all your reverts in your last 250 article edits (which were mostly reverts, so I looked at quite a lot of reverts). I found this, in which you didn't completely remove the vandalism. There was also this in which you just fixed spacing. This edit didn't remove vandalism (but you fixed it with your next edit). Your edit summary here wasn't the best. So it appears that there were 4 edits in the last 250 that could have been better. Useight (talk) 07:07, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Generally speaking you have improved significantly in recent weeks. :-) — Realist2 (Come Speak To Me) 08:23, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
Well thank you 4/250 is only 1.6% of my last 250 edits which is good.:) An A+.:D--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 17:24, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
No, uninstalling Huggle from your computer would not remove rollback from your account. Useight (talk) 20:20, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
Hmm, interesting question. I'm not positive, but I'm pretty confident that if an admin disabled your use of Huggle, it would not automatically remove rollback. However, I imagine that the admin revoking Huggle would also remove rollback rights. Useight (talk) 20:29, 6 July 2008 (UTC)
Just to clarify here; removing rollback automatically disables Huggle, but not the other way round. If someone's misusing Huggle the admin will sometimes remove Huggle without removing rollback, as removal of rollback stays in your log and can come back to haunt you, while removing Huggle is "invisible". (Rollback is a lot harder to misuse than Huggle.) – ırıdescent 20:41, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Just to give you a heads up, prods are different than CSDs - a user can remove a prod if he/so chooses, unlike with a csds. If that happens and the artilce still doesn't look noteworthy, next thing to do is sign it up for an AFDs. -WarthogDemon 01:49, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

He can. Usually when they do so it's to contest and improve the article. Other times, such as this, the article doesn't improve and that's when afd comes in. -WarthogDemon 01:53, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Bot message

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

As you may know, the StatusBot responsible for maintaining the status of the Highly Active Users was taken offline. We now have a replacement in the Qui status system. This semi-automatic system will allow you to easily update your status page found at Special:Mypage/Status which the HAU page code is now designed to read from. If you are already using Qui (or a compatible) system - great! - no action is needed (other than remembering to update your status as necessary). If not, consider installing Qui. You can also manually update this status by changing the page text to online, offline, or busy. While it is not mandatory, the nature of HAU is that people are often seeking a quick answer from someone who is online and keeping our statuses up-to-date will assist with this. Note if you were previously using your /Status page as something other than a one-word status indicator, your HAU entry may have been set to "status=n" to correct display issues. Please clear this parameter if you change things to be "HAU compatible". Further questions can be raised at WT:HAU. This message was delivered by xenobot 22:43, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

Hello there, I've reverted your close of this AfD. I've noticed that you've gotten reminders previously about being too eager to close AfDs, and I'm going to ask you to please keep this in mind. Take a look at Wikipedia:Non-admin closure for exactly which AfDs non-admins can close; namely, speedy keeps or snow keeps only. There's no hurry to be closing AfDs prematurely. Hi Xp54321, would you please check the edit I made which prompted your notice to me? I think you will see that I was reverting vandalism [1]. If you agree, would you remove the note from my talk page? Much appreciated, 99.173.23.182 (talk) 20:27, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Done Sorry about that you beat me to the revert so I accidentally warned you instead.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 20:32, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
No harm. We reverters are a zealous crew. 99.173.23.182 (talk) 20:39, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Great then!:) Do you have an account yet? If not consider creating one.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 20:40, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Had one for nearly two years, racked up many edits, helped with a few FAs and received a batch of barnstars. 'Retired' and continue anonymously reverting vandalism. Thanks, 99.173.23.182 (talk) 20:44, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Retired!?:( Why?--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 20:46, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
Clearly I'm not really retired. But I had stopped editing for content, and was tired of having my user and talk pages vandalized, which is inevitable when you edit vandalism. Also I am putting more energy into writing for publication. But the reversion game is still of interest, because Wikipedia is a decent venture, and I admire the integrity and goals of those who contribute positively. 99.173.23.182 (talk) 20:51, 10 July 2008 (UTC)
One of those users who quit because of frustration?:( Glad you didn't completely retire.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 20:53, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

In part. But a two-year stint and 14,000 edits is a pretty heavy-duty compulsion, so no one is to blame. Sometimes one just has to make a change. It has been great fun, and I've corresponded with some interesting contributors. Cheers, 99.173.23.182 (talk) 20:58, 10 July 2008 (UTC)

Yikes...

Seriously, Xp, what the hell did you think you were doing here? There is no way that should have been closed at all, let alone was it an appropriate non-admin closure. You were the only editor arguing to keep it. As you've been told many, many times, we appreciate you're trying to help but "anyone can edit this page" doesn't mean "anyone should edit this page". If you're going to get involved in XfD closures – one of the most controversial areas on Wikipedia even for our most experienced admins – please make sure you understand the policies you're enforcing and don't try to make them up as you go along. – iridescent 00:43, 11 July 2008 (UTC)

Rollback

Since I can see you posted to Xenocidic's talkpage a couple of minutes before me, I assume you've seen my post there; I've just made the connection between the history of that page and you. There is absolutely no way this could be considered a legitimate use of rollback. Please be more careful; whatever you might think of us, nobody wants to take rollback away from you again, but in light of your history consider this a final-final-warning. – iridescent 17:54, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

My suggestion would be to slow down a bit. There's no need to rush whilst using huggle - if you don't get to it, someone else will. When I was using huggle (yes, I used it for a short time), I rarely used the "revert and warn" button unless I was absolutely sure and the vandalism was completely off-the-wall inappropriate. If I was only 95% sure, I would just revert (no warn). If I was less than 90% sure it was vandalism, I'd just let it go (heck, that queue fills up so fast - let someone else review it). Anyways, hope this helps. –xenocidic (talk) 18:05, 12 July 2008 (UTC)

Someone, probably you, requested access to the account creation tool. For security purposes could you please confirm that it was you who made the request so we can approve you, thanks. ——RyanLupin(talk) 22:49, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
Are you an "interface admin" Ryan?:) Yes it was me.Confirmed.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 22:50, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
 Done
Thank you for applying to access the account creation tool. I have approved your request. You may now access the tool here. Before you do so, please read the tool's guide to familiarize yourself with the process. You may also want to join #wikipedia-en-accounts on irc and/or the mailing list. Keep in mind that the ACC tool is a powerful program, and misuse may result in your access being suspended by a tool administrator. Don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions. Thank you for your participating in the account creation process. ——RyanLupin(talk) 22:51, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
So you are an admin?--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 22:52, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
Xp, you have been granted the tool, even when you have no experience with ACC. Please don't use the tool as a badge. If you don't do some account creating, it will be revoked. Thanks, RyRy (talk) 22:54, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
A badge? No way! I'll get working on it immediately. Mind giving me a hand? --Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 22:57, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
Hangon I'm reading the documentation now. I'm surprised I was approved so fast.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 22:58, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes I am an admin on the tool, I've granted you access based on trust but bear in mind the tool is watched over by many admins who'll revoke your access without hesitation on the slightest hint of abuse. With that said...I'm sure you'll do fine and if you need help, just ask away! :) ——RyanLupin(talk) 23:06, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
I can assure I won't abuse it but I may make mistakes. From what I understand from reading the documentation:
  • Check for multiple requests and if the user is a vandal/sockpuppeter/troll
  • Check to see if the username is too similar to a current one
  • Defer the request if it is too similar
  • Create the account if there are no problems
  • What about the password? The requesting user gets it automatically by email correct?--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 23:10, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
All you really need to do is check the IPs recent contributions for vandalism, if the log is clean then click the create button. Don't worry about whether their requested username is too similar as you'll get notified of that. Don't worry about a password as the system will automatically generate one with the email. If the username is too similar, that's when you defer it to admins. Just read through WP:ACC/G, everything you need to know is on there. If you need help, feel free to message me or there's the IRC channel (#wikipedia-en-accounts) which is always buzzing with account creators. Don't worry too much, I have faith in you :) ——RyanLupin(talk) 23:15, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes, just leave the password blank and click "By email" when you create the account. –xeno (talk) 23:16, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes well done :) I noticed you tried adding a template on the new user's talk page which is great but just so you know, in your preferences section on the tool here there's an option to select automated welcoming which allows one of User:SQL's bots to greet them so you don't have too ——RyanLupin(talk) 00:31, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Hehe. Great then. I was worried at first but nothing went wrong so....:). Thanks for the pointer about the bot. I'll see to it.:D--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 00:34, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Using the bot to greet new users isn't compulsory. You're welcome to greet them yourself. Some users may appreciate a more personal welcome over an automated bot message but it's up to you ——RyanLupin(talk) 00:39, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Hey Xp, when you go to create a new user account but you get a notification that says the username is too similar to an existing one. Check the creation and contribution logs. If the user has been inactive for a long period of time, you can 'defer it to admins' who can then override the anti-spoof and create the account. The recent user you dropped is an example, Richard 52 has no contributions and created his account in 2006 so it's reasonable to assume that he's not coming back. I've reset your drop and the admin Bjweeks has gone ahead and overwritten it. Good work so far, don't let this discourage you from creating more accounts! :) ——RyanLupin(talk) 16:10, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Okay then thanks Ryan! What does the "reset" link on closed requests do?--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 16:12, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
The reset button will re-open the request so it'll bring it back to the 'Open requests' section of the tool. Oh and I know how much you love to monitor your statistics here on wikipedia, your creation statistics can be found here and here. Good luck ——RyanLupin(talk) 16:17, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Hehe you're making me remember my "editcounting" days. Thanks for the links Ryan!(Lupin that is,too many Ryans)--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 16:20, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Sorry Xp, as stated in my adopter profile here, I'm only accepting adoption requests if I'm absolutely required i.e. if a user wants me and me alone (no sexual innuendo implied). I'm preparing myself to go on a looooong wikibreak shortly so I don't really want to commit myself at the moment. Regards ——RyanLupin(talk) 01:04, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Please don't revert on User_talk pages...

Please don't revert on User_talk pages (as you did on mine) -- it still triggers the new message banner, but when folks look at their talk page, there's nothing new there. If you make a mistaken edit to a talk page, it's better to add an apology and explanation (and maybe remove most of the original, mistaken, text if you wish) than to simply revert. Hope this doesn't come across as too much of old-fart grumbling. ;-) JesseW, the juggling janitor 06:03, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Suggestion

Hi Xp,

Just a tip,

Can I suggest you stop getting your user to write about themself straight away?

Not only does it breach several policies (WP:COI coming straight to mind), but it is also frowned upon, and also I think your user should be taught about wikiquette and wikimarkup first of all, namely how to format talk page threads instead of jumping on someone elses.

Adoption is about teaching people how to edit the wiki, not just helping them here and there. If you're interested, you may borrow my adoption programme.

BG7even 16:39, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

Sorry about this Bluegoblin7. I was away today and have been extremely busy recently I only agreed to adopt him at Shapiros10's pleading. He was on the way to a block and he's a good-faith editor but I don't have the time at the moment to assume full adoption responsibility. I'm leaving for Las Vegas tomorrow and will be there for 3 days. I may be able to edit though I doubt it as I'll be busy enjoying shos circuses etc. Please don't WP:ABF or WP:BITE but at the same time don't be afraid to ask an admin to WP:BLOCK for WP:VANDAL. I cannot really accept some responisiblity for his actions as I was too busy to be in a position to help him. Sorry.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 01:04, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Young admins

I saw your userpage recently and noticed you want to be an administrator! Best of luck in becoming one, although I'd suggest refraining from publicly displaying your age if you plan on submitting an RfA—I'm sure you remember this disaster, and I would hate to see it happen again. I'm glad you removed your age from your userpage, but I also reccomend not stating it anywhere else as there is a lot of controversy surrounding minors and adminship. Hope you didn't find this too WP:BITEy, this is just a friendly reminder. :-) Cheers, —Mizu onna sango15Hello! 22:28, 25 July 2008 (UTC).

Mizu onna sango15, I happen to know of many young admins all of whom perform their duty as maturely and efficiently as their older associates. ——RyanLupin(talk) 22:30, 25 July 2008 (UTC)

I hear you. But know i'm lost cause some people wrote these bio's and stuff i'm just posting it. So i must cancel my account and have someone else post it? This is getting confusing. Well don't want to get use blocked so i'll check the rest of things out. Have a good trip. Hit me when you can.--Len Berzerk (talk) 02:10, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

I did and i'm tring to see were i might have messed up but i don't have a clue. I don't know what to write cause then i'll be promoting my self. I tried to use the bio and other info i had done for me and it seems to be no good. I linked everything and they seemed to be working. All links are there and true. With my info on it. It's all good. I'll guess i'll keep tring but really feel it might not work for me.--Len Berzerk (talk) 02:33, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
I'm doing my homework just was excited. Want people to have access to my background history in the music. So after the Tutorial what to do next.--Len Berzerk (talk) 02:45, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

re: suggestion

I think you archived a bit aggressively, Xp, as you nuked topics that weren't really resolved. Anyway, regarding User:Lenberzerk, I don't think you've got a solid grasp on what's going on, and should perhaps suggest to Shapiros that somebody else should help him out.

  • He likely wasn't "on the way to a block"
  • He certainly isn't about to require a block for vandalism, of all things
  • (added) He's presently open to working on his article outside mainspace. As such, no block, particularly for vandalism, is likely.
  • He doesn't need 26 varieties of alphabet soup thrown at him with no real support

Now, I'll agree that he isn't going to make headway posting his article, as it presently exists, to mainspace -- but that's two caveats. Neither of those precludes him from working on the article, which is what he's interested in. Is it likely to see the light of day? I don't know -- sourcing the version he has in mind seems unlikely, but there may well be sufficient notability to the discography to justify an article, which WP:COI does not prohibit. So if an article is what he wants to work on, then more power to him -- he's respecting the limits recommended, and that's good. There's no call to pigeonhole him into your vision of what Wikipedia should be about. — Lomn 03:20, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Very well Lomn. BTW I contacted User:Antonio Lopez and he agreed to co-adopt Lenberzer. And please calm down I'm doing my best. I have been extremely busy recently and the "alphabet soup" are all policies/guidelines. I was hoping he would learn them while I was gone.--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 03:25, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
My point there is that all that serves to do is overwhelm a user and cause them to ignore everything you post. Most of that stuff was neither relevant to a novice user of WP nor to someone interested in writing a particular article -- you pointed him towards a massive list and said "read everything", for crying out loud! "Hoping he would learn them" is likely, frankly, to accomplish nothing, as is making your most verbose description of Wikipedia one of how to bold and/or italicize text. — Lomn 03:31, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Ugh...I knew saying yes to Shapiros10's request might turn out to be a bad idea...:( Do what you wish. I have a trip to prepare for and I'm not going in low spirits!--Xp54321 (Hello!Contribs) 03:38, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
"Hi this is Len Berzerks Secretary" I have two questions
  1. 1 How do I make the article acceptable
  2. 2 Do I need to write the Bio over only referring to the discography?
  3. 3 What is wrong with the first article?--Len Berzerk (talk) 03:41, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
Sorry I know i said two but you guys are fast.--Len Berzerk (talk) 03:43, 26 July 2008 (UTC)
