Commons Categories

[edit]

Hi, I've been editing the categories of some of your uploads a few weeks ago. Still, the categorization of your latest uploads doesn't reflect these changes. For a file that is found in c:Category:Aerial photographs of Switzerland as well as in c:Category:Canton of Valais, the appropriate category is neither of these, but c:Category:Aerial photographs of the canton of Valais. For more information, see Commons:Categories. Thank you, Sitacuisses (talk) 22:08, 23 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. (Answering here for both comments from here and common.) Thanks for noticing me, I was not aware that you edited my uploads. I will change to use the categories as suggested then. Have a nice day! --XonqNopp Tk 04:28, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
PS: By the way, what about the "Alps" categories? Should I only use c:Alps of Switzerland or should I continue to put both this one and c:Alps? --XonqNopp Tk 04:33, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Just use the most specific. In most cases, you wouldn't use it at all, as the location itself (e.g. Matterhorn or Jungfraujoch) has already somehow inherited the Alps category. For the Jungfraujoch the lineage is:
Category:Alps
Category:Alps by country
Category:Alps of Switzerland
Category:Alpine passes in Switzerland
Category:Alpine passes in Switzerland by canton
Category:Alpine passes in the canton of Bern
Category:Jungfraujoch
So, for an image of the Jungfraujoch, all you need is Category:Jungfraujoch (or more specific) and none of the categories I listed above it. For an aerial image that shows larger parts of the Swiss Alps, rather than c:Alps of Switzerland, you'd use c:Aerial photographs of the Alps in Switzerland. --Sitacuisses (talk) 09:20, 26 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
