My name is Victor Grigas and I'm a Storyteller at the Wikimedia Foundation. We're exploring new ways to explain why Wikipedia is so special and we’ve started a Wikipedia Stories Project, where we’re chronicling the inspiring stories of the Wikipedia community, especially editors and active contributors in the movement like you. I'll be traveling to Wikimania next month to collect stories for our 2011 Fundraiser. While there I'd love the chance to meet with you and hear your thoughts about Wikipedia. We’ll have a schedule of available times for you to sign up if you’re interested, but right now, we’d like to make the initial contact to gauge your interest. Please let me know by emailing me at vgrigas@wikimedia.org or responding on my talk page.

thank you,

Seeking Wikipedians in Africa

[edit]

Hello Xelawafs! My name is Aaron Muszalski. Like Victor, I work in the Community Department here at the Wikimedia Foundation. Thank you for sharing your story with us!

I am currently planning a possible visit to Africa next month, and would greatly appreciate it if you could recommend other Kenyan Wikipedians to whom you think I should speak. We're especially looking for active editors, either from Kenya or other African countries, or people with interesting and compelling stories to share about their use of Wikipedia or the role that Wikipedia plays in their country.

You can email me at amuszalski@wikimedia.org. Thank you! Aaron (WMF) (talk) 03:14, 21 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania Scholars

[edit]

Dear Alex,

I work on the Global Development team at Wikimedia Foundation. The Wikimedia Foundation aims to promote Wikimania 2012 and encourage contributors to apply for scholarship opportunities for next year’s event. You have been selected as one of the people I'd like to feature in a short bio write-up because of the areas you've greatly contributed to the Wiki-ecosystem. Based on the survey you filled out agreeing to provide your insight on the experience, I drafted a short write-up from your submission. As mentioned on the survey, the goal of the bio is to make the scholarship selection process more transparent by providing examples of the types of candidates who have been selected in the past.

If you would be so kind as to:

1) confirm that we may feature your bio by emailing me at syap@wikimedia.org

We would only list your Username (not your full name).

2) Review your bio below and submit any edits to it

3) Confirm that it’s fine to post a picture with your bio

4) (Optional) share a photo with me (syap@wikimedia.org), personal or one taken at Wikimania (via Commons with the link) by November 24th, 2011 (Thursday), that would be great (the sooner the better). We really appreciate your contributions to the community and helping us make this a greater global resource!

Please review this and let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

(Feel free to send me your edits)

“The best part of the conference was meeting the attendees, sharing ideas, experiences, making new friends and acquaintances. I took a lot from this to share back home! Contributing to Wikimedia has become an important part of my life and so I have ample time set aside to participate in various projects. My best takeaways as a contributor are meeting, sharing and working with the great people of this community, empowering and changing people’s lives through the work we do.”

Wikipedia in schools in rural Ghana

[edit]

Hi Alex

I read about your work on the Wikimedia blog, great work. I have a friend (not a Wikipedian) going to rural Ghana in a few weeks, I may be able to get her to take some USBs or DVDs with Wikipedia on. Would this be useful? Would this be any more useful than just posting them?

Thanks

--Mrjohncummings (talk) 16:26, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it will be more useful than posting them. Post tends to get lost in Africa so whenever you have someone travelling here, sending them with the USBs/DVDs is probably the best. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have anymore questions around this.

Contests

[edit]

User:Dr. Blofeld has created Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/Contests. The idea is to run a series of contests/editathons focusing on each region of Africa. He has spoken to Wikimedia about it and $1000-1500 is possible for prize money. As someone who has previously expressed interest in African topics, would you be interested in contributing to one or assisting draw up core article/missing article lists? He says he's thinking of North Africa for an inaugural one in October. If interested please sign up in the participants section of the Contest page, thanks.♦ --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 01:39, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
