BT Wikipedia

Hi trying to help update the wikipedia page for BT. There are numerous articles citing information that is being consistently removed by user Fctchkr. Here are links to information substiantiating all (prior) updates. I am going to revert back to last edits. Fctchkr removes my citations (and those of others) consistently.

Also it seems Fctchkr is posting personal information that violate freedom of privacy including location of BT's home. Thank you

Here are links that are being disregarded and removed as valid citations :

http://www.apple.com/uk/pro/profiles/bt (In this one in bottom right sidebar author says "BT's signature production technique" http://www.wired.com/underwire/2010/02/bt-these-hopeful-machines/ http://www.californiachronicle.com/articles/yb/141488552 tp://www.wired.com/underwire/2010/02/bt-these-hopeful-machines/

Thank you —Preceding unsigned comment added by MathandArt (talkcontribs) 10:22, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Please see the discussion area for the BT article. I have provided my reasons for all edits. In many cases bad citations/links were provided and I removed those. I have further edited the article to remove what appears to be advertising related links and material that are not industry accepted terms. I have not put anything into this article in terms of BT's home that is not already listed in the article. As you will see I've been monitoring this article for well over a year now and apply the concept of goodwill to my updates and will discuss any items in the discussion area. I would love the input of a non-involved party weighing in on the validity of these links as I have no desire to continue having my edits reverted with no discussion taking place as to why. Thanks. Excluding redirects

Your tools are wonderful. Thank you. But I have a problem with the redirects. I tried to link my list of articles to my personal page. It almost worked fine. The trouble is that, although I tried to exclude the redirect pages ( by using using , namespace=0&redirects=noredirects in the address), the redirect pages are also displayed. It is funny; when the address is linked from the contributions page the redirects are filtered out. When the very same address is linked from another page, the redirects are not filtered out. I am rather confused. Any suggestions ? Nedim Ardoğa (talk) 07:33, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Like a boss

Greetings X! I hope you are well. I just wanted to talk to you about your closure of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Boss Audio. As you know, administrators are obliged to give weight to some arguments more than others, depending on policy, but also to regard the discussion's consensus. In this case, I feel like the discussion might have been better given a 'no consensus' closure. Maybe I should just nominate this for deletion review so that people who are smarter (than me) can make the final call (and so that you can laugh at me sooner once your close is speedily endorsed). Let me know your thoughts, and best regards to you! Arbitrarily0 (talk) 17:09, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

I would have no objections to a deletion review. I did consider a no-consensus closure, and I decided that a delete was probably more valid (at the time). I do see what you're getting at though, and it would be fine to let DRV decide. (X! · talk)  · @837  ·  19:05, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
well, if you are considering a non-consensus, and since that is the likely result of a deletion review, why not save everyone the work involved in it? My weak keep , btw, means that I think it should be kept, but that I don't really want to get into an argument about it. DGG ( talk ) 20:21, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
Alright, well I've opened a discussion at Wikipedia:Deletion review/Log/2010 March 3#Boss Audio. Thanks greatly for your civility! Arbitrarily0 (talk) 21:34, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Your close of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Magyar Rádióamatõr Szövetség

Might I as you reconsider the closing you did of this Article. As you may have noted from several other National Amateur Radio organizations you have closed lately, that consensus is that National organizations _are_ notable. You may wish to read the relevent conversation at Talk:International Amateur Radio Union to note how the others all closed. And you have to admit, from a purely numbers viewpoint, your !close was not with the consensus. Exit2DOS CtrlAltDel 02:13, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

Your kind attention is needed on Important Matters

X! I am new wikipedian and I read your profile and other details, though couldn't read all Amins pages, however, I smell you are a nice and cooperative fellow (not to fly you high but its my own observation). I want to bring some important matters into your kind knowledge. As a new wikipedian I feel that some old wikipedians are being 'rude' 'bully' and 'offensive' with newbies. New-cons are enthusiastic, passionate and want to contribute more in most cases. But unfortunately old wikipedians making the road rocky, just to secure points. I wanted to paste here such discussion details going on among us. However, to avoid your page to be lengthy I request you to read last section of my talk page User_talk:Luckyaim#Disagree_with_deletion_proposal_of_my_images and please give your worthy opinion along with your 'words for guidance'. Your a bit attention can save many new wikipedians time and energy (including me) that is being wasted in useless issues. Thanks Lucky's Heaven ----- (Talk to Lucky) 12:14, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

It may seem like people may be rude and biting to you, but from what I can see, they are absolutely right. At the moment, it looks like your understanding of copyright laws is a little flawed, and I think you need to brush up on our policies. Even if you took the picture yourself, if it is of a copyrighted work, it is copyrighted. I'm sorry to have provided you with a response you weren't hoping for, but with copyright, it is incredibly important to enforce it because there are legal consequences if something was done wrong. There's been a discussion at RfA which has generated some interest in tweaking the language of the RfA/RfB report. Adminstats request

I asked this at Template Talk:Adminstats, but it is probably better here:

How do I use the style? I have a style template I want to use at User:Phantomsteve/Adminstats/Style2 and change the final line of Template:Adminstats/Phantomsteve to read |style=User:Phantomsteve/Adminstats/Style2}} - but when the bot updated it, that line was changed back to the default - is there anyway to get it to keep the style I want, or do I have to change it every time the bot updates?

Ignore this, as I realise I just use the style as a parameter! -- PhantomSteve/talk|contribs\ 19:55, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

Also:

  1. Is it possible to have a line added at the end of the individual Adminstats page (e.g. Template:Adminstats/Phantomsteve which says something along the lines of Updated by SoxBot at 08:34, 13 March 2010 (UTC)? As they aren't updated every 24 hours, then at least anyone looking at the stats will know how old they are! - I have manually done it on my Adminstats page in an edit a minute ago!
  2. Is it possible to use the 'bot to update Adminbars as well? As the content is the same as Adminstats apart from the first and final lines, then I would assume that it would be reasonably simple to do? (ps: and if so, could an "Updated by SoxBox at..." be added as well?)

Finally, congrats on the 'cratship :D

Hi,

I'm a member of WP:ESSAY C/C, and we're looking for a solution that will crawl essays, slap our WikiProject banner on those that don't have one, and assign them an importance rating based on how many incoming links they have (or update said rating if it has already been assigned). Hi X!, In the last couple of days, I added links to the website of Nema (www.nema.be), a Belgian organization of patients with a neuromuscular disease (NMD). I added this link in both dutch as well as english WIKI pages, because a lot of patients and their families in Belgium and the Netherlands look up information on English WIKI pages. Apparently, I triggered the linkspam filter 80 by doing these additions so quickly and on so many (around 20 I guess) pages. However, we really provide information for all diseases described on the pages where I inserted the links. To proof this, please have a look at http://www.nema.be/index.php?cat=nma&p=lijst_nma , where you can find a list with all diseases we have information on. Since I am a WIKI newbie, please let me know if I did something wrong in the way I added these links. I really hope the links may stay, because we surely have relevant information for patients and their family and a lot of them look up info via Wikipedia.

Looking forward to your answer,

All the best, --Patrik claes (talk) 12:30, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

I do like the newer one (looks clean); except, I would kindly ask that you add the user logged actions to the newer counter before switching over (if you decide to do so). Thanks again for the tool. Kindly Calmer Waters 07:35, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

I removed the log actions for three reasons:
  1. They slowed down the tool for quite a few seconds,
  2. The code used to generate them was a mess, and
  3. I am planning on making a special log counter that duplicates the functions of the edit counter, but for logs. Part of the rewrite of the entire edit counter code was that it would be portable, meaning I could make a log counter fairly easily. With the old code, it was very difficult.
If it turns out that it was too popular to remove, I'll go ahead and put it in, but it's a lot faster and cleaner without it. (X! · talk)  · @621  ·  13:54, 21 March 2010 (UTC)
That makes alot of sense. Well, thank you for taking the time to explain that for me. I'm am only beginning to scratch the surface of the vast intricacies involved in the making and maintaining of such tools, but understand that even the things that "appear" easy, are in reality usually far from it, so thanks again. bot username reports

Sometimes the bot is reporting names, such as User:Purist productions with the comment that the report was delayed till the user edited, when in fact it has not. (I even checked the edit filter for attempted edits the last time I saw it) Beeblebrox (talk) 18:54, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Your new edit counter

It looks great but maybe it would be nice if you added the amount of edits on each type of page (eg. article 654 edits, 76.5%) to make it clearer. Apart from that, well done--Pianoplonkers (talkcontribs) 15:13, 21 March 2010 (UTC)

Done. (X! · talk)  · @694  ·  15:40, 21 March 2010 (UTC)
  • The counter's great; I especially like the popups and the fact that it fills the entire screen. I'm aware that this might slow down the counter, but is it possible to add "top edited" for editors with 100,000+ edits (or wherever the cutoff point is)? Overall, it's a superb tool. Airplaneman talk 02:29, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
  • I like the new edit counter. "©2010 Soxred93" Why is it copyrighted? Also, why doesn't it say X! rather than Soxred93? And what happened to the log actions? NERDYSCIENCEDUDE (✉ msgchanges) 02:40, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

Pianoplonkers, I think I've fixed what you asked for. Airplaneman, no. Even if it does load a little slower, it is also very resource intensive, and I must only use my fair share of resources on the Toolserver, as it is a shared server. NSD: I think you have a slight misunderstanding of copyright. Everything that anyone creates is copyrighted, under the idea of Natural copyright. By adding a © to the page, it is just indicating to people that it is indeed copyrighted, for people who may not have realized that before. Additionally, if someone were to steal my design or code, it proves that I was indeed the rightful creator in the event that I decided to sue. Soxred93 used to be my username here, it was the username in which I got a toolserver account, in which I passed RfA, and spent 3 months as an admin under that name. I was renamed to X! in August 2008, long after I started my toolserver account. It's impossible to rename accounts, so I kept it as Soxred93 for continuity. As for log actions, please see the penultimate section on this page. (X! · talk)  · @213  ·  04:06, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

Ah yes, if it's copyrighted, then would that mean it would be impossible to upload a free screenshot to Commons. Afterall, what's wrong with free and open-source? NERDYSCIENCEDUDE (✉ msgchanges) 04:17, 22 March 2010 (UTC)
Good job. I like both...Modernist (talk) 04:18, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

If you click the username on the new counter, and it has a space, a "+" is put in place of that. Nubio^2 might be dead, I don't know though. Just some notes. -- /MWOAP|Notify Me\ 21:52, 22 March 2010 (UTC)

Nubio2 moved to a new server, I'll fix that. With the +'s, that seems to be a fixable issue too. (X! · talk)  · @497  ·  10:55, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

The percentages seem to be a little off, by a few tenths. I noticed it when comparing the old one with the new one. Before this post, mainspace edits showed 53.33% on the old (which is what my calculator tells me) and 53.41% on the new. —Akrabbimtalk 03:47, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

I noticed that, I'm unsure about why that's happening. I'll go have a look at that. (X! · talk)  · @497  ·  10:55, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

The counter looks nice :) But, I think it would be nice if there was an uncollapse all option. Also, is it possible to add brackets, on the deleted edits, that would show the number of the edits that were deleted by the same editor himself? I mean, I have reverted many of my edits and it's ruining my stats :P Oh, and when the tooltip is showing up when look at stats by hovering the cursor over a month's stats, it would be nice if there was some way to add color to it to distinguish which color is which, without having to go up to the color legend. --JokerXtreme (talk) 10:48, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

"Deleted edits" does not mean "reverted edits". It is ones that have been on a page that was deleted. (such as tagging a page for CSD) (X! · talk)  · @497  ·  10:55, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Edit Counter idea

Is it possible to have an edit counter add-on that used the size of the edits as another factor? My understanding is that the edit counter, as great a tool as it is, does not take into consideration whether edits are minor or made by bots. Nor does it look at the size of the edit. So if editor A just changed a spelling, and editor B added a hundred words to an article, both edit counts would be considered identical while the actual "improvement" value is nowhere the same. The usefullness of adding the size of the edit would also be a great value to "Revision history statistics" in an article's "history" page. Just an idea, but I'm sure it would be a lot of work to incorporate. --Wikiwatcher1 (talk) 18:10, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

First of all, this would not be necessary. Edit counters are supposed to be impartial when counting edits, they must give exact figures. It's the responsibility of the person behind the screen to take the results with a grain of salt. Secondly, the size difference is not stored in the database, so it would not be possible either. Sorry. (X! · talk)  · @851  ·  19:24, 25 March 2010 (UTC)
I would recommend a minor word change at the bottom. It currently has "Sorry, but in order to consume my fair share of toolserver resources, Top Edited Articles are disabled for users with over 45000 edits." It implies that somehow disabling it for users with 45,000+ edits helps you consume some alloted amount. I'd recommend rewording to something with the effect of "...in order to consume only my fair share..." Also, can you configure it to display the number of minor edits? I'm not sure if that's do-able, but that would approximate the request above. Useight (talk) 22:29, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Possible loopholes in the edit counter opt-in

Not sure if the tool considers these or not:

  1. Any admin can create the EditCounterOptIn.js file for any user.
  2. A user who has an account on Meta with a given username is not necessarily the same user with that username on the English Wikipedia.

TUSC, for example, requires that the user make an edit to his talk page with a specific edit summary. PleaseStand (talk) 17:27, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

New edit counter: show/hide issues

Hello! I've been using your new edit counter. I like it! It has a much more usable interface. The one issue I've noticed with it so far is that upon clicking "show" in the top-edited articles statistics, the "hide" link is shifted right to the end of the longest page title in that particular list. That makes it rather frustrating for someone (like me) who just wants to take a quick glance at it, clicking it, and then clicking again to hide it. It would be nice if it could keep still. Thanks for looking at this issue, and thanks for a great edit counter! :-) Cheers!☮Ecw.Technoid.Dweeb | contributions | talk 11:38, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

If you want screenshots, I can provide them. Cheers!☮Ecw.Technoid.Dweeb | contributions | talk 11:44, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for making this counter; it's such a useful tool. I just came here to note the same issue that I find is already mentioned here: the jumping show/hide links. It would be a lot more intuitive to have them stay in the same place. I would also second the request, in the section above, for an "uncollapse all" option of some sort. Princess Lirin (talk) 01:18, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the idea, both of you. Unfortunately, I am not very good at Javascript (The show/hide code is the one used for navboxes here), so I may have to outsource for help. I will have a look at it, though. (X! · talk)  · @493  ·  10:50, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Just so you know, they are staying in the same place now, but they are stuck on displaying "hide" (the lists are shown), and clicking the "hide" links doesn't do anything... :-P Good luck! Cheers!☮Ecw.Technoid.Dweeb | contributions | talk 01:28, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

Edit Counter

Hello, I really like your new edit counter; I would also like to mention that the color scheme needs to be changed. I'm tired of red, yellow, green, blue and pink. --White Trillium (talk) 04:58, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your comment. The problem is, when there have to be over 20 colors, my choices for colors which are easy to recognize are extremely limited. As such, there is very little ability to change the colors. If you could come up with 20 unique colors that work equally well, I would be happy to put them in. (X! · talk)  · @491  ·  10:46, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
Sorry for the blanking the page, my computer is really slow. So what colors would you like me pick and what colors are not suitable. --White Trillium (talk) 23:50, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
Anything that is visible. (X! · talk)  · @039  ·  23:55, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Hmmm... Please *don't* change them — I have become familiar with the colours and I associate them with their corresponding categories (red=article, yellow=user, purple=user-talk, &c.) ;-) Thanks. Cheers!☮Ecw.Technoid.Dweeb | contributions | talk 01:38, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I've translated the new opt-in message to German for your editconter:

EN: Graphs have been set to opt-in as a result of a single complaint resulting in what is essentially a cease-and-desist letter from the toolserver admins. If you want to see graphs, please create User:Wikidienst/EditCounterOptIn.js with any content. Alternatively, you can create meta:User:Wikidienst/EditCounterGlobalOptIn.js to opt-in across all Wikimedia wikis.

Edit Count Parser Function

Hiya X!! Would you be able to create an edit count parser function? It would come in mighty handy. Thanks. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 288° 13' 15" NET 19:12, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

I did a few months ago, and it was reverted. (X! · talk)  · @884  ·  20:13, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
You did? Curious. How comes I didn't come across it? Even more puzzling though, why did they revert it considering that these two pages exist? Are they targeting you in particular or something? Sounds fishy to me! Set Sail For The Seven Seas 358° 4' 45" NET 23:52, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
One other thing, do you still have the source code? and is it programmed in PHP? Maybe we could reattempt to get it up and running. Set Sail For The Seven Seas 270° 1' 30" NET 18:00, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Edit counter

On my edit counter page, there was a 'User has not yet opted in. If you want to see graphs, please create User:Bejinhan/EditCounterOptIn.js with any content.' Upon clicking the link, I was directed to here. Is something wrong? Also, I want to see the graphs. How do I go about creating 'content' on the js page? Thanks! BejinhanTalk 06:11, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

Oh, and why was the edit counter removed just because of 1 editor. Seriously! There are many of us out there who use it. Sorry, but I really find this frustrating and not to mention annoying too. BejinhanTalk 06:15, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
(tps)paste User:Bejinhan/EditCounterOptIn.js in your search box or just click on this and it will start the page you need to optin. then type anything and save. then you should be good to go. Calmer Waters 06:19, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) Regardless of whether it was 1 editor or 1000, if the toolserver admins say to stop using the toolserver in some manner, you follow that request. And it's not entirely unreasonable – I don't agree with it, but I see where they're coming from. --Shirik (Questions or Comments?) 06:28, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
It wasn't removed because of 1 single editor. The wish to remove comes from a discussion at our village pump (perma). It has also been discussed before. See also the discussion at the Administrators' noticeboard (perma). Looks like the German community is a little more concerned about aggregating data than others are. Maybe our laws in that field are stricter too, I don't know. Also note that we have an opt-in at our List of Wikipedians by number of edits instead of the possibility to opt out like over here. --95.88.79.67 (talk) 17:44, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
It has been noted many, many times that only people from dewiki have ever complained. However, no matter how many times it is stated, the admins refuse to change their stance on the issue. (X! · talk)  · @804  ·  18:17, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
It's sad, but I guess despite its limitations and slowness, WikiChecker will be getting a lot more use now. --Tothwolf (talk) 04:12, 27 March 2010 (UTC)

Please let me add my thanks for your work on this, and my dismay at the silliness created by others, along with the many similar comments above. I've gotten my own opt-in js file working fine, but before coming to your user talk, I was confused by the wording of the message at the tool display. Maybe it's just me, but I thought I'd pass it along in case anyone else might be confused. I'm referring to where it says "with any content". When I first saw that, I though that it meant that I had to create my own monthly graph and so forth, containing "any content" that I wanted it to display, which dismayed me for obvious reasons. After reading here at your talk, I realized that it simply means that it doesn't matter what the content of the js file is, so long as it exists. Perhaps you might want to consider changing the wording from "with any content" to something along the lines of "; the content of the file does not matter" or something like that. Just a thought. Thanks again. --Tryptofish (talk) 20:18, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Didn't know if you saw this on irc, but here it is again (the case regarding the suicide threat). The editor in question's name was The Legendary Sky Attacker. Auntie E. (talk) 19:14, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Not a bug here either; it looks great. Why show all edits as the "bottom line" rather than all-minus-deleted as per custom? And what are deleted edits anyway? Sarah777 (talk) 22:10, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
Deleted edits are those that were made to a page that was subsequently deleted - CSD noms are the most common, or following an AfD of an article you worked on. I think it makes more sense this way - Live+Deleted=Total. ~ Amory (utc) 17:31, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

New Edit count tool

Just an opinion: I like the default expansion of the article counts in the old tool. Could you add a parameter in the EditCounterOptIn.js maybe?
