Diketene

The article is all about one specific compound, with formula C4H4O2. It mentions substituted diketenes in passing, but I'm sure that benzene also mentions substituted benzenes in passing and that doesn't make it "not a chemical compound". --Itub (talk) 09:24, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

Petrus Jacobus Kipp

I was thinking of writing an article about Petrus Jacobus Kipp to turn the red link in Kipp apparatus into a blue one. I found that information in English is relatively limited, but there is already a long article about him in the Dutch Wikipedia (nl:Petrus Jacobus Kipp). I don't know if this kind of project interests you, but if it does perhaps you could translate the article into English? • As far as I know, indeed Piet is still alive. I recall to have even found him (last time I looked to fill the stub article) in the phonebook for a not far away town. The date of 1926-05-09 is the date he used in his autobiography, where he did not identify himself (Codename 'J') about the war years. I have not found corroboration that he really himself is born then. Creating an FA out of it, is daunting. It would be different if I actually knew him personally: then I'd simply would visit him and ask his life's story. And no, there's not enough public information to make this article even B-class. • Hi Rifleman, I think the remark was a surreptitious compliment after a spur of your edits. I probably did some re-rating, including the aluminium hydride article, and was nicely impressed with it, so I included the recommendation to look at the A-Class requirements suggesting that you'd go on with it. • Hi Eleven even. Yes, all meta-information about an article should not be in the article itself, but elsewhere, mostly on the talkpage. I do WikiProject Chemicals (aka WP:Chem) assessment for several years now, actually, our WikiProject was one of the first to do so. You just need a good grasp of the wikiproject subject to estimate the articles importance in the field, and reasonable experience in WP to assess the current quality status of the article. I saw your recent post at WT:CHEM. I've gone through some articles as you've suggested, and I think the following may not be deserving of a stub-class:

• meta-Chloroperoxybenzoic acid: agree, Start now
• Butanone: has only one section and that isn't even chemistry: keep at Stub
• Caesium_hydroxide: not even any section: keep at stub
• Diethanolamine: Not enough chemistry for a start
• Polybutadiene: agree, Start now
• Trisodium phosphate: agree, Start now. Although very meagre in no of sections, there's enough chemistry is the paragraph to warrant Start.

Hi Rifleman, the important point to notice is that I'm assessing against the WP:Chem assessment rules, and not giving a general article assessment. Indeed the articles that you point out are generally speaking beyond stub status, but regarind the Chemicals content, most are very stubby. Yet, I upgraded three on your recommendations. Bisphenol A assessment

Hi Wimvandorst. I noticed that you recently updated the assessment of Bisphenol A from start class to B. I'm wondering if you can tell me what it would take to get it up to A class. I've been around WP for a while, working on and improving articles that interest me, but I've never paid much attention to article ratings nor I have ever before made a specific effort to move an article up the quality scale. But anyways, I've put a bit of work into this article recently, so I'm thinking it might be nice to get it to A class if possible. Please let me know what you think it needs. Thanks. • Hi Yilloslime, I was off-line for some time, so sorry that I didn't answer any sooner. The article assessment work that I do is specifically for WP:Chem, so there you can find the improvement suggestions, e.g., in it's assessment rules or in example articles, already A-Class. Specifically for the Bisphenol A article, I would recommend:
• more chemistry, notably in the Synthesis section. Better even to improve it up to a full Chemistry section.
• The Use section could do with fleshing out
• Production numbers (tonnes per annum-line data, etc)
• Adding information to a new Safety section, providing handling recommendation and such. The other health info could fall under such a section too.

Thanks for the advice. Production numbers are already in there--is there something more you are looking for? As for chemistry, I'm currently without ChemDraw, so I can't add much of anything useful. However, the most import rxn of BPA, at least terms of production volume, is its polymerization into polycarbonate plastic, and that rxn is already covered in great detail over at Polycarbonate, so it's seems redundant to go into detail on it in the BPA article. The notable missing thing is chemistry! Much more can be said about the chemical (and physical) properties of the product. The formation of polycarbonate is just one of the possible reaction products. Production data is IMHO rather limited. You could (if data is available, of course): is it growing, declining, why, two which market sold (or captive use), how did it do over the years, how much into which application, etc. Also the other applications. Boy Scouting (Boy Scouts of America) GA Sweeps Review: On Hold

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria and I'm specifically going over all of the "Culture and Society" articles. I have reviewed Boy Scouting (Boy Scouts of America) and believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. In reviewing the article, I have found there are several issues that need to be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I have left this message on your talk page since you have significantly edited the article (based on using this article history tool). Please consider helping address the several points that I listed on the talk page of the article, which shouldn't take too long to fix with the assistance of multiple editors. GA-Class on WP:Chem

Hi Wim, I'm a bit confused by your comments at Ammonia. Our assessment scheme certainly predates WP:GA, and a "good article" is not necessarily A-class, but it seems silly not to include the Wikipedia:good articles in our assessment. Ammonia is a case in point: until yesterday, I hadn't even realised it was on the good articles list, although I'm aware that the FA bigots have blocked it three times now, more fool them. Martin makes the point very well when he says that GA is a different assessment from the WikiProject assessment, looking at different points (in particular, the adherence to WP guidelines, but not to the obsessive level that it's taken on WP:FAC). If our assessment are meant to be pro-active in encouraging users to improve articles (both scientifically and in their adherence to house style), we ought to indicate those articles which are both A-class and GA. We already use this data on Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Chemicals articles by quality statistics, and indeed a general refusal to list articles as GA standard might possibly restrict the coverage of chemistry on WP1.0 (although I'm sure Martin will fight against such a consequence!) • Hi PC, indeed our assessment scheme predates the GA-classification. It was even used as the basis for the more general article assessment scheme currently being used by many other wikiprojects. It has always been a well-balanced method to indicate article quality within our WikiProject. As I strictly assess articles only against WP:Chem article standard (e.g., an A-Class article in the Biology wikiproject can easily be Stub-class in WP:Chem), there is IMHO no need to add additional levels, such as GA-class or the newer C-Class either. As such I'm adhering to the scheme that we agreed on way back when, and there're no GA or C Classes in that. Simple. Actually I merely see the GA-label and the FA-label as certification that an article is really a well-done B-Class or A-Class, as I understand Martin advocates too. Perhaps we'll have to make it something like a label in the project template, e.g.: {{chemicals|core|class=b|label=GA|importance=mid}}?? Wim van Dorst (talk) 20:51, 1 October 2008 (UTC).

Re: The Robert Baden Powell entry.

I'm afraid I can't 'read' Wiki very well so can not tell if this is from your main entry or if it is a section anyone else has edited.

On the page it is mentioned that Baden Powell went to Rose Hill School in Tunbridge Wells. If you click on Rose Hill School it goes to an entry about Rose Hill School in Gloucestershire.

Golden Arrow

Dear Mr Wim van Dorst,

I am a polish scout, my scout troop is writing the history of polish Golden Arrow given to the polish delegacy during the 3rd Jamboree. We contacted our british friends and we found some sources, but we still do not know some basic things. I am writing to you, because probably you know something more than we do. The main problem is - how did exactly the Closing Ceremony look like? I mean - did Bi-Pi give Golden Arrows at this ceremony or afterwards? How many of GA were given? Did every national contingent get one or not? We know that Polish wer given one, but we are not sure if it was One of those four - sent to the West, East, North and South. Maybe there were others presented after the ceremony? We have read many stories about the Jamboree of 1929, but we still do not know, what exactly happened. If you have any other information about the Golden Arrows we are also very interested.

• Hi Kasia, the good description, apart from the 3rd World Scout Jamboree article, is in the Pine Tree web archive with lots of pictures, which we can't use in Wikipedia as they copyrighted. As far as I have found, there were four Golden Arrows, and they were handed out by B-P during the closing ceremony, where he (and other notables) were on a dais in the middle of the Wheel of Friendship, and gave them to be handed into the four compass directions. I assume that they ended up at the last group on each end, who kept them. I've never actually seen one, but expect that there are really only those four. • Hi Beagel, yes, indeed, I quite agree with Tony and Sandy (who are way better editors than I). I left some very measurable peerreviewer script output on the talk page, to show also some very clear points to work on. Don't underestimate these things, by the way: really look into the peerreviewer recommendations and do scrutinously as recommended. I'll see whether I can edit a bit too. • There's not much more information readily available about the Delftse Zwervers, so I'm not optimistic about any improvement spree coming out of me. Perhaps Egel has attended it? Transition metals

I've noticed that wp considers Zn, Cd and Hg as transition metals in spite of the fact that the common definition between chemists do not include them (see i.e. Cotton Wilkinson, Advanced Inorganic Chemistry, 3rd Edition, 1977, a book that my university teacher used to reference as the bible of Inorganic Chemistry). I've also joined the discussion but I would like to have that information corrected into metals of the d-block. Please note that most of the chemists and teachers consider that a mistake and would rank the related articles consequently. I would be grateful if you could give or ask for contributions on the subject. Please notice that many other projects rely on en:wp so that this information is spread and translated worlwide. Gilwell Ada's Hoeve

Maybe it is beter to rename/merge that article to one about all "labelterreinen" Scouting Nederland Label Campsites. What do you think? --Egel _Reaction? 12:57, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

• If there isn't any other article about label campsites, I think certainly Gilwell Ada's Hoeve and probably Gilwell St Walrick each warrant an article of their own. A cover-all article about label sites is an interesting topic too, but IMHO Gilwell Ada's Hoeve stands out well above the general ones: it is by far the first one, it has hosted the Gilwell Woodbadge training, and it is also one of the largest.
