Thanks for your response. As far as the book's copyright having expired, I'm not sure that is accurate. If, indeed, the book was copyrighted back in 1976 and if a copyright notice was included in the book, the copyright wouldn't expire until 95 years after the date of publication which would be 2071 (see this chart). Essentially, I believe that the only way text taken verbatim from this book can be used on Wikipedia is for the copyright holder (your society, I think?) to make a statement that releases all rights to the work and irrevocably places the work in the public domain. This would mean that anyone who wishes to use the work in any way (even for commercial purposes) could do so. Are you actually willing to forever release all rights to the work?
