Region?

[edit]

We need to review the terms used for various types of regions of Norway, esp. the current erroneous term "landscape", but also landsdel and tettsted. See for instance Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Norway#.22Landscape.22. -- Egil 16:10, 11 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. Would appreciate if you’d take the lead on proposing the approach. I’m of a rather retiring personality who finds some of the debates one must go through in the group dynamics of a Wiki sap my energy. It has taken me a while just to come back to Wiki – and I need to focus on making some contributions in uncontroversial areas for a while. Thanks! Williamborg 21:46, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Nice job done by Egil! Since this is history, I'm moving it to there on the 24th. Williamborg 03:05, 24 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Page Blanking

[edit]

On 24-Jan, you blanked Sogndalen. Blanking pages is generally considered a bad idea. In cases of creating an article under a misspelling, it's better to redirect the misspelling to the correct article. You are probably not the only one who will make that spelling mistake. I've redirected this article to Songdalen. Thanks! -- JLaTondre 01:49, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. More extensive response at JLaTondre's page. Williamborg 03:13, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I provided a link to the directions in my first post. They are at Wikipedia:Redirect. If you still have questions, let me know. -- JLaTondre 13:33, 26 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, you did. Thanks! Williamborg

Norweigan county maps

[edit]

Thank you for the kind comments on the maps. I am doing a major project at work - drilling down each country to the 1st, 2nd, even 3rd administrative level, and updating a huge database (english names, local names, the works). When I got to the Wiki section on Norway, I noticed that there were so many counties without maps as a guide, so I wanted to help contribute to the articles. I appreciate all of the comments - and I will strive to improve the coastline detail (mine came from a database that was not quite focused on detail) and the alpha ordering in the future (I noticed how Norweigans actually alphabetize the Ø and å characters differently, so I want to improve the maps so the lists are in Norge alpha-order). I am open for doing district maps - the big thing will be the need for source data for me to use, no matter what language (as long as I can decipher the borders). Rarelibra 00:37 27JAN2006

You're quite welcome for the kind comment; it was sincere. Since the Wikipedia is a voluntary thing, I appreciate the work of folks like you who concentrate on improving basic information. And as a visual person, I really value maps.
As a possible aid for your effort, I would recommend the German site at German map of Aust-Agder or Veiatlas Norge as possible sources. From the German site you can transfer to other counties of Norway as well. Or if you can’t get access, I’d be happy to print as a pdf & email to your. And if you’d like to post DRAFT versions on your talk page, I’m sure several of our active Norway contributors would be happy to review and comment. Williamborg 22:00, 27 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming districts

[edit]

It's entirely possible that I haven't paid attention, but can you point me to the discussion about using the indefinite form for such places as Gudbrandsdalen? --Leifern 22:15, 29 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, I'm guilty of "going off half-cocked". Added a section titled Gudbrandsdal or Gudbrandsdalen to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Norway. In summary, I suggest we simply use the form on the Districts of Norway page to document our consensus usage. But, as always, i'm willing to be convinced it there is a better solution. Williamborg 02:21, 30 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. It just seemed to be getting unwieldy. By the way, I'm not sure I agree with how glacial origin is optional in your revision of our definition of fjord. I will try to prompt some discussion of this on the article's talk page. -- Avenue 10:38, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Noted. I'll discuss on the fjord talk page. Williamborg 13:54, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The right Vang church
The wrong Vang church

..we discussed the Vang church. And I told you I was sure it was the wrong Vang church? The right one is on the left side and the correct is on the right side. Uh.. The one on the right is whats left of my brain.. — John Erling Blad (no) 23:39, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Probably why sailors use port and starboard.
Rather an interesting right church to port (although not as interesting in architecture as the 'wrong' one to starboard). Do we know when it was built and whether is has an interesting history? Williamborg 03:22, 24 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There are pretty decant litterature on most of the norwegian churches. Problem is, it is so many of them so it is necessary to limit the number to describe. And if you remove some of them from a list of interesting churches, other people adds them back in. Often without realizing the reason why they was removed in the first place. "Interesting enough to describe" often turns out to be read like "church in my neighbourhood". — John Erling Blad (no) 20:28, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Subpages

[edit]

I noticed you have User_talk:Williamborg-1 and User_talk:Williamborg-2. This isn't the proper way to create subpages - those are the user pages for the (presumably non-existent) accounts User:Williamborg-1 and User:Williamborg-2. Subpages of your userspace would be something like User:Williamborg/subpage or User talk:Williamborg/archive. These are part of your user space and connect with it. You should move your subpages back into your own user space (click on the [move] button at the top of the page) and then tag the old pages for speedy deletion - otherwise someone registering User:Williamborg-1 might be very confused ;)

If you need any help or clarification, please feel free to ask me for help. Guettarda 18:36, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent. Now I understand how it is done. Thanks - Williamborg 14:09, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

History of Jämtland

[edit]

You have edited the text on Jamtlandic such that it now says:

"Jämtland was originally settled by fugitives from Trøndelag after Harald Fairhair united Norway in the 9th century, became part of Norway during the reign of Haakon I in the 10th century and remained part of Norway until the 17th century."
(Claimed source: Gjerset, Knut (1915). History of the Norwegian People, Volumes I & II, The MacMillan Company.)

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't history say that king Sverrir conquered Jämtland in 1178? How can he have conquered Jämtland if it already was a part of Norway? No, Jämtland had been an independent nation ever since 9th century when the trönds colonised the area, though being allied with Norway or Sweden at different periods throughout Viking age depending on what they found most appropriate.

BTW, I'll completely re-write the article on Jamtlandic so there's no point in adding stuff. I'll probably remove the history part completely, since it is quite likely that the theory of a tröndish migration to Jämtland is not very relevant (the migration probably consisted of some few households setling near people who they were acquainted with since generations), though the connection to Tröndelag is important.

hi williamborg. i see youve been making a lot of articles about norwegian geography. did you know that you can use {{norway-geo-stub}} rather than {{geo-stub}} on them? :) BL Lacertae - kiss the lizard 06:11, 6 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Population centres in Lunner

[edit]

I see your point. Although there are other population centres in Lunner, such as Grindvoll and Oppdalen, they may not be as cemented and formalised as the rest. I guess I just wanted the sentence to read better. Alter/revert/change or delete at will! --Grumpy444grumpy 15:21, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually just checking to make sure you meant what you wrote. You did. Looks good to me. Takk - Williamborg 21:35, 11 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Den vakre

[edit]

"The term «den vakre» exceeds both my Norwegian vocabulary and my dictionaries. The name Frier comes from the old Norse and means «den vakre» or the watchman? Any help would be appreciated. Williamborg 23:27, 11 March 2006 (UTC)"[reply]

Not quite sure what you mean. What is the context? --Grumpy444grumpy 19:40, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I cannot for the life of me understand what the word "Frier" has to do with "den vakre". As your dictionary will tell you the word "frier" means something like "suitor" or "wooer", but I think this is a relatively modern word. I was thinking, though, if it is Norse, could it have anything to do with either of the gods Frey, Freya or Frigg? Just a thought. --Grumpy444grumpy 21:35, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have checked out Oluf Rygh's book on placenames in Norway, and it turns out that the Norse adjective fríðr means free, lovely or beautiful. Problem solved? --Grumpy444grumpy 09:37, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Solved! and a fríðr solution at that! Thanks - Williamborg 16:21, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Drive for Swedish quality articles

[edit]

Hello. This is in regards to the upcoming Wikipedia improvements Wikipedia:Pushing to 1.0 and Wikipedia:Stable versions, which have the intentions to provide stable versions of articles suitable for prints or publishing.

I've noticed you have written several articles about Swedish matters. If you feel some of these are decent enough to deserve recognition, you are encouraged to nominate them at Wikipedia:Swedish Wikipedians' notice board/Swedish quality articles. In the end, our articles should be comparable to what is expected from the Encyclopedia Britannica. If it currently isn't, but you feel you have spent a considerable amount of time on it, you are still encouraged to nominate it, so that your work will be recognized and others can continue to improve on it. Don't be shy! :-)

Fred-Chess 11:23, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Most kind of you to suggest. But my focus has been on completeness (i.e., filling in the obvious gaps) rather than driving articles to full publication quality. I'll look over some of them to see if any are good enough for prime time - but am pretty sure I'll nominate few. Thanks - Williamborg 16:24, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I need someone to check out my english spelling in the addition to the article about Valdres Folkemuseum. Hopefully I found the right buildings! — John Erling Blad (no) 20:29, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I found a question on User talk:Wiglafs discussion page about this church, added by you. The correct reading of "and it is often classified as a stave church" is more like "and the palisade walls are often classified as remnants of a stave church". This to is wrong if you use a Norwegian description of a stave church. It is although right if you use a Swedish definition of a stave church.

The background is, in Sweden a stave church is a church with standing planks in the wall while in Norway a stave church is specific construction with standing staves (pillars) on top of a wooden frame. Sometimes scholars in Sweden uses risverkskyrka to avoid the confusion. In all there are three different constructions, probably with a lot of transitional forms. A palisade construction, a construction with earth bound posts and a construction with posts on top of a wooden frame. To make the situation even more unclear a palisade construction can be partly lifted from the ground and set on a wooden frame.

Especially churches with earth bound posts can be easily spotted during an archaeological survey and a palisade construction were all or parts of the walls are set in gravel. Such buildings are detected all over Europe, and according to Leif Anker "Europe are covered in post holes from Italy to Norway". As he says, "it is more interesting to investigate why the stave churches survived in Norway then to try to see them as a Norwegian-only phenomenon".

John Erling Blad (no) 10:57, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent discussion. Might I suggest it be added to the Greensted Church and stave church pages? Williamborg 15:21, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think parts of the stave church article need a reorganization as it tries to describes to many concepts. Right now the Norwegian article both describes a stave church, a post church, palisade techniques, historical foundation, restoration, iconography, etc. At least there should be articles about wooden houses in northern europe with construction techniques for the various types. Then there should be an article about the findings of such buildings all over Europe, probably also with linking to iconography and tales from the various areas. The main problem with this is that parts of english Wikipedia seems to be more focused on the interpretation of the tales, iconography and buildings in a national romantic context then in a scientific context. — John Erling Blad (no) 00:44, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Agree that there is a tendency toward the national romantic - probably the result of having folks like me editing. I have to make a conscious effort to view things differently than as my grandmother described them - and that is sometimes hard. Williamborg 01:40, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think your edits are a problem at all! :D
There are a couple of other articles. One is Palisade church the other is Hemse stave church. The later is an translation I've only initiated to avoid a red link. The interesting thing is that this church which is close to the most extraordinary such finding in Sweden isn't at display for the moment. I'll translate the Norwegian article unless you or someone else wants to do it. — John Erling Blad (no) 02:52, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Am currently working on Vestfronten på Nidarosdomen plus trying to work through the Buskerud municipalities, so I’ll defer to you on Hemse stave church, but I can see the Norwegian article is worth translating. I’ll watch for it. Williamborg 03:00, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, Buskerud.. I'll see if I can take a tour and make some snapshots. Its just a little awkward way home. And I can take photos of some chuches along the road. — John Erling Blad (no) 03:17, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

An article for translation? :D — John Erling Blad (no) 06:12, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I made an article for the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (Norges vassdrags- og energidirektorat) so that Norwegian lakes pages don't need to use a no: interwiki link when talking about the NVE any more. (It's actually less stubby than the Norwegian article, somewhat surprisingly!) Since you created the excellent List of lakes in Norway, I wondered if you knew where on the internet their lakes database is stored? An address would make it possible to accurately reference a lot of Norwegian lake articles.

On a similar topic, do you think it would be worth moving the discussion about different types/names of "lake" in Norway currently on the category page at Category:Lakes of Norway (explaining e.g. why Randsfjorden is called a fjord even though it's not a salt water inlet) into the list of Norwegian lakes? It seems more sensible to have it in article space somewhere, and that would seem to be the best place to put it. TheGrappler 01:28, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Out of the country for a week. Internet access a little sketchy. Will find site once back home. Williamborg 01:53, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Went ahead and made the change you recommended (amazing what you can convince me of when you are so courteous and complimentary) - in this case it was John Erling Blad's excellent work that I just quoted - but it was still thoughtful of you. Williamborg 02:07, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I realised that some of the lake names are actually Sami in origin, so I've added (and referenced, once I got my head around <ref> - took me ages to remember to put <references /> in at the end) something about that too. I also made and inserted a map to show what a lake named "-fjord" tends to look like. So long as its possible to to find a citable address for the lakes database, and some of the red links get filled in (which is on my to-do list) I imagine this can reach featured list status... TheGrappler 21:22, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Be happy to see you push it to the quality that warrants it reaching featured list status. My goals are more pedestrian; I learn about Norway by doing these edits. Cheers - Williamborg 19:35, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

National park

[edit]

Hi! Regarding the redirect. I don't really have a preference for the Sami name to be honest, but the the Paatsjoki one was a bit longer, and contained all the information from Norwegian-named one. I was just being lazy mergeing the two. Since Veiatlas seems to be the guideline, unless there's a English name, I'll make Paatsjoki the redirect. And I'll take a look at the template for you. Thanks for the vigilant eye. --Eivindt@c 00:37, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is it Pasvikelva or Paskikelva. --Eivindt@c 00:41, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
After some research it appears that Paatsjoki is 2 years old, a redirect called Pasvikelva is almost a year old, and your article is one day old, this makes me reluctant to just change around the whole thing. Maybe we should try to find out the Russian name for it, and call it a tie-breaker. Eivindt@c 00:49, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The Chech Wikipedia gives the russian name as Паз (Paz) [1], this ofcourse doesn't help us at all. Eivindt@c 03:17, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey I noticed the revert between you and Y on my watchlist. I see for some reason most of the articles include both wars, but the danish version for example, doesn't seem to mention the war in 1665. Another example is the Dutch. Besides that, most of the articles have very little mention of the 1665 war, and instead only include a bit of background info. Shouldn't these links be removed and left with only the articles on the 1665 war. Falphin 22:26, 1 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

About Medieval 'landsting'

[edit]

Williamborg, you're my idol after all the great work you did on the Scanian history section. Thank you for working so hard! I came to say thanks..but I also have a question: When you have the time, could have a look at the following sentence on the Scanian (linguistics) page:

"The Medieval Scanian Law (Skånske Lov) applied to all four provinces and the 'landsting', the gathering of all four provinces, chose and rendered homage to the king as one unity."

I did a major edit last night (inserting a bucket full of footnotes etc) ;) into that article, but I didn't have time to check up on this issue, so I thought I'd ask an expert. What role did the Medieval Scandinavian landstings play? Is "gathering" the right term here? Any comments on what the above sentence is trying to say and how it could be said better? Best wishes, Pia 20:23, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Williamborg, I found the wiki article about "The Thing" so I added a wikilink and made some small tweaks to that Scania language article. I think it makes sense now, even to us non-history buffs, so no worries. Best, Pia 22:50, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks W! Yes, you definitely deserved some time off after all that work you put in. I'm here on borrowed time now, so I've got to log off for the weekend in a big rush, but I'm glad I saw the note first. In case you didn't see this site yet, I have to recommend it, for the pictures especially (wish we could one or two of them in some articles here): [2]? Rush, rush. List of members of the Norwegian Constitutional Congress

[edit]

The Wikipedia:Translation into English has requested translation of a list into English. The original is no:Liste over medlemmer av Den Grunnlovgivende Forsamling which would translate as "List of members of the Norwegian Constitutional Congress."

I've been asked to do this translation (I have translated several articles from Norwegian to English) and believe it has Wikivalue. However I am not interested in repeating my recent translation history of being requested to translate list of Oppland farms (estates), only to have it challenged as inappropriate to be a Wikilist. Accurate translations take time and energy. Are you the person that I need to contact to confirm this is an acceptable Norwegian list to translate into English?

Thanks - Williamborg 15:22, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not any more privileged than other Wikipedians to decide whether a list should be translated or not. All I can say is that I would not consider nominating that for deletion or supporting it, since we already have a similar list for the USA at Lists of current and former United States Senators, by state. It seems like a fine idea for an article. However, I cannot predict if other Wikipedians will share the same opinion. Stifle (talk) 15:57, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

List of farms

[edit]

I have no real opinion I'm afraid. If those farms really are like towns or neighborhoods or something, I suppose the lists should be Wikified to encourage starting articles on each and every one of them. —Bunchofgrapes (talk) 21:01, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Farms in Oppland

[edit]

[3]: The long list of name is not very informative. A history of farming, how they interacted economically and socially or what kind of information exists about them, that would be different.

The names would look better be put into freely flowing line: name1 - name 2 - name 3 ...

Pavel Vozenilek 21:13, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have never heard of Norwegian farms being like towns or villages, they are just farms, most Norwegian farms are much, much smaller than what you see in mayor agricultoural countries like the US, France and Brazil. That's the sole reason I voted delete. Some of them are notable, like Havrå, but most are not. Keeping a list of Norwegian farms, would set a presendent to keep lists of farms from all around the world, lists that would be unmaintainable. --Eivindt@c 21:39, 14 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

 • I don't have an issue with lists in Wikipedia (List of bridges in Canada List of national parks of the Republic of China) as long as they are effectively a better way than categorising or disambiguating. Opposed to lists for the sake of lists or wikipedia will become an unmaintainable list of lists. I'd far prefer that verifyable articles are created on individual farms and that these can then be grouped into a list document. Just as I'm sure some of these farms are notable enough for an article some are surely not, but without internal wikilinks I can't tell Peripitus 01:48, 15 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Williamborg - I'd love to help with creating the articles for the listed farms as the AfD ended in no-consensus to delete but unfortunately all of the links I can find are in Norwegian. Do you know of any english language net links I could start with ? My local library is less than usefull for anything beyond the broader history of Norway - Peripitus 02:46, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps the lists could be shortened to notable farms, and then we could link to the complete list? That would make it possible to still describe the important caracteristics for places like "Braka" (name comes from Brage) in Sør-Aurdal and avoid all those not so important places. This will also partly minimize the problem assosiated with "gardsnummer/bruksnummer" as sometimes the "gardsnumemr" does not name the important farm. — John Erling Blad (no) 05:36, 17 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

World Heritage Sites template

[edit]

Well, I'm not really sure about how the template looks in Firefox because I use Explorer. So I'm not really able to understand the comment about it. As for the picture, well, I am having trouble placing the template UNDER or AFTER the picture rather than BESIDE it. I tried using "
" but it depends on the setting of the picture, and also may or may not work (depending on the setting of pages). Like I tried formating a certain page in such a way that the template will be below the picture and it took me about 10 minutes of trial and error (using the show preview) just to make sure that the template is below the picture. So I'm hoping that other editors will be able to take care of that... Joey80 02:40, 16 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Some editor pointed out that instead of just using "br", we can actually use "br clear=all". I already applied these to some of the pages of Norwegian WHS and it worked. Maybe we can actually reformat the template itself (i.e. the placement of the flag) because the space underneath it is such a waste if the text is not extended up to there.Joey80 03:14, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for your quick and constructive comments on slash and burn. i agree the term has some association with northern europe and that makes it all the thornier to sort out. ive taken a second pass at an intro to shifting cultivation. let me know what you think. this whole article needs a lot of massaging. as to norway, most of my photos are the southwestern coast and fjords...north of bergen. any particular things of interest to you? seabirds, fjords, old churches? in sweden ill just be in the far south...ancestor issues :} best regards Covalent 04:59, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!
Found a little bit about Sogndal, Rogaland but not much. The web is quite thin. Only one of my history texts mentions it. And I don't have any of the bygdeboker from the area, so did the best I could with what's available. Will keep an eye out for more information.

Upper middle class

[edit]

"...An interesting choice of terms. I suspect that the "Upper Middle class" works every bit as hard as and perhaps harder than 'the working class'." Yes that is very true. As stated the upper middle class consits mostly of professionals whose work is often quite challanging and requires great skill and coperate managers who often work sixty hour weeks. I think one needs to consider that the terminology is quite old. The Weberian system was first formulated in the 1920s and the term working class which now referes to those who are to impoverished to be middle class, yet to wealthy to be lower class, used to be applied to factory workers and other laborors. The term was coined at a time when "working" referred to manual labor, a task conducted by the working class. Nonetheless you're right it is interesting to see how such dated termonology contradicts with some of the realities of the present day. Best Regards, Signaturebrendel 19:00, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Adminship

[edit]

Hi Bill. I was thinking about presenting you to Wikipedia:Request for adminship. You've been here for a relatively long time and think that you deserve to become an admin. Please let me know about your opinion so i can prepare that for you. Cheers -- Szvest 19:39, 8 July 2006 (UTC) Wiki me up™[reply]

Hi Szvest.
I do appreciate your kind thoughts. It is an honor to have you think well enough of my work to take the trouble to ask if I'd consider nomination. The activities that Administrators perform are certainly important to the quality and well-being of Wikipedia. So I sat down to measure my potential as an Administrator and this is what I found:
1. OVERVIEW OF INTERESTS
I am just a student, but "writing crystallizes thought," so I record things which interest me here in the Wikipedia and interact with the others who do so. The beauty and strength of the Wikipedia is that there is so much which is of interest and so many willing to do their bit. Wikipedia is a true intellectual community.
The intellectual community that is Wikipedia is an important home for long tail information. Unlike EB, which is constrained by physical size and number of editors to a limited number of broad articles and must focus on big topics, Wikipedia can cover both the big topics and the niches, helping people find their way to that relatively obscure material that they are actually interested in. Wikipedia is, in spite of those who suggest otherwise, a relational database which can link diverse topics in ways that EB and kin can not. There an awful lot of dross in minor articles, but there are diamonds too, and among those diamonds, the future waits. Wikipedia overthrows the tyranny of lowest-common-denominator fare. I belive we must overthrow the tyranny of lowest-common-denominator fare; that is, we must Keep Wikipedia Weird.
Such views have logical consequences; I am a devout inclusionist. I strongly believe in the value of fixing and extending articles rather than pruning them. I strongly believe in the value of the less-popular topics. The obscure should be encouraged, nurutred and linked.
I also hold with Halldór Laxness's magnificent novel, Kristnihald undir Jökli or Christianity under the Glacier (published in English as Under the Glacier), where he states that, "The difference between a novelist and a historian is this: that the former tells lies deliberately and for the fun of it; the historian tells lies in his simplicity and imagines he is telling the truth." We Wikipedians must ever be open to the possibility that what one has previously read and what one "knows to be true" is simply wrong. We must be open and intellectually honest. We must attempt to use the Wikipedia, not as a pulpit for our world-view, but as a method to develop a more rational and less jingoistic world view.
2. SYSOP CHORES What sysop chores, if any, would you anticipate helping with?
 • RC Patrolling: I have little interest in the Recent Changes Patrol. I do wander through occasionally to see what's going on, but RC patrolling just isn't of interest...
 • Diablo test: I pass the Diablo test of having worked on a featured article. And now that I see that it is a prerequisite for Adminship, I understand why people crowd on the edit a nominee for featured article. But I believe that an administrator's merit is not measured by participation in editng a featured article. In fact I wonder if the Diablo test is a valid test.
 • AIV: Someone has to revert vandalism and warn the offenders appropriately. I revert vandalism when I come across vandalism, but I don't patrol for vandalism. Don’t intend to patrol for vandalism either.
 • AFD closing/re-listing: I hold strong inclusionist views and have little interest in deletion patrols (unless the article is truly bogus). Most articles can be saved by expanding and adding context.
 • Mergers: I dislike mergers. I strongly dislike mergers. Good short articles are frequently concatenated into long, turgid, ponderous, confusing, unreadable things of limited value. Articles should be expanded, not merged (you saw my reaction on the Atlas mountains merger recommendation).
 • CSD: Candidates for speedy deletion should be deleted if they meet the criteria. But I have no desire to delete them. I'm an inclusionist.
 • Helping newcomers: When a newby does work worth recognition, I'm happy to acknowledge it, but only if I come across their edits in the course of routine work. Not particularly interested in seeking them out.
 • Other sysop chores: Requests for Page Protection, 3RR Noticeboard, the Administrator Noticeboard and Incidents are all useful and I'm glad someone does these. But I’m most interested in adding new material.
2. CONTRIBUTIONS Of your articles or contributions to Wikipedia, are there any about which you are particularly pleased, and why?
3.CONFLICT RESOLUTION Have you been in any conflicts over editing in the past or do you feel other users have caused you stress? How have you dealt with it and how will you deal with it in the future?
 • I’ve had one conflict and am not too proud of it. Handled it by sulking in a terribly immature fashion and going off to do other things for a while (at the time I felt most of us have a life outside of Wikipedia and shouldn't have to put up with what feels like manipulative abuse). After a couple of months away I returned, made peace, and have tried to be more mature in my own behavior. Basically that boils down to working in good faith and assuming that other Wikipedians are acting in good faith, even though your gut leads you to suspect otherwise. Turns out to work pretty well; Wikipedians are fundamentally good people; most folks on Wikipedia are trying to do good and useful things.
SUMMARY So you see, I’m probably not an ideal candidate for an Administrator on Wikipedia. My interests are not in line with the classical Admin interests. And I work for a living (including periodic out-of-country travel) so am available only intermittently. But if you think the above would survive a nomination vote and still want to ask me to serve, I’ll do my best to be fair and work for a quality Wikipedia.
Regardless, thanks for the kind thought - Williamborg 03:13, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Bill! I read your analysis w/ concentration and don't find a big reason not to. Pia is also supporting fully my suggestion. Maybe after finishing the hoard of unwashed urchins you can get back to the board for another task over here. I mean a one minute lasting task. -- Szvest 17:24, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification requested to Olaf Bull

[edit]

You translated Olaf Bull. Could I get your clarification on the meaning of this sentence? "Consciousness that nothing can last deeply underlies his poetry and impresses itself on much of his other work." Does he hold the belief or idea that nothing can last? I would much enjoy it if you could clear up the meaning of this sentence. Reply to my talk page or Talk:Olaf Bull, which I will be watchlisting for the foreseeable future. Response on Talk:Olaf Bull. Hope this does what you need. Cheers - Williamborg 07:06, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Though I apologise, it wasn't neccessarily non-neutral point of view, but I couldn't put my finger on what I ment until now. It was more that the tone of voice was pure praise, rather than describing the subject. However, I think such tone is gone now. Thanks for translating articles like that one. Kevin_b_er 08:38, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Can see what you meant about the tone of the review. I personally suspected it was the original article's author's attempt to convey why that, although depressing, the poet's work was good enough that he won broad recognition. That's one of the problems with translations; unless you know the topic yourself or have other sources it is hard to do more than convey what the original author said as best you can. Glad you're more comfortable with it now. Williamborg 12:50, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Jolly Roger

[edit]

Dear sir
Re. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Jolly Roger Restaurant, I am seeking consensus. Toward meeting your interests, the topic already exists in improved and complete form, per Wikipedia standards, in context, at Lake City, Seattle, Washington#Storied past. The piece was chopped out by a newbie. The damage was soon repaired, and I've been trying to clean up this uprooted duplicate leftover. For Wikipedia quality, I would prefer disposing of this odd snippet, rather than leaving a scrap lying about. I am the original researcher and author of the topic in the article, post [4]. The Jolly Roger story is an integral part of the character of Lake City, but it is otherwise not particularly encyclopedic.

So toward consenus, would you change your vote? Thank you for your consideration. --GoDot 11:10, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well in the lack of an IRC... I had a few questions.

 1. Please tell me how you ran into WikiVoter, as I have not advertised it anywhere.
 2. Do you do AfD's often? (these are the people I want to test it...)
 3. What is your OS (operating system)?
 4. What version of IE do you have?
 5. You do have cookies enabled right?
 6. Have you ever used AWB? (I have a reason for asking this :)

That should start :) —— Eagle (ask me for help) 23:27, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Answers below:
 • Please tell me how you ran into WikiVoter, as I have not advertised it anywhere.
Response: I just recently took up AfD's. After doing if for a while I realized I went through the same steps time after time and thought there must be a better way. Went hunting around to find one. Found your page.
 • Do you do AfD's often? (these are the people I want to test it...)
Response: Didn't until I was asked to stand for Administrator and failed almost as miserably as anyone ever did. Decided I ought to figure out Wiki-policy. The only way to really understand things is to get involved in it. So recently I've lived in AfD and similar such.
 • What is your OS (operating system)?
Response: Microsoft XP Version 5.1 with Service Pack 2
 • What version of IE do you have?
Response: Version 6.0.2900.2180
 • You do have cookies enabled right?
Response: Can enable or disable as appropriate for the application. Currently enabled.
 • Have you ever used AWB? (I have a reason for asking this :)
Response: Nope. Thought about AWB once, but most of what I’ve done while editing is more content oriented (I do a fair amount of translation).
You didn't ask about computer proficiency directly. Hardly great. I'm a physicist by education, but my son's degrees are in computer science and when I get stumped (more often than I like to admit) I call him.
Cheers - Williamborg (Bill) 23:47, 29 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, then before you can use....

[edit]
 1. Regarding the last question, about AWB... you are going to need to follow the installation proceedure for AWB (don't have to download it, but the .NET framework is critical) Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser#Using this software, look in the second section (called download).
 2. No, the questions were not to computer know-how, but to whether or not your computer will work.
 3. Regarding you as an experianced AfD person. I have a few questions.
 1. when a AfD is opened, does the nominator's opinion count to the final tally (yes I know it is a disscussion, but part of WikiVoter is a statistics module.) Any advice here is welcome!
 2. is Query a valid response, (seen several), should the statistics module look for this and like statements?
 3. bullet points are the proper way to put your opinion right?

I have more, but that should do, (if at all possible, let me know if you are able to get onto IRC from home... have a few more questions like the above (about AfD in general)

Also one heads up, the program will randomly check to make sure that you are logged in under the same username (if not it will recount your edits as if you were opening up the program). This is to make violating WP:SOCK harder. —— Eagle (ask me for help) 00:09, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Also you said you were a physicist, as in physics? This is my intended major... (along with mathematics...). So I have to ask... what do you do as a physicist, what do you study? Is really interested —— Eagle (ask me for help) 00:09, 30 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, any on Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Danny Yee (second nomination)? The same User:Kmaguir1 seems to have gone though my list of "articles created" on my user page, and just added prod/afd to many of them, but edited little other than that (including a couple categories, the I went ahead and de-prod'd). Obviously, you might feel differently about Yee's notability than Martelli's, but I think they are of similar notability overall. Of course, a non-notable topic shouldn't survive AfD just because of a bad-faith nomination; but I don't think that is the case here. LotLE×talk 20:56, 27 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Within minutes ANI was buzzing, I offered anyone who feels I mustn't continue as an admin to ask for my recall, and 6 did. - CrazyRussian talk/email 12:14, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Presume you've fasted, torn your outer garments, worn sackcloth; slept on the ground and otherwise repented for your errors (or at least learned to hold your tongue. I'll watch for your reconfirmation. Skål - Williamborg (Bill) 12:48, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hehh :) I rent my garments, donned sackloth, acknowledged my misdeeds and made commitments for the future etc. etc. It wasn't the comment which did me in (people agreed it didn't violate NPA, besides, it was a one-off event) - it was the self-unblocking. - CrazyRussian talk/email 02:10, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Some trivia for you

[edit]

Williamborg: did you know that you have one of the top 100 most viewed user pages on Wikipedia so far for the month of September? Man, you are hot and happening. He, he. I only contributed one little peek to these September statistics, but now I know I've got to keep more than one eye on you. ;) Best, Pia 20:03, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, skål to you W..and to the speedy end to that particular arbitration. The thing is, I think the person who filed that arbitration request had contributed some pretty neat stuff to other articles, before getting carried away by a passionate and all-consuming antipathy in that particular biography, so having to put the person in a such bad light in an official discussion was uncomfortable. Finding my way back to your popular page was great though. No, you don't need controversy to make people peek twice there, no worries. Pia 06:13, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Citing unit sources

[edit]

Hi Bill, I like your changes to the WP:MOSNUM. I commented over at WP:MOSNUM's talk page, but can you provide an example of how a cited unit would look? —MJCdetroit 13:53, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unsigned comment

You mentioned my contribution on utility and targets was targetted for deletion. Given that it's based on published material, I'd appreciate knowing why there were concerns about the contribution.

Response— Apologize for not being more clear with my comment. I did not list your article for deletion, but someone did because they had concerns about it. You can see more about the deletion decision at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Targets and Utility. My thoughts about it follow:
 • Several things indicate you’re new to contributing to Wikipedia. It’s perfectly okay to be new to Wikipedia; we’re all new here once. And Wikipedia tries to help new contributors since they are often capable of contributing material that others can not.
 • As you can see from the comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Targets and Utility, the individual who nominated your article for deletion thought it was original research. Original research is not allowed by Wikipolicy (see Wikipedia:No original research).
 • I wrote you the note back on August 21st because I thought you might be able to answer the questions which would keep it from being deleted (& I didn’t know enough about the topic to help rewrite it to save it).
 • One of the things that would help a great deal, especially since you indicate that it is based on referenced material, would be to add one or more references to the article (see Wikipedia:Citing sources for an explanation of how to do so). Once referenced other editors can verify your work.
 • Please feel free to talk further with me if I can help explain any of this to you. This link will put you at the right spot on my discussion page. Just click here and you can add a comment to my user discussion page. When you finish, add ~~~~ and it will add your signature.
 • Hope to see more of you on Wikipedia - Williamborg (Bill) 02:54, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

And as an added comment, I'm very pleased to see you've contributed more. Williamborg (Bill) 02:57, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mr. Lefty's RfA thanks

[edit]
Hi, Williamborg, and thanks for supporting me in my recent request for adminship, which succeeded with a final tally of 70/4/4. I hope I can live up to your expectations, and if there's ever anything you need, you know where to find me! --Mr. Lefty Talk to me! 00:21, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It has been a month after you replied to my request for feedback on Erast Fandorin. The article was again significantly expanded, and I think all the issues have been addressed. I would appreciate it if you could take another look at it, and possibly suggest some more enhancements. Thanks in advance! Errabee 13:04, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your comments. The section Allusions I just started today, and I will certainly work on it. I hope you like The Turkish Gambit! Errabee 19:50, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism from IP 204.52.215.128

[edit]

Hey thanks for letting me know that someone had used my computer for vandalism. Sioux page was vandalize by my roommate when I did not lock my computer. I initially thought this was a shared IP at Rutgers-Newark. However, I discovered that the vandalism was done at my computer by my roommate because of the link you provided. Cheers :)

EDIT: I have just confirmed that this is actually shared IP as well at Rutgers-Newark. There is work done by other users not including myself and my roommate. Valoem talk 19:16, 27 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading Image:```Buarbreen i Odda.JPG. However, the image may soon be deleted unless we can determine the copyright holder and copyright status. The Wikimedia Foundation is very careful about the images included in Wikipedia because of copyright law (see Wikipedia's Copyright policy).

The copyright holder is usually the creator, the creator's employer, or the last person who was transferred ownership rights. Copyright information on images is signified using copyright templates. The three basic license types on Wikipedia are open content, public domain, and fair use. Find the appropriate template in Wikipedia:Image copyright tags and place it on the image page like this: {{TemplateName}}. If you have not already done so please also include the source of the image; in most cases the website where you found it.

Please signify the copyright information and source on any other images you have uploaded or will upload. Remember that images without this important information can be deleted by an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me, or ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Nv8200p talk 15:10, 9 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In former days I transferred a number of "rights reserved" from teh Norwegian Wikipedia while translating their pages; they were then permitted by Wikipolicy. Things have become more disciplined. Since the original of Image:``Buarbreen i Odda.JPG had rights reserved, it was removed from the Norwegian Wikipedia. And so it must be removed on the English Wikipedia. My RfA

Just wanted to send a quick note of thanks for your support in my RfA. :-) I really appreciate it! Best, Irongargoyle 17:25, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My RfA

[edit]
Thank you for participating in my RfA, which passed with a tally of 91/1/4. I can't express how much it means to me to become an administrator. I'll work even more and harder to become useful for the community. If you need a helping hand, don't hesitate to contact me. NCurse work 15:51, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your monobook.js

[edit]

In this edit, you have added code that render the page appear in the WP:CSD, I think you may want to fix the code. --WinHunter (talk) 11:53, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From my little knowledge of coding I think it is this line (the {{deleted}} part especially):
if(edsum.indexOf('{{delete}}')!=-1) return 'sp'; //override group de below
causing the page to appear in speedy. --WinHunter (talk) 14:19, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RfA thanks from StuffOfInterest

[edit]
Thank you for participating in my RfA, which finished with a tally of 52/6/1 (~90%). It was an interesting process which gave me a chance to learn a bit about myself and about the community. My intention now is to slowly ease into using those additional buttons on my page. No use being over eager and mucking up the works. The support of all those who went over my record and/or rallied to my defense after the big oppose vote was instumental to the success of this review. Again, thank you! --StuffOfInterest 11:33, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
