WeirdNAnnoyed (talk) 23:04, 18 December 2024 (UTC)Managing a conflict of interest
[edit]Hello, Wikiyem. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. We ask that you:
- avoid editing or creating articles about yourself, your family, friends, colleagues, company, organization, clients, or competitors;
- propose changes on the talk pages of affected articles (you can use the {{edit COI}} template), including links or details of reliable sources that support your suggestions;
- disclose your conflict of interest when discussing affected articles (see Wikipedia:Conflict of interest § How to disclose a COI);
- avoid linking to your organization's website in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam § External link spamming);
- do your best to comply with Wikipedia's content policies.
In addition, you are required by the Wikimedia Foundation's terms of use to disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution which forms all or part of work for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation. See Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure.
Also, editing for the purpose of advertising, publicizing, or promoting anyone or anything is not permitted. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 02:24, 20 December 2024 (UTC)

[edit]Hello Wikiyem. The nature of your edits gives the impression you have an undisclosed financial stake in promoting a topic, but you have not complied with Wikipedia's mandatory paid editing disclosure requirements. Paid advocacy is a category of conflict of interest (COI) editing that involves being employed (or being compensated in any way) by a person, group, company or organization to promote their interests. Paid advocacy on Wikipedia must be disclosed even if you have not specifically been asked to edit Wikipedia. Undisclosed paid advocacy is prohibited by our policies on neutral point of view and what Wikipedia is not, and is an especially serious type of COI; the Wikimedia Foundation regards it as a "black hat" practice akin to black-hat search-engine optimization.
Paid advocates are strongly discouraged from direct article editing, and should instead propose changes on the talk page of the article in question if an article exists. If the article does not exist, paid advocates are strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly.
Regardless, if you are receiving or expect to receive compensation for your edits, broadly construed, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Wikiyem. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Wikiyem|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}
. If I am mistaken – you are not being directly or indirectly compensated for your edits – please state that in response to this message. Otherwise, please provide the required disclosure. In either case, do not edit further until you answer this message. 331dot (talk) 15:05, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hello, thank you for your message. I can confirm that I am not receiving, nor do I expect to receive, any compensation, direct or indirect, for my edits. My contributions are solely motivated by my interest in improving the coverage of underrepresented topics and individuals on Wikipedia, with a particular focus on Yemeni war and art and the context of women’s contributions in these areas. As a new Wikipedia editor, I have been focusing on a couple of articles to hone my editing skills and deepen my understanding of Wikipedia's guidelines and processes. Wikiyem (talk) 15:35, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- Do you have access to these artists? You claim to have taken and own the copyright to this very professional looking image of Mrs. Altowai. 331dot (talk) 15:47, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- I do see where you wrote "Photo taken by Omar Alobidy at Record Media, Sana'a, Yemen" on the image page, but the rest of the page says it's your work that you own the copyright to- if that's not the case, you must edit the image page to remedy this as soon as possible(meaning you would need to show that the photographer released the image under a license compatible with Wikipedia). 331dot (talk) 15:50, 30 December 2024 (UTC)
- I contacted the artist to request her permission to use photos for the article and informed her that I was creating a Wikipedia article based on publicly available sources. Again, I have no personal or financial relationship with her and acted independently. Regarding the licensing issue, thank you for pointing it out. I have updated the image page to properly credit the photographer and reflect the correct ownership. The photographer has been notified and has agreed to send the required permissions if this has not already been done. I appreciate your guidance on this matter. Wikiyem (talk) 02:04, 31 December 2024 (UTC)
- As long as you're just requesting photos, there's no other issue. But anything much more(such as editing on her instructions) would trigger the conflict of interest rules. 331dot (talk) 02:43, 31 December 2024 (UTC)
- Noted, Thanks. The article is completely independent and based solely on publicly available sources, with no instructions or input from the subject. 92.234.98.191 (talk) 14:09, 31 December 2024 (UTC)
- That was me. Apologies for any confusion! Wikiyem (talk) 14:23, 31 December 2024 (UTC)
- Hello,
- If there is anything further I can do to address the "Undisclosed Paid" note on my first article, please let me know.
- Thank you for your time Wikiyem (talk) 21:45, 3 January 2025 (UTC)
- Hello again 331dot, hope you’re doing well.
- While I understand the "Undisclosed Paid Editing" note is still under evaluation, I wanted to ask if I’m currently restricted from making further edits to the content of the article. I’d like to contribute more to improving its tone, as I now have a clearer understanding of some issues.
- I’m happy to leave the note in place until it’s resolved by the administrators, as I understand and appreciate the good faith behind flagging it. I’m also more than willing to clarify or provide additional details around the nature of my edits that flagged this issue, if needed.
- As a newcomer, I apologise for any misunderstandings or disturbances I may have caused due to my lack of experience
- Thank you for your time and guidance, Wikiyem (talk) 10:20, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
- I removed the tag. 331dot (talk) 10:29, 9 January 2025 (UTC)
