If you have not created this media yourself then there needs to be an argument why we have the right to use the media on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then it needs to be specified where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. new Portal:Korea

User:Visviva has worked hard to create a brand new Portal:Korea. Please take a look & contribute if you can. I think the new Template:Korea topics has the potential to be a more useful reference tool than categories or lists, if editors continue to expand and update it. Gama image

First of all, thank you very much for taking interest in keeping Wikipedia under order. I've actually sent an e-mail to Yahoo! Korea on this issue.

He sent me a reply, and, although I myself am a Korean, I've been living in the states now for 6 years, and couldn't understand fully what he said.

This is what I think that he is saying. If you or anybody else could confirm this...

Also, s/he told me to go to 야후! 안내 > 야후! 링크특급 to read for further information. I can't find that link.

Finally, the representative sent me bunch of info's about not allowing me to reproduce the Yahoo! Korea page under another server. I am really confused, although what I typed at the image site is the best I could get. (Wikimachine 00:33, 12 April 2006 (UTC))

hi, i couldn't find anything like Chwe Yoon Eyee. that doesn't look like proper romanization, & there's nothing for chae yun eui or 채윤의 either. maybe this was a reference to Chae Yun, the chinese inventor of paper? thanks. Appleby 04:17, 21 April 2006 (UTC)

No. It is Chwe Yoon Eyee or Eui or some other way to pronounce it.

thanks, that clears things up. revised romanization would be Choe Yun-eui. but it seems that he is the compiler/editor of the contents of a book that was printed, not the person doing the printing or an inventor of printing technique, right? Appleby 05:28, 22 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi, first of all I lived in Korea for 3 years, edit on various Korean articles and keep an eye on the Korean noticeboard. Some of my created articles included Hyundai Unicorns, Manseok Park, Cass (beer) and Oriental Brewery. If you have any Korean-related projects you want a hand with, please let me know.

I'd like you to take a look at my contributions and perhaps reconsider the claims you made in your vote on my RfA. I think that it's wrong to suggest more admins would lead to "severe internal conflicts" - admins are chosen from experienced editors to ensure harmony, and the English Wikipedia needs more admins, as it has a very low ratio of admins:editors. 5 months and 3300+ edits is a perfectly long time to get to know an editor (recent RfAs have seen editors with less than 3 months experience get promoted) and if you talk to current admins I am sure they will be able to assure you that your concerns are unnecessary. I notice you have never edited in project space before today (pages beginning with "Wikipedia:..."), and with some more experience in this department I'm sure you'll get a better feel for the way things work. Rest assured, helping keep Korean topics vandalism-free and well maintained will be one of my priorities if I become an administrator.

I believe you are concerned that being an admin is a "priveliged position". Admins are chosen on a wide range of criteria, of which "time-served" is just one. Indeed, admins are chosen to serve, and as such many believe that "adminship is no big deal", and I'm sure you'll find almost all Wikipedians are against admins being regarded as priveliged or superior to ordinary users. If you check out Wikipedia:List of non-admins with high edit counts, you'll notice how many long-serving editors simply don't want to be admins, often because they don't have the time, don't edit on a wide range of topics or don't want to get too involved in the situations admins are called upon to deal with.

All I ask is that you truly consider your vote again. If you feel moved to support, I would be honoured. Being neutral would be absolutely fine. However, if at least you have no reason to oppose I would be delighted if you reconsidered your opposition.

Just a friendly reminder to use an edit summary when proposing deletion for an article. Edit summary usage is always good, but it is especially important that edit summaries are used when proposing deletion. The reason for this is that articles proposed for deletion that later have the {{prod}} tag removed should not be proposed for deletion again, but rather sent to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. The only easy way to check if an article was previously proposed for deletion is to look at the edit history and the edit summaries people have left before. Thanks! Hi Wikimachine. In your article Jang Yeong-sil, you comment that the iron printing press was invented in Korea in 1234, before Gutenberg's version even. Is this fact contained in the work referenced at the bottom? If it is, can you provide a page number for me, and check if the author cites anyone for his assertion? Thanks. A response to Wikimachine from Good friend. About the Jurchens...Admiral Yi did fight the Jurchens. He wasn't a top general but was a captain and helped protect the northern borders of Korea from 1583-1588. I deleted the section because I felt that there wasn't enough information about the Jurchens. I rewrote the section with a little more detail.

I would also like to add that I read from an internet site that Yi Il, one of the Korean generals during the Seven Year War who lost the important Battle of Chungju and Battle of Sangju, was the general who conspired against Admiral Yi and had him demoted.

Closed Deletion Debates

Speedy keep. This is ridiculous. Delete redirect Dokdo? No Koreans would ever know of this place as Liancourt Rock. And I would take on my life than to myself to use Takeshima instead of Dokdo. Just because there was a move from Liancourt Rock to Dokdo according to consensus of the general community does not mean that this redirect should be considered at all. It seems very much that the pro-Japanese Wikipedians have made an offensive move through this. By all means, I am deleting this request for deletion of the redirect very soon. I have removed the above text from WP:RFD. Please do not add comments to closed deletion debates (RFD, AFD, etc.). If you want to start a new debate, there are procedures for doing this. However, once a debate is closed, it is an archive and no changes should occur. It's also clear from your comment that you did not actually read the entire debate. The redirect nomination was listed backwards - Dokdo was not the redirect, Liancourt Rock was the redirect. Nothing is currently being debated for deletion and any discussion regarding the correct name of the article belong at the article's talk page. -- JLaTondre 11:25, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Okay. I looked at the original picture. Can you make the blank space on the top and right side the same as the blank space on the left? Cutting off too much doesn't look good either. But keep the image of the soldier the same size within the article as before. Thanks.

Jang Yeong-sil

i posted at a couple places for help with this article. i know you've put in a lot of work into it, but i think it still needs a bit of clean-up before we can put it up for Portal:Korea. specifically, the references don't seem to be formatted correctly, but i'm not familiar enough with the markup language to fix it myself. please see how inline citations work, e.g. [2] (the <ref> xxx </ref> format is now preferred, i think.) the full instructions are at [3] but my eyes just glaze over reading that page. sea of japan

thanks for keeping an eye on it. some recent edits have bloated the article with tangential & specious details, as well as stuffing the intro with details that belong in later subsections. & since jjok doesn't want to delete anything, i just added more stuff from korea's position. i guess if you read the article now, it looks more or less balanced with lots of hot air from both sides, but i just preferred the earlier version that was already too long. anyway, the more people monitoring an article like that, the better, i guess. thanks. compare, for example, this diff [4]. actually, i don't think it's a good idea right now to make major changes to the article. after the tug of war between me & jjok, it probably needs a bit of cooling off period before someone really just logically streamlines all the wordiness. imho, our energies would be better spent on other articles, unless jjok or others make more major changes to the article. thanks. Hi Wikimachine, good to see you're into the project. To be honest I think you might benefit more from mediation, and if you think this is the kind of situation that isn't going to go away through dialogue but requires a kind of enforcer to deal with things then that is a little beyond what I feel able to do as an admin. In any case I don't have a lot of time right now so I'm mainly just dropping in to check my talk page now and again.

Rain gauge & image

Hi Wikimachine--thanks for looking into it. This is definitely an image worth saving, if possible. I responded back on the PUI page--basically since most of us can't really read Korean, it would be extremely helpful if you could point out the part of the page that says it's under GFDL (I couldn't find that term or GNU, though it could be me not seeing it right in front of me--if so, I'm sorry). Hi Wikimachine,

I notice that you are uploading a lot of images from other websites. You are tagging them as "GFDL," but in most cases I don't see where the original author has released them under the GFDL. For instance, you added Image:Han River.jpg to Han River (Korea) and released it under the GFDL. You stated that the source was [5]. However, I don't see anyting on Dcsinside.com that indicates the content there is freely licensed. The same goes for Image:Dongdaegu.jpg.

Please remember that images cannot be released under the GFDL without the creator's consent. The absence of a copyright notice is not enough. If the creator has given consent, either on their website or by other means, please provide that information on the image description page. Otherwise I'm afraid these images will have to be removed. -- Visviva 05:09, 14 August 2006 (UTC)

Visvia, thanks for the notice. When you mean by consent, does it have to be 'direct', or can it be indicated by the purpose of the site itself?

The sources are direct links to the images, not the sites that hold them. The images that I uploaded today are from www.cityglance.org and www.skyscrapercity.com. The ones that I took were taken by amateur photographers and posted there. (Wikimachine 05:13, 14 August 2006 (UTC))

OK, thanks for the info. I believe that it does need to be direct consent, but there may be some times when that is not the case. Generally the Wikipedia policy at present is to err on the side of caution and not accept images that are not clearly free (or at least defensible under fair use). I don't think we can consider found images to be GFDL by default. After all, there is a possibility that site X (with no copyright claims) is actually lifting material without attributions from site Y (which may have copyright claims). These things can get awfully messy.
